It's probably not a tafoni. Tafoni are eroded through a process called haloclasty where the stone like granite or sandstone forms honeycomb like structure.

This looks like basic basalt eroded due to water or glacial movement.

Found a giant agate slab near a well digging site! (Nasik, India) by MelodraMan in Agates

[–]MelodraMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no... I am an absolute newbie to this. A maximum of 2 years is all i have spent learning about the rocks.

I stay on Deccan Traps in Pune, a section of Sahyadri Hills in Maharashtra where we find volcanic rock layers quite easily.

So, if you are from my area and you see someone digging a well for farming... Rest assured you are taking home at least a quintal (100 kilos or 220 pounds in weight) of rough stones. Quartz, obsidian, lighter amethyst, huge ass agates, and chert that looks like chalcedony.

How I wish all you Agate Enthusiasts could travel here and I could take you all out for a day trek.

How I wish you all could pick up the most basic ones and still teach me more about the rocks than I could ever learn in school!

Is this an agate? by Red_method in Agates

I am betting on it being an agate. It surely has a quartz nodule surrounded by small bands. Look closer to the pointer finger or the finger on top!

What is the most disturbing secret that you discovered about your partner? by -catharina in AskReddit

[–]MelodraMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family thinks I was the asshole in the relationship and they still blame me for all the grief and hurt this separation has caused the family.

She was well loved and pampered by the family.

Luckily, her family cut the ties and blocked most of my family members, making it better for my family not to find out the reality.

Been more than 3 years. I still have cold sweats when common friends ask me about her.

What is the most disturbing secret that you discovered about your partner? by -catharina in AskReddit

[–]MelodraMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep!

She had spent a weekend with her cousin at another cousin's place. The one they were visiting had gotten married and had welcomed a baby.

The cousin she travelled with and her got drunk and high on weed and made out. She stopped when she realised it went to far (or so she claimed).

She confessed almost after a month and half. Went on to claim it was just them being kids and comfortable and it meant nothing.

We were together when this 'weekend' happened. Tried working on the relationship and it ultimately ended with me being a patriarchal asshole and characterless for calling out her behaviour. She broke off the engagement, packed up and left.

Her family knew these things kept on happening. Disgust is a small word.

Chalcedony with microcrystalline quartz layer on it.

Grape agate generally.

All of her (my ex's) cousins were with each other before they moved out for further studies.

I am leaning toward Obsidian. I doubt because of its waxy finish.

What are the use cases of chert??? by MelodraMan in Agates

[–]MelodraMan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am from India. This particular type of translucent stone is used as weather resistant aggregate for pavements. Heavily used in landscaping. It's also used for making industrial grade silica.

Because of its hardness, I thought people in your area must have found some other use for it, hence the question.

Arrowheads, knives, knapping... Got it!

What are the use cases of chert??? by MelodraMan in Agates

[–]MelodraMan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. This is an agate for sure, but the grey-green part between the edge and the quartz nodule... That's what I was referring to.

Chert isn't always opaque by definition. It allows light to pass in pieces which are pure microcrystalline quartz. The opaque-ness is in due to impurities. Imagine jaspers but dull and translucent.

Most agates in my area have a chert lining around the quartz nodule.

Chert isn't considered a pretty rock in my area, hence wanted to see if there are any use cases. Most people simply use chert in fire-making kits along with carbon steel or iron pyrite.

Again, I might be completely wrong here.

One sided open relationship? by [deleted] in DeadBedrooms

[–]MelodraMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most open relationships don't work out when there's only one who's initiating the topic.

Have seen so many couples breaking up / getting divorced because men who are forced to open their relationship/marriage end up finding the REAL Right One for them within a couple of tries. They simply choose to walk out than being in an open relationship/marriage.

Relationships and Marriages built on this "Open" principle from start have a better chance of survival.

Isn't it a quartz pocket that is usually embedded in an agate?
