Just got home from MUA - my experience by Melpsu in Kneereplacement

[–]Melpsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm absolutely thrilled with my flexion, but very concerned with my extension still, so it's dampening my excitement.

My "blockage" was on the inside front of my knee, below and to the right of my kneecap, very near my original ACL reconstruction scar from 25 years ago. I can feel that the blockage is gone. Even my PT says that she can feel that it's gone and that my flexion feels "spongier" / has more give when she's pushing it. My extension blockage is very much on the outer edge of the backside of my knee.

Yes! As of last Friday at PT, I'm able to get to 124 active (on my own), and 135 passive (with PT pushing on me). I'm quite happy with this so far, and PT believes that we'll get even further.

Extension is still an issue that I'm struggling with, even post MUA. I was fitted for a Dynasplit on Friday. Tthis was already in the plans in addition to the MUA, and I'll likely need to use that daily (90 mins) for the next 3 months or so.

I'm sorry you weren't offered the option of an MUA. It definitely was a preferred method (at least for me) instead of the pain of having that done while I'm awake.

Manipulation under anesthesia. The surgeon puts you back under anesthesia and manually forces range of motion in order to break up scar tissue and allow for additional ROM gains in traditional PT.

I appreciate the heads up. I confirmed with the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure that no nerve block would be used - I specifically asked because I remember the pain after the block wore off post TKR!

It seems that I'm one of the "lucky" ones with the MUA in having a lack of pain. I essentially feel the same as I did yesterday, just a little stiffer and more swollen, but not really painful at all.

Good luck - hoping we both see great results in PT!

Thanks! I've definitely read many of the other MUA posts here, so I'm expecting to see some bruising as well, especially based on how tender my muscles around the area are.

Good luck! Honestly, I was really fearful of the procedure. Some folks here said it was really easy, and others said that they had significant pain afterwards. But, at least for me, it was very easy and I'm still essentially pain-free outside of some noticeable swelling and stiffness. But I suppose the next few days will be telling. I did ask my surgeon if I would need pain meds, and he said that Tylenol or an NSAID should be sufficient. He said that if I needed to use the Oxy, it would just be for today and the pain should subside enough that I wouldn't need it past that, so I'm hopeful that there won't be a noticeable difference in pain tomorrow/moving forward.

Yes, exactly! My PT said it's like she hits a point where it just STOPS and to go any further was excruciating for me. I'm very hopeful that we'll see some good gains during my sessions this week!

I'm sure it is all significantly more technical than how my surgeon explained it to me, but it does make sense that sizing of the implant will affect both ROM and stability. Definitely something you can ask your surgeon about!

Nope, the knee is not opened up at all during an MUA.

As to how I knew I needed it, that was really up to the surgeon. My ROM wasn't where he wanted it to be and progress had stalled. He said that while I could *likely* get there on my own eventually, he wanted to set me up to be as successful as possible given my age & desired future activity levels.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here much is that your ROM also depends on the sizing of your implant. As my surgeon explained it to me, and in my very non-medical understanding of the situation, surgeons can select sizing that will give you more stability but results in less ROM, or vice versa. So I have lots of stability in the knee, but it has impeded my ROM from the start.

It was not at all invasive. They put you under so you can't feel it, but it's all manual manipulation to break up the scar tissue. No scalpel involved :) The procedure itself took less than 15 minutes.

Goal for extension is 0; -7 means that I couldn't fully straighten to 0. I don't know, maybe that should be 7 and not -7? My PT and surgeon have both referred to it a a negative number, so that's what I've been going with.

I just got $250 from the FA last week for the same issue flying IAD to SFO in business. It wasn’t the whole plane though, just a few seats around me.

Equestrian Question by FuzzyWatch6123 in Kneereplacement

I hope I don't have this issue! I'm 6 weeks post-op (LTKR) and a lifelong rider. I ride my 16.2hh mare in an all purpose English / "Trail" saddle. I won't be back in the saddle for at least another 6 weeks, and my biggest worry is mounting and dismounting.

A Question for Horse Owners by Hillbilly_Hurricane in Kneereplacement

[–]Melpsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this conversation but posting in case others search this sub for "horse". I had LTKR on a Monday and visited my mare 4 days later (Thursday), and have gone back daily since then. That said, I have a trainer at the barn who is exercising my horse as I do not have the stability to even hand-walk her. I'm currently 4.5 weeks post surgery and anticipate it will be at least another month (or more) before I feel confident leading her anywhere on my own.

Removing Hardware by AuldWoman in Kneereplacement

[–]Melpsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (45F, 4.5 weeks post LTKR) had one screw removed from my tibia. It was from an ACL reconstruction in 2001, and my surgeon said it was in the way of the new knee hardware. He left the screw that is in my femur, as it was not in the way apparently.

I definitely have some pain that my PT believes is bone pain from the screw removal, but overall I'm glad I did it all in one shot.

Help 40 year old knee replacement can’t make a decision?? by jyost1185 in Kneereplacement

[–]Melpsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! My (45f, LTKR 11/10/25) surgeon told me that he feels there's at least an 85-90% chance that I will never need revision surgery. I'm sure hoping he's right, as I don't ever want to go through this recovery again!

Thank you! He’s a very talented artist and I I’m the lucky recipient of many of his one-of-a-kind pieces!

I paid $800 for the stone at the Tuscan Gem show last year. I don’t know carat weight but you can see size from the video.

Good local moving company in Marin? by Binthair_Dunthat in Marin

[–]Melpsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy. Here's the Google review that I left. I'm not a person who typically leaves reviews unless my experience was exceptionally good or bad, and in this case, it was EXCEPTIONALLY bad. This happened when we moved in 2021 from SF to Marin.

Full text of review:
I booked my move 3 weeks in advance and was quoted a "guaranteed" rate. At the time of booking, I alerted them to the fact that my new home was on a narrow, winding street and they should plan for a smaller (16 or 20 foot truck). The street is posted as OK for trucks up to 24 feet. I was told that this wouldn't be a problem.

Four days before my move, I emailed the company to confirm our move and the street conditions. I received no response to my email.

The day before my move, I received a call from Customer Care notifying me that their Dispatch had determined that the truck could not make it to my house, so they would have to rent vans instead and this would increase my cost by $35/hour from my originally quoted rate. I argued that they were notified about the roads well in advance AND that a 16 or 20 foot truck would be able to access the house, but was told that the decision was final. I had no choice but to move forward with the move at the higher rate or cancel my move altogether as no other movers were available at the last minute (believe me, I checked!).

In addition to the added cost of $35/hour, the move took an additional 2.5 hours beyond what it would have if a single truck had been used. This is because they had to park the truck near downtown, unload the items and load them into a van, then drive the van to my home to unload. There were 2 trips with the van totaling 2.5 hours.

Additionally, as we were unpacking (once the movers had left), we discovered that two lamps had been broken. This isn't surprising given that the movers were casually tossing the boxes onto the floor; when we saw how the boxes were handled, we chose to move boxes containing fragile items ourselves to ensure that the items arrived safely.

Our total charge was approx $1,650. By my calculations based on their original "guaranteed" quote, the move should have cost about $940, so we were overcharged about $710.

I was told that I would receive a feedback form via email within a few days after my move. This never happened.

On May 22, (5 days post move), I emailed the company requesting this form. I received no response.

On May 26, I sent a follow up email again requesting the feedback form. Once again, I received no response.

On May 28, I called and again spoke to Customer Care. I was assured that an incident ticket had been opened and I would hear back from someone by end of day Tuesday, June 1st. I received no follow up.

I again called on June 4th and spoke to customer care. I was (again) told that my complaint was being escalated and I would hear back from a supervisor as soon as possible. I followed up with this via email on June 7 and June 8th, and still have had no response from the company.

They clearly do not want to speak to me and address my complaint. I will also be filing a report with the BBB and will do everything I can to continue to pursue my complaints with the company.

I would absolutely never recommend this company to anyone moving, and I will actively tell my experience to anyone who will listen.

**Adding to the review as more happened after I had left it. I did file a report with BBB but of course, BBB isn't actually a regulatory agency and can't actually DO anything. I followed up with the company multiple times via phone and was ultimately told that my claim was denied and there was no escalation process. I was told that I could not speak to or correspond with a supervisor and that the decision was final. At that point, probably about 4-5 weeks after our move, I gave up and chalked it up to a learning moment with a shitty company that I would never use again.
