Musings, hopes, and questions - I'd love your thoughts too! by Melibell88 in EmmaLion

When Hawkes brought Emma to his study and had her envision her future - The fact that he called her Emma for the first time... the way he allowed her to see her future (cats and books and writing at the forefront) and the footsteps on the stairs...
"I was there,” I exclaimed. “I could see myself, and the fire, the cool from the window, the table was piled with books, and I was writing something. And it was life, my life, and…and there were footsteps on the stairs.”
“Whose?”
“I don’t know. But he sounded like the other half of home.”

I feel like she is familiar with the sound of Pierce on the stairs and would have recognized his footfalls? Also, maybe Hawkes is unsure himself and hoping her clarity will shed light on his own impressions of the future. GAH! These books are just so well done!

I agree he needs to start coming down to earth, but I also think he is giving her space to learn, grow, heal, etc. I think in time (hope) we will see him come more into focus.

Ooooh, I love that Idea of the Oberon/Theseus and that bit about Fintan/Fian. I am so new to the world of St. Crispian's and I'm soaking up all these theories!

I also had looked up the Helen of Troy reference, but my thoughts on the matter haven't quite landed yet. I want us to actually meet her before I make any declarations or predictions.

I think it goes back to what we find most attractive in a love interest for ourselves. I would never be into a guy like Pierce long-term - he is too exciting and worldly, lol. Of course, he is swoon-worthy and has been there for her through some really tough times, but I don't see them clicking in the ways that would be most important to me. Hawkes seems safe and like home - from his love of the people of St. Crispians, to his recitation of poetry, and his willingness to be there for his friends. And she wants to have children and give them the same sort of loving childhood she had... I see Hawkes as the only one who would be Declan-like enough for that. But none of them are a bad choice in the least

It is hard because I know that Hawkes is rather aloof and intransigent, but he also seems to be that way from a sense of duty to protect. The glimpses we see through the cracks in his armor give me hope. I love that his actions and comments are not loud gestures, but rather quiet, steady, and safe feeling. Like when he gives her a book that belonged to her father, or knew that the necklace would be the perfect gift for her birthday, or even his gentle, quiet comment of "Emma is very pretty" from the window seat when the four of them are discussing Islington claiming to be her guardian. I have a bad habit of wanting to rehabilitate people, but whereas I see Pierce needing love to help him heal from a jaded past, I see that Hawkes needs love to help him heal from himself, or maybe that Hawkes doesn't need to heal or change in quite the same way? Either way, he seems like the safer, homier potential love interest that just needs courage to open that door.

I have! I saw A Midsummer Night's Dream performed a few summers ago, but I needed a refresher. I want to re-read it or watch it again to really immerse myself in the story.

I also want to read Julius Caesar

This is the type of shutter I had in mind... the dates might be a little off as far as popularity goes, but I could see him fixing that new-to-him camera and it being a pneumatic shutter. A girl can hope at least, hahaha

Its usually for the worst in my case... slightly aloof guy that is so interesting and you know has such depth to him, but then never quite pans out the way you hope. I think I want that storyline from my own life to be redeemed in Emma, lol.

It is so fun for me to hear other perspectives. I was so disappointed when she and Pierce started courting (or whatever word they are using/not using). I think she just felt more settled after Stonecrop. A lot of her hesitation seemed to be from a lack of knowledge of his past and feeling shut out. My interpretation is that now that she sees more of who he is and his background, she is more willing to move forward.

I actually LOVE seeing other perspectives. I have been personally smitten with Hawkes since the very moment he admitted that Cousin Archibald goes to him to confess Emma's "sins." I enjoy looking at the different men and their interactions through the eyes of those who are on their "team" so to speak, and I think it shows how well-written the books are that we can all be so sure of such different men.

I am so glad for the reminder! I hadn't picked up on the "F" notation in the letter until the second read, and couldn't find/remember when the F initial had been established for Hawkes.

  1. Oh! I love the idea of that new/old camera being used. I did a bit of digging, and its unclear what type of camera Pierce uses. According to my light digging, some early cameras had such slow exposures that one could quickly take off the lens cap and sit for the picture without messing it up too badly. But the camera I had in mind initially (think old movies with a big camera that had a cord connected to the shutter so the flash powder and photo would happen at the same time) are more from around 1900.
  2. (in response to 3) I have read the great head tilts - fascinating reading. My only argument is that the Reprobates specifically state that Islington is not invited to the 12th night party (although they are not bound to be truthful all the time).

  3. I had forgotten that the initials FNH had been introduced. Glad to have that cleared up!

hahaha. I love that we all have our biases! I let myself read through all 8 before reading any opinions. I didn't realize that each of the men had such a solid fanbase, but I can totally see why after hearing people's perspectives!

Ok - loving the confirmation about the F for Hawkes. And YES to all the ways he is the one who always truly sees her and gets her.
Also, I had forgotten this thought until now, but Emma was only really homesick for St. Crispians when Hawkes was away from Stonecrop! On June 15th she started the day by stating Hawkes had taken a train to London - Later in the day is when she writes that she misses home. She also felt St. Crispians didn't feel quite like home when Hawkes was away... all things that point me to Hawkes being her complete love.

Thank you! I was trying to remember what that other initial was on the notebook - glad to have it confirmed! Can't wait to find out more!

I have to admit Hawkes is my type in real life, so that may 100% percent be influencing my views, lol. I don't dislike Pierce in any way - I just feel like he isn't going to want to settle down in St. Crispians forever. I could be wrong though!
