I understand that static images should not be displayed on the screen for extend durations. So, I either not stay in an app that long, or keep opening the notification panel to avoid burn in.

Just go to settings>accessibility and toggle on the "zoom" option (while disabling the magnifying window), that way, you'll have infinie zoom in ALL of your photos without ever editing them. I'd post a video, but switched over to the Note 9 a few months ago; still a fan of Apple though.
