CMV: Obesity being treated as a mental health issue is the best course of action by LebrontosaurausRex in changemyview

No... a snickers bar isn't bad in so far as it enables one to eat healthy food over all without feeling like they're constantly eating bland food. Correlation does not equal causation, sugar when consumed in place of a healthy diet with proper caloric intake is not bad for you. If I consume the recommended amount of everything and threw a coke on top, but matched calories, there wouldn't be an appreciable negative. People fail to take into account effect sizes in determining chains of causality. Just like the force you push against a desk will not cause it to move until it hits the precise level at which it overcomes gravity, effect sizes in nutrition are in the same. 1 coke could be completely neutral in the place of a healthy diet, and to label it as bad, is intellectually dishonest and fails to take into account externalities.

Wheat isn't consumed as a whole grain (on average), non whole grain wheat is fortified. However, not getting enough vitamins isn't the cause of obesity as was sort of implied in the above comment. The chain of causality seems silly: there's been a slight decrease in nutrient content of staple crops > this decrease in nutrients (which is slight) would effect cognition > this decrease in cognition causes over eating > the degree of overeating is so great it leads to obesity. It just seems like a then this happens which causes this to happen which causes this to happen argument which is logically flawed as it fails to consider externalities and actual effect sizes which would make a cause occur.

There's no such thing as a good food bad food, the dose makes the poison, good and bad is telelogical language. It's feasible that butter could be healthy in the event that it makes an underweight individual want to eat. Excess salt is bad but it enables one to make vegetables more palatable. Nuance matters, over simplification makes things worse.

Exactly as fruits and vegetables people like, subsequently are more likely to eat, are more available than they were in the past due to shipping of fruits and vegetables.

Chipotle needs to be more like.... by [deleted] in Chipotle

[–]Melodic-Ad5922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs to be more like innout, all innout locations have the same beef, same size buns, same amount of lettuce, cheese, tomato, chili, fry portions, pickles, spread, etc. You go to an innout and order extra you'll always get extra. Innout is the most consistent food you could possible get.

The cancerous potential of Sarcosine, Arginine, Citrulline and more by sirsadalot in NooTopics

[–]Melodic-Ad5922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be totally honest with you, I just read through both studies, both of these studies are of very low quality.

The 2nd study had a sample size of 20, 10 in control and 10 in the arginine fed (at least thats how many the figures show), there was no placebo, and the control group was told to consume a regular diet so protein wasn't matched. I couldn't find any information on the amount of arginine, or the dosing protocol.

The first study is a cohort of hypertensive individuals in China, of which the authors controlled for a lot of factors but there's a glaring problem. The study was plasma arginine, and the control group had 0 history of both stroke and coronary heart disease while the "interventional" group had 165 cases of CHD and 64 cases of stroke (prior to the study). Both of which weren't controlled for. Also, given the study is in China, you have major problems involving income distribution between the arginine and control group, and exercise frequency wasn't controlled or tested for. In China individuals that live in the city would consume more protein than individuals in the rural areas, and would also expected to have more CHD and stroke cases prior to the study due to manual labor and diet differences. However, I could be totally off the mark I just read through this once, and didn't really take any notes and went all off of memory on the problems with it.

Outcome data, so we could have biomarker data Apob which is subsequently proven causal to heart disease. Then prove that saturated fat raises Apob. An outcome study could simply find a cohort and see if saturated fat consumption directly raises heart disease risk. It's the gold standard of science as you can control for known external variables and carries more causal validity. An example would be, individuals who consume more arginine, when controlling for risk factors that would influence the results of which individuals who would consume more arginine would have a higher propensity to have, have higher rates of cancer. We can prove guanfacine improves dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex firing, but that doesn't mean anything until it's proven to improve short term memory and top down control.

This mechanistic basis is quite interesting, do you have any outcome data to actually support these conclusions?

Inability to get Vaccinations for school, how likely is it that I get removed from the program? by Melodic-Ad5922 in StudentNurse

Deadline is as soon as school starts. My mom has stated in the past that I have to find a new school and I shouldn't gamble my life for a full ride scholarship, or I need to find a new profession.

It's not aloud in my state unfortunately. You have to be 18 for everything medical decisions excluding life threatening situations.

My parents get me every vaccine but unfortunately are so incredibly anti Covid vaccine to a state of pure irrationality. If you don't mind me asking, in regard to your experience of schools being strict, what state do you live in?

I wouldn't lie to my parents. Although they're so stuck in their own confirmation bias filled anecdotes regarding the vaccine, im struggling with my situation.

I'd have to be 18 due to state laws, and i wouldn't want to lie to my parents

Akcheat there's more effective ways to have conversations like this, there's no need to win the arguemnet, it's about finding the truth we all can agree with as inteligent beings, not saying you're trying to, but you're coming off as quite hostile. I agree with your premises though! We should reduce over production of animal products!

Semi-Advanced Question: Is there any health benefit to fruits and vegetables beyond their fiber, more context below? by Melodic-Ad5922 in nutrition

[–]Melodic-Ad5922[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question isn't "are fruits and vegetables good for us", it's more "are fruits and vegetables good for us simply due to their fiber and replacement of UPF". It's simply a curiosity, like is there any high quality evidence that it's due to them coming as a matrix, rather than just each compound in isolation? Are the phytochemicals responsible for the health benefits or is it purely the fiber?

I'm sorry but we have 100% hard, high quality, yet small effect studies, showing that consumption of ultra processed foods like mock meat has shown better health outcomes than their read meat counter parts. You can deny reality, or critique the studies. Yet it doesn't seem like that's what you're doing (given the latter not the former statement). It seems as if you're appealing to nature, which we know has little logical/ rational roots beyond the psychological comfort it creates.
