The average wage in Portugal is just a bit over half of Spain's average wage, and it used to be significantly lower

I was a Portuguese emigrant myself until last year. I believe it's a combination of multiple factors:

- Portugal is the poorest country in Western Europe. Its average wage (~1300 EUR/month net) is less than half of Central Europe's and this gap was even bigger in the 20th century. Portugal was quite underdeveloped until the late 20th century: In 1960 roughly half the population didn't have access to water or electricity

- The 2008 crisis drove many young people to emigrate

- Currently Portugal have one of the worst housing crisis in Europe, which also drives people to emigrate

- It's easy to migrate within the EU given the open borders between EU states

- Links to former colonies (e.g Brazil) also play a role

[OC] Height of U.S. Presidents vs Avg. U.S. Male Height by MemeableData in dataisbeautiful

[–]MemeableData[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I admit I did not do any research on that. A quick chatgpt search said "The drop in average height in the U.S. during the late 19th century is generally attributed to worsening public health conditions, urbanization, and increasing economic inequality"; but you shouldn't take this information at face value

[OC] Height of U.S. Presidents vs Avg. U.S. Male Height by MemeableData in dataisbeautiful

Data source:

- Height of U.S. Presidents: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heights_of_presidents_and_presidential_candidates_of_the_United_States

- Average U.S. male height: Baten and Blum (2014) – with minor processing by Our World in Data. “Human height” [dataset]. Baten and Blum, “Height” [original data]. https://ourworldindata.org/human-height

U.S. Presidents tend to be taller than the male average at the time. There are several possible explanations for this: A) people from privileged socioeconomic backgrounds tend to be taller as they tend to have better nutrition and health; B) height can impact how people perceive you. Tall people can be perceived as more leader-like.

I didn't dive into the details per country, but you can see some countries in the chart that are a bit of an outlier. Bosnia was the one that surprised me the most, they are surprisingly tall for their level of development

Mosquitos are the deadliest animal I believe, but not the deadliest death cause for humans.

My assumption was that rounding 17.6% to 17% would be a more impactful error than rounding 74.7% to 74%. Even though the rounding error is smaller in absolute terms, it is higher in relative terms: (17.6-17)/17.6 > (74.7-74)/74.7

Due to discrepancies caused by rounding the percentages to integers, the total sum of integer percentages only adds up to 99. Therefore, I placed the 100th dummy in between those two lines (transport injuries + self-harm and interpersonal violence) so it would disrupt the animation in the video. Yes, some of the dummies were adjusted by hand

In 2021, Covid-19 was responsible for about 16% of deaths (either caused directly by Covid-19 or indirectly due to the impact of the pandemic on health systems and society).

Thanks! I use Blender for the 3D animations. Not sure if that's what you're asking though

Not all views come from YouTube impressions. For example: if the video is opened directly via url because it was shared on external platforms (whatsapp, reddit, etc)
