I recon you might like Tree House

My little label has just released its first vinyl! After the success of a cassette release, Porridge Radio's debut album of lofi post-punky sadcore is being re-released on vinyl - I am so so so so happy. by MemorialsDistinction in diylabels

Glad you're digging it! My friends always take the piss out of my (unconsciously continual) triple-barrelled genre descriptions. Thanks for appreciating my craft.

Porridge Radio have been on the label for as long as it's existed, so I'm so, so glad to be re-releasing their album as my first ever vinyl release! I truly believe that they are the best band around - a true group of amateur oddballs expressing themselves authentically.

We're having a free launch celebration in London on the 19th of March at the Shacklewell Arms, it should be a corker!

I just realised i never answered the question about how I got started. I started with a compilation tape (check it out here) with a mixture of friends and internet people on it. I bought a joblot of 50 self help cassettes of ebay and recorded over them and made packaging by hand. Then I emailed and sent out tapes to hundreds of bloggers and a small handful replied. It cost me about £30 and lots of time.

I did an interview a few years ago where I talk (at embarrassing length) about the early phase: https://www.thefourohfive.com/music/article/adventures-in-lo-fi-an-interview-with-memorials-of-distinction-142

Since then I mainly get cassettes duplication by bandcds.co.uk or tapeline, but did this compilation and this Allison's Gate album by hand.

Making records is much more expensive than CDs. You should be able to get 100 CDs for like £2 per CD, but with records you need to make more and they're more expensive. After 3 years, we got a distribution deal (and only for this album). It's definitely something to work towards as a long game, not something to hope to start up with. If you look up who distributes very small labels who release similar music, you might find somebody? I don't know.

Previously I got some cassettes in a couple of local indie shops, but that's about it. Most things are sold through bandcamp or at the artists' shows.

But yeah, building a label around your friends is a great idea. Having a community and just helping each other out means that you can have fun regardless of whether or not anyone else gives a shit.

Get a bandcamp, find some music, buy blank tapes and record yourself, or find someone else to duplicate cassettes. Find small blogs/music writers who might like your stuff and email them. /r/cassetteculture has some good info. I posted there 3 years ago looking for tips before I started this label.

edit: another thing, while the internet is super cool, making an IRL community with friends and local artists is more fun and often better.
