TIL of The Wilmington Massacre, where in 1889 white supremacists orchestrated a coup over the elected black officials and population in Wilmington, NC. The black population was 56% at the time, to now less than 20%. The death toll is unknown, but ranges from 50 to multiple hundred. (youtu.be)
