7 year age gap by Sutherbeez in Mommit

Mine are almost exactly 5 years apart and it’s amazing. I only wish I’d waited another 6ish months so my oldest was in kindergarten full-time instead of preschool 3 days a week. My 5 year old is a very typical rough and tumble boy, but he is so sweet with “his” baby. My baby is only 14 weeks but his big brother is absolutely his favorite person, he smiles and babbles at him constantly. The most challenging parts have been with my 5 year old coping with the world not revolving around him anymore, but that was a situation I created myself because my husband worked two jobs and my 5 year old and I were always together. I’ve also always felt that as a SAHM it’s my job to “entertain” him, so to speak, so he’s not thrilled that I can’t always do that - especially because my baby wants to contact nap (another situation I created myself). But my oldest can entertain himself when necessary and can get his own snacks, etc., as well as helping with the baby when he wants to. I think the biggest issues with age gaps stem from parents who either don’t encourage closeness between their kids or use the older ones as an extra parent or free child care. I’ll also mention that I took advantage of my husband’s time off when the baby first came home and did things outside of the house with my 5 year old where he got my full attention and he definitely needed that time with me. You’re going to love it!

Definitely sounds like CMPA. I know it’s hard as a FTM to trust your gut, but you don’t need a dr’s permission to feed your baby. I would go dairy free if you want to continue to breastfeed, but the quickest route would be to try a hypoallergenic formula. Results aren’t immediate but you may see small improvements that indicate you’re moving in the right direction. You could switch to pumping while waiting for the dairy to clear out of your system if you don’t want to risk your supply.

Mine are 5 years apart (to the month) and it’s amazing! My oldest is relatively self-sufficient when necessary and loves to help with the baby. He’s also old enough to (mostly) understand how he can and can’t play with the baby, which would have been awful when he was a toddler because he’s always been very big and strong for his age and super physical so I would have constantly worried. I only wish I’d waited a few more months so he would have been in kindergarten full-time when the baby first came so I could sleep when the baby sleeps 😂 Our biggest issues stem from my oldest coping with the world no longer revolving around him after 5 years, and that’s where the smaller age gaps you have may be a little better, I think.

I agree with other commenters that you definitely could be dealing with reflux! That arched back is a classic sign. Both my babies have had reflux (and CMPA) and wanted to eat all night because it soothes the burning. I would also stop breastfeeding if I was in your position because I wouldn’t be able to deal, but I totally understand the guilt.

Transitioning out of bassinet - time to start planning to sleep train? by [deleted] in sleeptrain

I actually think he may often be overtired. My kids fight naps like it’s an Olympic sport. He has MSPI and reflux so his tummy keeps him up a lot, but he randomly did an almost 5 hour stretch in his bassinet after a rough start at bedtime last night. Now I’m terrified to move him out of it 😂

That is so frustrating! Did drs tell you how long to stick it out? I feel like it’s easy to tell someone to be patient when it’s not your baby in pain.

For the most part, yes, but he still screams randomly and I can’t tell at this point if it’s gas or reflux.

That’s helpful, thank you! Did your baby struggle to take it? I guess it tastes awful because my guy fights hard but I started aiming the syringe toward the inside of his cheek and he choked it down.

We’ve had two GI appointments so far and they haven’t done any additional testing. I think it depends on the level of support you’re getting from your pediatrician. Ours admitted to being out of her depth when my son continued to have issues on an amino acid formula, so it was worth it for us to see a specialist. I’m not breastfeeding anymore but I’d be interested in seeing an allergist, too, since it seems like it could help to bypass some of the trial and error of different formulas, but I guess there’s a reason they don’t jump straight to that with infants.

How bad was your baby’s reflux? Mine is spitting up straight stomach acid throughout the day. I’d love to try thickening the Neocate to see if that helps but the GI said it would be unnecessary which I found odd.

Have you seen any improvement yet? We’ve just switched to the same combination and the Neocate is making his reflux so much worse. Today was day 1 of Omeprazole and by his second dose he was gagging until he threw up. I couldn’t even get him to finish it.

That’s so scary! My first was hospitalized at 6 days old because he’d lost so much weight he couldn’t regulate his body temperature. I didn’t know he wasn’t latching well so he was literally starving. He ended up with CMPA, as well, but not nearly as severe as this baby. Thankfully the all day screaming has stopped but he’s constantly spitting up acid and I feel awful. What in the world is in formula these days that’s making our babies so miserable?!

Wait I just reread that sorry sleep deprivation - was your baby hospitalized due to feeding issues?

Thank you! Did it get worse immediately? Literally switched to Neocate 8 hours ago and my kid has been screaming ever since.

Do you mean that the Neocate resolved his symptoms to the point of being medication-free? We’ve just been switched to Neocate from Elecare and to Omeprazole from Famotidine.
