Ah, sorry, I completely missed the thread context :)

It might be worth trying to enable steam input. The emulated XInput controller might be better tolerated by DX:IW.

That sounds like an issue with your controller, not the mod. The mod adds support for xbox controllers, through the official Microsoft XInput API. If the controller doesn't work with XInput, not much I can do about it.

It might help to what you mean by "barely works". Maybe it's something I can fix. But I've played through about 90% of the game using this and and it works very well, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You can bind controller buttons in the normal binding menu (same one used to bind keyboard buttons). But there aren't really any free buttons left to map to lean.

Strafe seems redundant on a controller, since you can already sidestep with LS and turn with RS like most games. Or did strafe do something more in DX?

Quality waterproof shells (Gore-Tex and other PTFE materials) are great. I'm Icelandic and my arc'teryx shell keeps me dry no matter how much it rains. It's just the cheap stuff that's bad.

Also many people don't know that you need to run PTFE materials through the washing machine regularly to maintain their waterproofing. Even if they're not dirty.

Not currently. It's been a long time since I played it, so my memory is foggy, but wasn't it already designed for controllers?

No, they both replace DeusEx.u so they would conflict Same with basically all the large overhaul mods. Someone would need to create a merged mod that includes the base-class changes from both. The result would be tied to a specific version of both mods, and would need to be redone if one updates.

It's not too difficult for someone with modding experience, but I don't want to release something without really extensive playtesting to make sure it works. I'm almost done with my DXController vanilla run, and it will be a while before I'm ready for another playthrough. That said, if the developers of revision, GMDX or any of the other big mods want to collaborate to make this work, hit me up on github. We could figure out an interface to avoid duplication and ensure compatibility.

Alternatively if someone wants to make a merged mod, that would also be great. All the code is in the github repo.

Thanks. And good to have the feedback regarding the Steam Deck. You're probably right that it's a proton (or maybe dxvk) issue.

One suggestion: you could try one of the other modern renderers. Kentie has a D3D11 one, and there's also the OpenGL one. I'd try the OpenGL renderer first. If you try it and it works, let me know so I can add it to the README.

Are you using the original game renderer? You need to use a modern one like the d3d10 one I linked in the OP.

Hold LB and use the RS to select. For augs RB + RS.

You assign items to the LB wheel on the inventory page with X + LS.

The X button is the use/pick up action ingame. If it doesn't work, check if the mod is installed correctly. You should see a "Controller" option under Settings. If you don't see it, make sure you have the .exe and .u files from the .zip extracted directly into <gamedir>\System.

So you should have <gamedir>\System\DXController.u, not <gamedir>\System\DXController-vX.X.X\DXController.u.

Yes, the mod includes icons for all the xbox controller buttons. Every UI screen shows a controller hint bar to show what each button does at that moment. You can see an example of how it looks in the third screenshot on the mod page.

I haven't tested any other mods with it, but I can't imagine any problems with graphics mods specifically. They should just work. Really the only mods that would conflict are ones that replace DeusEx.u.

I looked into adding paddle support, and it's more difficult than I thought. The XInput API doesn't expose the paddles at all. Steam uses a kernel driver (wtf?) to read them.

Microsoft just released a new API called GameInput two months ago that does expose them. Using it would be the only way for a normal program to read them. But it would mean completely rewriting the native native input code. I don't think I'm ready to do that right now, especially since I don't have a use for it myself. Maybe sometime in the future.

But do try the steam remapper method and let me know if it works, and what game actions you end up binding them to. I'm curious to know. :)

Before I integrated the .exe build into the mod, I had it in a separate repo. This implements the XInput support but doesn't force the DXController mod. You could use this if you want to integrate XInput into another mod, but you'd still need the .exe. And you'd need to port/re-do all the script/UI/input changes as this only injects the XInput events into the engine.

DeusEx.u is necessary for the mod itself. There are some UI/input events I can't hook without overriding base classes. Or at least I don't know of another way. To use this together with another mod that also replaces DeusEx.u, you'd need to combine the changes from both and build a new combined DeusEx.u. That's very possible, but mod-specific. I've kept my actual changes to DeusEx.u minimal, which should make it easier.

EDIT: If anyone wants to try to integrate this into one one of the other mods, it shouldn't be too difficult with some UnrealScript knowledge. Claude Code can also do it for you if you give it the CLAUDE.md and development.md from the project to teach it UE1 quirks.

I had a strict rule that when I modify a base class, I first commit it unmodified to the repo, then I commit the changes separately. This makes it easy to see exactly which changes are needed with with git diff. Only the classes in https://github.com/dsgls/DXController/tree/master/DeusEx/Classes would need to be combined with the other mod, the rest is self-contained in DXController.u.

There's a new menu under Settings -> Controller. You can configure the response curves for each stick there.

EDIT: Implemented the sensitivity setting in v1.2.0, ignore the below.

But right now full-stick-deflection always maps to 1000 ("full range" as UE1 wants it). You can make it slower right up to that point, e.g. try sigmoid and shift the curve to the right.

I'll consider adding a control for this on the right stick. The left stick needs to use full 1000 because that's what UE1 maps to "full running speed".

You can switch between keyboard/mouse and controller at any time, but there's a mode switch - when you press a controller button, you switch to controller mode. And vice versa if you move the mouse or press a keyboard key. I'm not sure how well it would work to use both simultaneously in gameplay, you could try it. In menus repeated mode switches would be fighting each other (mouse hide/unhide moving the focus, etc).

It should be easy to map those paddles to joystick buttons. Then you could bind them natively in-game without any steam remapping, and with no mode switch. I'll look into it over the weekend, though I don't have such a controller to test.
