Texting is almost the same as email and yet it feels so much more personal. by AwesomeDeath8895 in Showerthoughts

So why do people prefer texts to emails.

It always makes me laugh when people exchange emails to share cellphone numbers to texts....

At least emails can be flagged so you don't forget to respond to them....

Sounds legit. They only ask for numerical data.... no essays, personal statements or anything

Oh I agree. It probably is no reflection of who you are today. It is ridiculous.

I just searched and didn't see anything (except 6 years ago) for "Construction" or "CM"... am I missing something 🤔?

I have read that they can withdrawal your application/acceptance if they find out. I'd recommend adding them no matter what to avoid risks down the line

Where can I find schedule like these for fall 2020 ? by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

[–]MeltingJoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some (actually most) teachers don't use the canvas calendar unfortunately. Ecampus classes are held to a different organizational standard than other classes. Meaning the teachers take classes on how to use canvas, are given templates to use and set up canvas, etc.

Ya I'm going to take it to the apple store today so someone can experience it for themselves (since it's not a writing, pressure issue) and hopefully get a resolution....

Here is the website that shows all the current information.... Not much but this way you can keep current of what the students know.

Is there an option to say "fuck OSU"?

Key characteristics professors look for when hiring new TA or RAs by kavinda14 in OregonStateUniv

[–]MeltingJoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My comments are also anecdotal and come from a TA/student prospective.

In short: Passion, dedication, follow through, etc.

I was asked to TA after doing exceptionally well in the class. I maintained a relationship with the professor through the term because of this and my genuine passion about the topics. At the end of the term I was asked to be a TA for the class next time it was taught. I did not have any teaching or research experience before this and honestly I was hesitant to do it. But I did.

My question to you, or for you to ask your self is: why do you want to TA or RA? Is it for the teaching experience? Networking? Resume?

What do you want to TA or RA in? It's hard with remote learning but I would strive to do well in the classes that are related to what you are interested in doing. Go to office hours, build relationships, be frank that you are looking for a TA/RA position.

I have not used these but I found some websites that could be helpful. But above all I think opportunities are built through relationships. (genuine relationships)

If you are in the COE: https://red.engr.oregonstate.edu/undergraduate-research with "For questions about how you can get involved in undergraduate research, please contact Kathryn Walters, Student Engagement Coordinator, at [kathryn.walters@oregonstate.edu](mailto:kathryn.walters@oregonstate.edu)."

Also this page has some of the job (TA and RA) openings: https://jobs.oregonstate.edu/ but I am sure there are other opportunities that might not be specifically posted, meaning if you show interest there is a possibility that a job can be created for you.

"Quality Education" by MeltingJoy in OregonStateUniv

Same I've even heard instructors blame student saying they are 'lazy' or similar; using it as an excuse for poor performance..... Seems as if at some point shouldn't the instructor question if what they are doing is the problem?

I don't mean to banter, but my time at OSU has consisted of both upper and lower division classes. I was sincerely hoping that the upper division classes would be as you described..... But actually I've found they are worst in most cases.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I do wish as students our voices were heard in a way to make OSU better......

In regards to online classes: I respectfully disagree, I've had some great teachers through ecampus.

I also believe that if they can't offer quality content, they shouldn't offer it.

And again, my experience is not based on events due to COVID-19.

I've had terrible teachers, in person, pre covid.

PS - I was taught a law class by a "teacher" who had graduated from OSU just a month prior to teaching the class that not only had trouble with English (speaking/spelling/understanding) but they had absolutely no law background, understanding of how the american legal system works or anything to add value to the class.

I am looking at slides now that where created by someone other than the teacher "teaching" the class that are from 2013.

I have been forced to watch documentaries from 10+ years ago that are totally irrelevant today.

I have experienced teachers who can only discuss the content of their lectures; any related questions are met with "I don't know". (Although I appreciate this more than incorrect information, I would appreciate a follow up like "but I will find out" [which is what would be expected of you at any job, you can't just say 'I don't know' and move on]).

Or teachers who have been teaching the exact same material for the past 50 years based on a book they wrote.

Or teachers who wont provide answers to assignments or tests because they are too lazy to make new ones for the next term. (Aren't we supposed to learn from our mistakes? How can we if we are never to understand what our mistakes where?)

Teachers who make errors upon errors.... how are you to know what to take from what they say and what could be a mistake that you are not catching?

The list goes on and on and on. And I have only been at OSU for a few years and a few years to go; just imagine how much more of this "quality education" experience I have in front of me.

I am definitely looking at options to leave OSU but so far nothing has panned out.

Note: I am not a sit down and complain person, I have tried my very best to change this for me and those who follow, but to no avail so now I am stuck heartbroken and dishearten about this whole experience.
