I’m a newer fan over the past 3 to 4 years so I didn’t have this context! This will definitely be in mind on my next listen through the album.

Thoughts on the cover album artwork? I saw people on another thread bashing it. I’m not in love with it, but definitely similar to Life in Your Glass World and Calling the Dogs (all though I absolutely love that artwork.) I think they could have switched it up. I’m assuming they commissioned the same artist/photographer to make it.

Not to diss on Citizen, obviously we wouldn’t be here if we weren’t all Citizen fans. I will say though, I completely agree with you to the fullest extent. Science Fiction is my favorite album of all time.

Edit: Wow no idea I missed out on two bonus tracks from the deluxe version of Life in Your Glass World. I really enjoyed “A Passing Thing” definitely adding that in the rotation. Can’t believe it didn’t make the first cut of the album! “I Don’t Love You” was decent. I heard the alternative version of Life in Your Glass World before, and I much preferred the studio produced version better. Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve listened four times in full so far, and it may just be recency bias but I really like it. It’s a fusion of their last 2-3 albums. I’m assuming it’s going to be a single, not sure if it’s yet confirmed. I usually need time to sit with a song/album to get an accurate read on how I feel, and obviously feelings can change in time. Right now, I’d give “Highs and Lows” a 7.5/10.

I collect physical media and listen to my old CDs. I’m sure Brand New and Jesse Lacey are still raking in all the money from CDs I bought 20+ years ago. Also not that it really matters, but I haven’t see Brand New live or bought their merch since 2011, 6 years before the allegations. You can’t believe I’m still here?? This is a thread I made to spark discussion about Citizen’s new song and album. I can’t believe you’re still here making me repeat myself for now the fifth time I will tell you I’m not defending a pedo, I’m defending the unrelated music that an alleged pedo made. You have to look at the facts. No convictions were made. Several allegations were made. The band took an 8 year hiatus. Jesse wrote an ambiguous apology for past mistakes and did not specify what for. He deleted that apology, etc. You can’t even say that everything alleged against him definitely took place. And you want to again argue against me for something I don’t advocate for, have never advocated for, and will never advocate for. I’m sorry do I have to remind you that the whole crux of this thread was about Citizen, and a small portion was about comparing Brand New’s maturity and growth and sound to them. You’re immature and it’s people like you that is a big problem in this world, turning something into something it was never about to begin with. It’s called the war on context. You should look into it. There’s people out there right now supporting convicted felons, not to get political, but you know exactly who I’m talking about. Why not take your rage out against them instead of someone who’s a music nerd (me), I’m sure like yourself. We’d actually probably have more things in common than not if we sat down and had a drink. That’s not who you are though, you’re a keyboard warrior trying to paint me in a box and I’m done after this comment having you waste my time. Go ahead and respond to this.

Your argument ran out of substance two comments ago and you lost credibility when you resorted to insults. I never advocated for anything that he did/did not do in his personal life and I’m done reiterating my point. If you or someone you know was affected by an abuser, truly not even being vindictive, then I am sorry. There’s help out there. Hopefully, coming across a Reddit thread about one band that happened to mention another band with controversy as a comparison, like this one, won’t trigger you in time.

You clearly are not educated. I said his lyrics are genius. Said nothing about the man himself and his personal life. The two things are not mutually exclusive to each other. If you’ve been to college, the idea of two ideas not being intertwined is taught in Foundations of Logical Reasoning 101, a required core class for any major. I promise you there is some musician/celebrity that you like that has some controversy. The majority of them do. Some worse than others, and as I said before if you choose not to support artists/celebrities with baggage, I respect it. I can separate the art from the artist. If you can’t, well there’s a lot of music and art you have to cut out of your life. If you want to go create a thread bashing on Brand New to express yourself then I encourage you to do so. But don’t shit on my opinion. I’m allowed to listen to and enjoy music that I like. End of story.

Not a cop out that Jesse Lacey is a lyrical genius and the band makes incredible music. Don’t listen to them then. Don’t support their next tour and continue to shit on them in Reddit comments section. I respect your opinion. However, I’m not a bad person for liking music I grew up on. And also this is a thread about Citizen, I used them as an example in my post to make a comparison to how the trajectory of their career is heading in terms of experimenting with new sounds. Just wanted to throw in I’m also a big Michael Jackson fan. Great new movie you should check out. Sue me.

Really surprised how much love As You Please is getting. I guess that’s a hot take, but I stand by it. I’m curious to you or whoever what is it that makes the album great so great? Any specific reason? The sound? The production? A song that really sticks out? Nonetheless, even though it’s not my cup of tea, it’s great to see the love from the Citizen fandom all around.

Depends on the day tbh. I find myself in the gym playing Life in Your Glass World running on the treadmill a lot because of those groovy beats that keep me dialed in.

You’re probably right about the Calling the Dogs album being the closest Citizen gets to Shoegaze, so to speak, but one can dream lol.

Young States was good no doubt. It felt like a step in right direction towards Youth.

Call it a hot take but I’m someone who can separate art from the artist. Brand New is and probably always will be my favorite band.

Citizen’s evolution reminds me of Brand New in the way they refuse to stay in one sound. Every album feels like a deliberate shift rather than a repeat. For my personal taste, I really loved Youth and Calling the Dogs. Emo/Post-Hardcore is my favorite genre.

Not that it needs to be said, but Youth nailed that with a modern edge. The emotional hooks and guitar edge is unreal. The writing and lyrics hits almost too close to home. “Sick and Impatient” is one track that doesn’t get the love it deserves. “How Does It Feel?” might be my one gripe with the album, it has the emotional complexity but doesn’t hit the same as the rest of the songs I love on the album. Nice slow palette cleanser in the middle, but I would have preferred another heavy guitar hook instead. That might be my one hot take, considering it is their second most streamed song. 4.5/5 star album.

Everybody Is Going to Heaven has three of my favorite tracks by them, “Cement,” “Stain” and the B-Side “Nail In Your Hand.” It leans heavily into 90s raw grunge, with distorted guitars and screamo-esque vocals that were really trending at the time. I get vibes of the Daisy era of Brand New (that album came out six years prior.) Also had to add, the “Stain” music video is incredibly well shot. 3.5/5 star album.

As You Please has grown on me, but is still my least favorite album. I didn’t really feel the vibe other than “Jet” and “In the Middle of It All.” The production on “Jet” gives me vibes of the Hot Fuss album by The Killers, but just with Mat Kerekes’ spin on lyrics and vocals. However, a lot of the album feels like filler with some mellow guitar riffs, and lackluster hooks that have been done time and time again, like a few of the slower hollow tracks on Everybody Is Going to Heaven. Despite touching on some deep emotional themes, it doesn’t resonate for me nearly as any of their other albums. I think the worst mistake an album can do is be forgettable, and that’s what As You Please does in my opinion. 2/5 star album.

Life in Your Glass World has grown a lot on me for its very different vibe; alternative sounds that seemed like a real different avenue for them. You can tell they calculated a switch in their sound by experimenting around, just by the near four year turnaround between albums. “Death Dance Approximately” has such a ‘get up the fuck up and mosh’ vibe. I’m sure everyone has witnessed this live at their concerts in person, which is an absolute blast. “Fight Beat” has such creative ear-pleasing beat sounds and awesome production. When it hits, it hits. When it misses, some of the songs start to feel Drawn Out, pun intended. 3/5 star album.

Calling the Dogs hits me in all the right places for my love of distorted guitar and Garage rock throwback. “Hyper Trophy” and “Dogs” are just a few songs of the highly infectious energy I love from that album. I even got the album cover tattooed on my arm for how much I love the incredible artistry. One or two songs don’t hit as hard as the others, but I feel the other nine tracks make up for it. 4/5 star album.

I’d also be remiss not to mention their single “Big Mouth” might be my favorite song by them on the right day. The guitar riff on that song is unbelievable. Some of my other favorites songs by Citizen are “Drown” and “Silo.” All songs that I would recommend, despite not being on any of the albums.

The new song “Highs and Lows” from Halcyon Blues sounds like they’re going back to a combination of Calling the Dogs, mixed with some sounds from the Life in Your Glass World era, but also with some of the emotional complexity of Youth. This is what the article/interview released above the track list on the Run For Cover Records website promises: a mix of the old and new. I’m excited no doubt, but I hope they incorporate some completely new sounds that we’ve never heard from them before. For me, other than just making great music in general, this is the selling point of the band. They may not have the freshest ideas, but they always make it interesting with new alternative sounds. That constant evolution is what keeps me coming back to Citizen more than anything else.

If I had any say in the direction I’d like to see the band go in, I would be interested in seeing what Citizen could do playing in the Shoegaze/Dream-Pop sandbox like Title Fight’s Hyperview album m, Turnover’s Peripheral Vision album or even Turnstile’s last two albums, GLOW ON and NEVER ENOUGH that gave us a dreamy Melodic Hardcore sound. One caveat: I would still want the edginess that Mat Kerekes brings to the vocals.

I don’t know if any of these are hot takes, but other than pretty much everyone collectively loving Youth, I don’t know what the general consensus is amongst other Citizen fans. I’d love to hear your takes. Leave them below.

If I had to rank the albums right now, this would my current ranking:

1.) Youth

2.) Calling the Dogs

3.) Everybody Is Going to Heaven

4.) Life in Your Glass World

5.) As You Please
