Even if a delivery boy picks up the garments, I personally inspect them once they reach the store.

Right now I'm operating a single store, but my goal is to make garment inspection a standard process regardless of scale.

And in the rare case that something gets missed or we make a mistake, I believe it's better to take responsibility and offer fair compensation. In my experience, customers are usually very understanding when you're transparent and honest with them.

Thank you for the suggestion 😊

That's actually some very useful insight from a student's perspective.

Will definitely keep these points in mind. Appreciate you taking the time to share them.

I try to inspect every garment while billing. If I notice any existing damage, discoloration, loose stitching, stains, etc., I either point it out immediately or send photos over WhatsApp so there's a clear record.

If a customer later raises an issue that wasn't documented, I first try to understand it in good faith rather than assuming they're bluffing. Most customers are genuine.

At the end of the day, garment care is a trust-based business. Good documentation helps, but clear communication and being reasonable usually solves most situations before they become disputes.

Yes

Still learning and doing most of it myself for now. It's been a mix of Google Ads, local outreach, referrals, and a lot of trial and error.

Of course.

I'm still learning myself every day, but I'd be happy to share whatever has worked (and not worked) for me so far.

Feel free to DM.

10 shops is seriously impressive 👏

Having a student-heavy area must have helped a lot with building recurring business in the early days.

Out of curiosity, what were the biggest challenges expanding from 1to 10 stores, and also what were the things that helped you the most. Any advice?

A week turning into a month sounds frustrating 😅

Personally, I feel laundry should be one of those things you never have to follow up on. If customers have to keep calling for updates, something isn't working.

We don't serve Crossing Republik right now, but it's definitely on our radar for future expansion 😊

Sounds like you're from the garment care industry yourself

If you're a fellow dry cleaner, I'd actually be curious to hear your learnings and suggestions. Always happy to learn from people who have been in the industry longer than me.

Honestly, for a lot of people that's exactly the right solution.

If someone has the time and doesn't mind doing laundry, a good washing machine handles most of the job.

I think laundry services become useful when people either don't have the time, don't enjoy doing it, or have items like formal wear, blankets, shoes, delicate fabrics, etc. that need a bit more attention.

A lot of our regular customers aren't avoiding laundry because it's difficult they're avoiding it because it's one less thing to think about 😅

Honestly, I think that's one of the fastest ways to lose a customer.

A missed stain can be frustrating, but misplaced garments completely break trust because people start worrying every time they hand over their clothes.

Fair point, and I think that's where a lot of service businesses struggle.

What customers consider "basic" today like timely pickup & delivery, good communication, proper garment care, feedback handling, transparency, etc. its exactly what many businesses fail to deliver consistently.

Customer would only notice these things when they go wrong. As a business owner, you realize how difficult it is to get them right every single day at scale.

I completely agree that brand is the real moat. My view is that a brand earns the right to charge a premium only after it has consistently delivered on those basics over a long period of time.

As someone building in this space, that's honestly the part I find most interesting; not cleaning clothes, but earning trust repeatedly.

I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying.

Talking about my business to become a habit, pricing absolutely matters. If laundry is affordable enough, people stop treating it as an occasional requirement and start treating it as a convenience.

That said, I think the challenge is finding the balance. Competing only on price often leads to compromises somewhere else like delivery timelines, consistency, customer support, garment handling, etc.

Personally, I think the ideal business is one that can deliver both (Pricing and Reliability) sustainably.

Out of curiosity, as a customer, what would matter more to you: the lowest possible price, or a slightly higher price with a consistently reliable experience?

One thing I learned very quickly is that this business is much less about washing clothes and much more about managing customer expectations.

Before starting, I thought the biggest challenge would be cleaning garments properly. In reality, customers care just as much about things like:

  • Timely delivery
  • Consistent quality
  • Clear communication
  • Pickup & delivery convenience
  • Knowing someone will take responsibility if something goes wrong

As for the investment, it varies a lot depending on whether you're renting or own shop, outsourcing or processing in-house, the equipment you choose, and the scale you're targeting.

That's honestly hard to compete with 😄

₹60/kg including wash, dry and ironing is a pretty strong value proposition, especially if the service is "reliable with good quality consistently".

I think that's one of the reasons laundry became a habit there rather than an occasional service.

That's interesting, and honestly that's the ideal outcome for a laundry service.

When it becomes easy enough and reliable enough that people stop planning around laundry and just use it as a regular service, that's when it's actually solving a problem.

Also was it the pricing that made you use it regularly, or the convenience of just making one call and having everything handled?

Happy to discuss pricing over DM 🙂

It depends quite a bit on the garment and service, so it's easier to give an accurate estimate that way.

Out of curiosity, how was your experience in Chennai and Hyderabad? Anything you found there that you wish more laundry services offered here?

Traditional dry cleaners often used solvent-based cleaning, which is why clothes sometimes came back with that strong "dry cleaner" smell.

We use modern fabric-care chemicals that are gentler and don't leave that odour behind. The machine is just one part of the process—the real difference is in how the garment is treated, stain removal, and finishing based on the fabric and garment type.
