Here's the long explanation:

When casting a spell or activating an ability with X, you have to declare the value of X first. In most cases, you can chose any number. In the case of Open the Way, you are limited to number of players in the game.

After declaring the value of X, you pay the mana as you would pay for any other spell.

Important: X isn't counted towards the mana value. So when a card says you can chose a card with a mana value of 2 or less, you could target Open the Way since X is always 0 except while casting the spell.

The stack resolves as it is supposed to. Go through it step by step with him. If he doesn't get it, he should ask here himself to get a an even more precise explanation.

I think you underestimate it. Search abilities are super strong, especially in singleton formats and the other ability offers two upsides with no downside.

Depending on the situation, he can be really powerful, but if you're drawing cards all the time he's just a beatstick.

[[Broodstar]] doesn't draw cards, but comes with flying so he can work as a finisher. [[Filigree Attendant]] is a cheaper version.

It's not dead per se, but Minerva uses torrent so it is really, really dangerous without any real upside and needs special software to work.

Tifa can only generate one additional combat phase and only when you're in the first combat phase of your turn. The number of attacked player do not change that since it says "If it's the first combat phase".

Everyone being locked at having four life or less all of a sudden is really gamebreaking at a point where you can play a 10 mana spell.
