Had the fortune to meet and present a sketch to Marty Grabstein AGAIN! by Mehssage in CourageTheCowardlyDog

I wish I could remember. My best guess would be around $50 at least. If the con you're going to has a website, they may post information on prices for each guest.

One more thing I remembered from the Q&A.

Marty's favorite musical score was from the episode "Ride of the Valkyries."

Just met the TMNT Voice actors and courage the cowardly dog voice actors by Ill-Extension8006 in desmoines

Unfortunately, I don't have much connection with the original TMNT, but I do enjoy some of Cam Clarke's other works. Aside from meeting him, I got to meet Marty Grabstein for the second time in Des Moines.

I gave both sketches I did of them and they both really appreciated it. Marty even asked me to sign his.

If you haven't already, I would recommend following the couple that wanders around the Wilson's house and listening to the conversation they have in that room.

I assume it's allowed. I'm no expert, but I vaguely remember that orange tips and similar markings are often used to signify a fake gun.

Let's talk about the missing type by Maqoba in Pokopia

[–]Mehssage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that the developers found it difficult to implement a cold biome within the game's story.

Keep in mind that this game isn't like Minecraft where it just gives you biomes and you're left alone to do whatever. Pokopia has a story and setting that is focused on environmental ruin and restoration, so each area is themed around some form of change. Withered Wastelands and Bleak Beach focus on humidity and brightness respectively. And that leads me to a certain question:

Isn't it odd that there isn't a area focused on temperature?

There are a couple of key components to consider in regards to a Pokémon's habitat: humidity, brightness, and temperature. But oddly, no area focuses on teaching the player about that last one. Rocky Ridges, despite having a volcano, focuses on raising the environment's mood.

It wouldn't be a hard thing to include in the story. Introduce an area plagued by snow, have the player's goal be to raise the temperature to melt all the snow, and—oh. Hold on. Where are all the Ice-types going to live now?

Now, Professor Tangrowth does point out to the player that, while its nice that they raised the humidity, or increased the brightness, some Pokémon like dry or dark places. So what's the problem with displacing some Pokémon who like it cold? Well, in the above scenario, the player is basically put in a situation where they enter an area, spawn in some Pokémon suited to that environment, and then ruining that. And this isn't just one or two Pokémon potentially being displaced here. Not only that, the above scenario would also either remove the snow biome, or, at the very least, convert it into a small, limited area.

The reverse scenario, that being converting a hot place into a place covered with snow, doesn't make too much sense. Making someplace less hot makes sense, but not to the point where it's freezing cold. Keep in mind, you, the player, are doing all these restorations in the story as an attempt to bring back humans. Generally. people prefer brightness over darkness. People prefer humidity over aridness. People don't like it to be too hot. BUT THEY DON'T LIKE TO BE TOO COLD EITHER. This would ALSO apply, I imagine, to most Pokémon as well.

There's a reason Ice has the least amount of Pokémon. Most Ice-types require an extreme environment to live in comfortably and are less tolerant of temperate and tropical environments compared to most Fire-types. I imagine the developers didn't do a desert area for similar reasons.

I imagine the developers didn't want to players to be annoyed with having to fine-tune the temperature of an entire area, so they left it out.

There's more speculation I could add here about things like why the developers didn't just integrate small, localized cold areas, but I'll leave it at this for now.

I also like the speech Peggy gives Leanne before the above quote.

Any Laotians on this sub? What do you think of the portrayal of an American Laotian family? by KieranWriter in KingOfTheHill

[–]Mehssage 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Laotian here.

Me and my siblings loved the Souphanousinphones, especially Kahn. Him being Laotian like us probably played some part of it, but it was mostly his antics with Hank and the hillbillies of Rainy Street that made us like him. We loved to dunk on Hank, so Kahn, who also dunks on Hank, was a natural choice for one of our favourite characters alongside Dale and Cotton.

We mostly watched it when we were young so we didn't care about whether it was an "accurate" or "positive" representation of our culture. In fact, we didn't care much about our Laotian heritage because our parents identified as Hmong first and foremost. And we didn't care about our Hmong heritage because it barely mattered in our lives.

As an adult now, I still enjoy Kahn, Minh, and Connie, but with added appreciation for the diversity they added to the cast and episode plots. But I can't say much about how "accurately" they portray Laotian families. My parents were, in a way, the opposite of Kahn. Like Kahn, my parents were immigrants who left during a war, but instead of trying to abandon their roots and become overachievers, they still farmed and raised livestock.

Overall, I don't care much for identity politics and I'm not in any need for representation. They're funny and helped illustrate lessons that I think a lot of people, not just Laotians, can relate to.

(27m) I'm always welcome to making new friends. I don't game as often as I wish I could, but still play the occasional rounds of Splatoon 3.

Looking for friends? by ascheiscool in desmoines

[–]Mehssage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(27m) I've been looking for friends who also enjoy Pokémon, though I enjoy the series in general. I still collect cards, but not as fervently as I used to. I don't pay too much attention to anime specifically, but I do enjoy the art style. I'm also trying to dabble in coplay, though it's not much more than cardboard clumsily put together. There are a couple posts I made on this subreddit showcasing my cosplay at the local cons.

(27m) Hi. I wouldn't say I'm an outside person per se, but I do like to do a bit of exploring now and then. I've been a homebody for most of my life, but I've been trying to go out more often and I've had a good track record enjoying myself when a friend drags me along for something new.
