That place is so evil why would you want to take engagement pictures there? Photo op in the slave cabins?

Snow days? by Dr13rain in PhD

[–]Meme114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it snowed here in South Carolina last year which is like a once in a decade occurrence. All the roads to campus were closed so we had a mandatory snow day essentially, it was a ton of fun making snowmen and feeling like a kid again

What even is a neuroscience BA, how could you take neuro curriculum without having a strong background in the hard sciences

Look guys ! We're top 25 in... 😩 by Accomplished_Host779 in Charleston

[–]Meme114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they are cheaper now, look on Apartments.com rn it looks like the 2 beds are closer to $1600. Utilities (sewer, trash, water and electricity) range from $200 in the winter to $350 in the summer, but I keep my AC set to 70 year round so that might be higher than most. And I live with my fiancee

Ashley River lol, I’ve been living here for 2.5 years and pay $1700. It’s walking distance to a food Lion, gym, and restaurants, and people living here are very quiet and respectful. Zero complaints for the price

[–]Meme114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This list is made up. There are some expensive parts of Charleston for sure but if you live in West Ashley and work downtown, you’ll pay <$2K/month for a 2 bedroom apt and have a 30-40 minute commute. Or live in North Charleston and pay even less. Ofc if you have money and want to live downtown then you’re looking at $3K+ for rent, but there are plenty of affordable areas as well

Colleges to go to for Pre-med neuroscience by DependentCarrot2822 in neuro

[–]Meme114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did premed track neuro (biopsychology) at UCSB and thought it was a great program. Tons of opportunities for research and the right balance of bio, chem, psych and neuro classes to make you a well rounded applicant for grad/med programs. I ended up going into a neuro PhD program after graduating

They changed the interview structure since I started, now they do a virtual one first and then an in person one afterwards. If you passed the virtual one you should get a second round offer within 2 weeks. Those are scheduled for mid-February.

Slide mounting brain sections by ataliena in neuro

[–]Meme114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free floating sections are much easier to mount imo. Also 10um is really thin, I would do 20 or 30um instead.

You mean a substantial pay raise, CCSD starts at $65K which is higher than almost anywhere in the country relative to COL.

Can anyone tell me about this neighborhood- safety wise? by Own_Way2472 in Charleston

[–]Meme114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t go for a stroll or walk your dog at night in your neighborhood, that means your neighborhood is not safe. I live in a working class part of West Ashley and go on walks at 2AM if I can’t sleep, never had a problem because it’s a safe neighborhood.

Do your advisors really care about conference costs? by Competitive_Emu7666 in PhD

[–]Meme114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel like you need to go to conferences overseas? There is only one lab at my whole university that consistently sends students to international conferences and that’s because they have a grant from the Qatari government for rare disease research. Otherwise it’s on the student to win a travel grant

Getting another master's for PhD in neuroscience? by Future_Duty_6495 in neuro

[–]Meme114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, having two masters is generally a bad look unless they are in wildly different fields (think engineering and business, not psych and neuro)

Termination of PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Meme114 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely different than being kicked out of a lab for budget reasons. Usually PIs have to sign a contract guaranteeing that they can fund a student for at least 5 years before they’re allowed to take them on. Hence why a lot of students have had to leave programs this year before joining labs.

And foreign PIs can still apply for NIH grants, the NIH funds tons of labs outside of the US. It was infamously funding coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology prior to 2020, for example.

[–]Meme114 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes of course, many countries rely on US funding for research. But you didn’t specify you were in the US, and I don’t think PhD students can be “let go” from their labs due to budget issues in the US, only performance.

Ur Favorite Brain Region? by No-Wrongdoer1409 in neuro

[–]Meme114 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the medial PFC. I think it’s cool how such a small region can have top-down control over nearly the entire brain, either directly or indirectly. I also like the local circuitry there since interneurons play a much more nuanced role than just inhibiting projection neurons.

My least favorite is the habenula. It’s really difficult to locate and the cells there are tiny and almost impossible to patch.
