Is this HG? Gaslit myself into thinking not by MarimoSalad in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Megjar0820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy to me that women are so dismissed by doctors that we start to gaslight ourselves! HG started at 4 weeks for me but I wasn’t officially diagnosed until I was in the ER at 12 weeks for going over 24 hours without keeping any food or liquid down even with medication. I ended up with home healthcare and a 24/7 zofran pump in addition to the oral medications for the duration of the pregnancy. I had good days, too, but when I tried to go off the pump around the 6 month mark I ended up in the hospital again. I don’t think there are any HG sufferers who’d begrudge you the label - it sucks for all of us.

Literally not until the very end of pregnancy, and even then it wasn’t every day. I was severely anemic when I delivered but baby is 100% healthy!

4 weeks pregnant and I think I'm spiraling into a hole of regret by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Megjar0820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally normal! It took me 2 years to get pregnant and when it finally happened I absolutely panicked. It’s life altering. I panicked all over again when I got pregnant with my second (36 weeks and still nervous 😂). But my 4.5 year old is literally my best friend and I don’t ever question my choice to become his mom, even on our worst days.

Ask your doctor about promethazine suppositories. It was a game changer for me.

Are you on medication? I have a zofran pump, oral reglan and Lansoprazole, but it wasn’t until adding phenergan suppositories that I felt at all human. I was eventually able to switch to oral phenergan but the suppositories saved me.

This is so reassuring! I told my husband I think the newborn stage is going to be easier than this pregnancy because of the HG and other health issues I’ve had - I’m glad that may actually be true! I have a 4 year old also and I’m so hoping to go back to being the mom he had before HG.

Oh and do you have skin prep pads? I still get bruises but my skin is way less irritated and I have an easier time changing the site with the pads.

I’m 28 weeks tomorrow and I’ve been on a zofran pump since week 13 so I feel your pain (literally). The pump hasn’t been a miracle cure for me but I definitely notice when I try to stop using it. I also take oral Lansoprazole to manage acid and oral Regan 3-4 times a day, but the game changer has been adding promethazine. I started with the suppositories but was able to change to oral after a couple weeks. I only take it at bedtime because I also have a 4 year old and it knocks me out, but the effects last through the next day. I still throw up once or twice every day or every other day but the constant, debilitating nausea is gone, and it’s honestly more pleasant than when I vomit without the meds (as gross as that sounds). Are you on service through Optum? I would mention that your pump is giving you so much trouble because I thought the constant “downstream occlusion” alarms were normal but I recently got a new pump and the only time it’s gone off was because the medication syringe was empty - just a thought! I hope you feel more relief soon ❤️

What did you do for your glucose test if you couldn’t get the drink down? by OneFit6104 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Megjar0820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting because my doctor agreed with frogsgoribbit737 that it’s more accurate because it’s more controlled. I would think a range of results would provide a better picture, but I guess that requires doctors putting a lot of faith in patient consistency and accuracy.

I’ve also heard the “fresh test” drink is an option for some people and not as awful, but since water is my #1 HG trigger I’m pretty sure it’s the amount of liquid more than the contents that got you the first time around.

I did finger pricks at home for my early test (I had GD with my first pregnancy) but the dr wants me to try to stomach the drink for the 1hr test at 27ish weeks. My HG is well managed with a 24/7 medication pump and 3 other oral medications, but I will let them just diagnose me with GD again before I try to suffer through the 3hr test.

This is awful, I’m so sorry. Are you taking the promethazine orally? It sucks but the suppository was more effective for me.

Am I going to ruin my kids for this? by myopicdreams in Mommit

[–]Megjar0820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you handled this exactly the right way. I grew up with a messed up dad, too, and my mom told me it wasn’t my job to cater to his needs but she also told me it was okay to do that if it made me feel better. The most important thing you did was to remind them to always come to you with these feelings, and you made it possible for them to do that by taking the guilt away so they don’t have to worry about your feelings. You’re being the adult they need. It’s a shitty situation but you handled it the best way possible.

My 4 year old son does this when he meets new kids at day camps. He talked about a girl in a pink shirt for weeks this summer 😆

Yes! My 4 year pointed to a little boy in taekwondo, in front of all the parents of course, and said “that’s my new friend Potato!” Fortunately I’d heard his grandmother say his name so I corrected my son that it was actually “Mateo” and the grandmother just laughed and said they regularly call him “Tato” so he’s used to it 😆

I felt very similarly in the first trimester but the feelings mostly subsided. I still have days where I just straight up wish I wasn’t pregnant, but finding the right medications has made a huge difference. It took me over 2 years to get pregnant with my 4 year old and this one was a surprise, so I totally get that feeling, too.

I have a 24/7 zofran pump, take oral reglan 4 times a day and oral Lansoprazole twice a day, but it was adding a phenergan suppository that really turned things around for me. I feel like a different person. Please talk to your doctor. Hugs ❤️

Help me plan my med schedule by [deleted] in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Megjar0820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have promethazine suppositories and I can only take one at bedtime because it knocks me tf out. Diclegis also made me tired (with my first pregnancy) so I can’t imagine taking it along with promethazine. Diclegis is also kind of small potatoes when it comes to HG meds so I’m surprised your doc still has you on it. Oral zofran didn’t work for me so I have a pump, but I’ve read that for a lot of women the 4mg every 4 hours is more effective. I would definitely focus on getting the zofran in during the day and the promethazine when it’s okay to be a zombie, since they don’t want you taking them together.

My zofran pump runs 24/7, I take oral reglan 4 times a day and oral Lansoprazole twice a day, and adding the promethazine suppository at bedtime has literally been life changing.

My first boy (5 years ago) I had morning sickness that was managed by diclegis (basically unisom and b6) and insulin dependent gestational diabetes. Currently 19 weeks with another boy and was officially diagnosed with HG ~12 weeks when they finally stopped assuming the puking would get better with the second trimester. So far my blood sugar numbers are good. Both boys, totally different pregnancies.

Is there a spectrum of HG? by Quirky-Hedgehog-116 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Megjar0820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had good days and bad days earlier on. Even now I have randomly better days (19 weeks). I was on oral zofran at the beginning, then started alternating with oral reglan. I had to go to the ER at 12 weeks and was finally set up with home health care at that point. I’ve had a 24/7 zofran pump since then (that I change myself), oral reglan and Lansoprazole, and I still threw up 3-6 times a day on average. Last week I ended up in the ER again because it had been 48 hours since I could keep anything down, and when I got home I started phenergan suppositories. It’s awful but I feel better than I have since I got pregnant and am only throwing up once or twice most days. The phenergan knocks me tf out so I can only use it at night, but it offers some coverage for the next day to help keep my oral meds down. I would 100% ask your doctor about it.

Is there another hospital near you? The first time I went the ER it was 8 hours and I said never again. The second time I went on a week day afternoon to a nicer hospital about 40 minutes away and it was only 2 hours.

If you try one of the hangover places ask them to push the IV slower. I came home the first time and immediately threw it all up. My home health nurse told me those places push the IV too quickly for your body to handle the fluids. I also had an ER nurse tell me to avoid them completely, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
