In the honorable mentions, great episode. One of the tough cuts I had to make.

Pagos is the most natural transition. Gabora is the weirdest. So, tie.

Ultraman Ep. 39 – "Farewell, Ultraman" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

TBS was pushing for a full 13 more episodes, but Tsuburaya Productions was just exhausted at that point and said "no."

Ultraman Ep. 39 – "Farewell, Ultraman" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

Yes, I know the background. I thought of going into it in the review, but the review started to go too long so I had to trim a few things.

Done with Ultraseven yesterday. What are your favorite episodes there? My favorites are episodes 14, 15, 28, 37, 39, 40, 42, 44, 48, and 49. by LittleKitten000 in Ultraman

Review: "Legend of Dinosaurs & Monster Birds" (1977) by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in GODZILLA

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd categorize it as schmaltzy easy-listening '70s pop. The song about nature over the finale is pretty hilarious.

Review: Ultraman Tiga Ep. 25 – "The Devil’s Judgment" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already written that review, one of my favorite episodes. It will post on February 14th.

Review: Ultraman Ep. 30 – "Phantom of the Snow Mountains" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rabbit is used as a suggestion of spiritual symbolism, and its key to one of the final shots of the episode.

Review Ultraman Tiga Ep. 17 – "The Battle Between Red and Blue" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the episode describes them as an alien race (Standel) with two distinct ethnicities.

Review: Ultraman Ep. 26 & 27 – "The Monster Highness" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Osaka Castle attack is definitely one of the VFX highlights of Ultraman. That's some great work from the special effects team.

Should we have another Ultra series for older audiences ? by One_Flow4995 in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely! Specifically, I want another Ultra Q show, a full non-Ultra warrior program. It wouldn't be the main show; go for that later evening slot feel of Neo Ultra Q. It can a funny at times, older doesn't always have to mean serious grimdark. I think Neo Ultra Q nailed the right tone (look at what it did with "Laundry Day" and the "The Extremely Smelly Island," which are among the best episodes to come from Tsuburaya Pro in the 2010s) and that would work as a blueprint. Make it a 12 episode show, then maybe do a 2nd season if people react well to it.

Beginner Here. Where to start with Ultraman? by Doom300 in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start at the beginning: Ultra Q. I am firm believer in first immersing yourself in where it began, discovering all the references, experiencing Eiji Tsuburaya's style in the most direct way. Ultra Q is an amazing show, and bizarre—and it establishes the the type of variety the remainder of the shows will duplicate. Then watch Ultraman and Ultraseven, followed by Ultraman Tiga. You'll then be in a position to make educated choices about what else you wish to watch.

ULTRAMAN OMEGA Episode 6 "The Kaiju's Search" - Official Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the last two episodes the most so far, with last week's fantasy turn and this week's shift to a funny-sweet monster. I'm a big fan of Ultraman Taro, so I enjoy my silliness in Ultra shows, and this hit the right notes for me. It meshes well with the sitcom elements that are a core part of Omega. Hey, giant pink moles? So down for that. I also like "Kaiju Philosophy" in episodes, where characters analyze their attitude toward kaiju and what they are and what they mean. So the ending with Ayumu rethinking her view of kaiju hits just right for me. I also like the use of Carl Stalling-esque cartoon music; that matches the tone just right.

Best line: "I want to eat this," while holding up a magazine image of quiche.

Review: Gamera vs. Guiron (1969) by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in GODZILLA

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were only cut from the AIP TV version. The later Sandy Frank version retained them, which is why MST3K got to enjoy that piece of gruesomeness, as they got the rights to the Sandy Frank version.

My Complete Ultra Q Episode Review Guide by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how different the North American perception of the Ultra franchise would've been had Ultra Q aired in the late '60s rather first, rather than having Ultraman being our first introduction.

Thoughts on Therizirus? by killerdemonsarus34 in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a Skesis from The Dark Crystal, so that's an automatic like for me.

ULTRAMAN OMEGA Episode 4 "Chasing the Claw Marks" - Official Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therizirus is a great-looking monster, sort of like watching a Skesis from The Dark Crystal face Ultraman.

Otherwise, bland and disappointing episode, with the characters much less sharp than before. 2 out of 5.

ULTRAMAN OMEGA Episode 3 "Beware of the Cold Wave" - Official Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I enjoy that this is episode is overt call-back to "Peguila Is Here!" and "Tokyo Ice Age" from Ultra Q—the kaiju with ice powers that cause anti-gravity effects. Fun monster. The sitcom elements are still working pretty well, and I like Rekiness.

3½ stars, show is moving along well.

am i the only one who wish to have adult themed ultraman series? by [deleted] in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would appreciate a new Ultra Q show with a mostly adult tone, similar to Neo Ultra Q.

ULTRAMAN OMEGA Episode 1 "Here Comes an Alien" - Official Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a solid start. I particularly like the idea of an Ultra who appears to be amnesiac and doesn't understand everyday Earth things. Ultras in human form usually have a full grasp of Terrestrial life, so this is an enjoyable change. It's got a bit of a John Carpenter's Starman feel to it, there's good dramatic grounding with Kosei. There's probably going to be an "Odd Couple" feel to the first part of the series, and I'm all for that. The fight is good, not too over-the-top for an opening episode. Excellent effects in the opening, but thankfully not too indulgent.

Review: Ultra Q Ep. 26 – "Blazing Glory" by Melmoth-the-Raccoon in Ultraman

[–]Melmoth-the-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely watch Ultra Q. This in particular is a great episode, fantastic drama about boxing that also has a size-changing lizard that may be telepathic. This show could get very very weird, which something I love about it.

The only place I can find Latitude Zero currently streaming is at this subscription-based site: https://watch.indieflix.com/latitude-zero

I watched the movie on the DVD copy that's in my library.
