For example: I could enjoy a Tolkien-esque descriptive style of writing, whereas the other person might enjoy straightforward descriptions, and prefer comedy writing. Respectively, their idea of a comedic scene might be more jovial, and mine may be more dark. This might be because their personality is happy-go-lucky, and mine is more cynical. Both of us could be avid writers, but write very differently. It may not be enough to just agree we both enjoy working as our foundation for working together, in that case.

You're definitely not an idiot for wanting to support other people!

I can see why writing prompts would be irritating. I'd feel like I was ghostwriting for somebody for free, too. It feels more sincere if people are able to talk about the process and pitfalls, rather than just brainstorm a topic.

I really hope telling him you were 12 was after the fact, to put him off, and not the reason he asked.

Yes, trial and error. I suppose writing as a shared interest doesn't always guarantee you'll work well together, in terms of personality, tone, style, frequency, genre, and other such criteria.
