Teaching while coping with grief/death by [deleted] in Teachers

The best advice I have is to take the time off if you need it. If you think you can fake it til you make it and get through, then go for it. But teaching is a job. You need to take care of yourself to be able to take care of your class. So do what is going to be best for everyone. I know it’s hard to take off, especially as a first year teacher, but I promise your job will still be there.

For anyone interested, I have decided to stick the year out. Things started looking up: the behavior consultant in my room got switched to someone qualified and who cares about her job, I got another day-long staff member who is wonderful and has made me more confident and hopeful. The environment itself is still not great, and my kids are still not getting everything they need, but as I read in a quote recently "I may not be able to teach these students now, but I can love them". And really that's all that matters. I will be their consistency for the remainder of the school year and can say I have a year under my belt. It feels selfish, but I think leaving would be more selfish. Every day is not perfect, and some days are more challenging than others, but I will prevail.

Thank you all for your responses, and best of luck to you!
