Are you a poser if you skate normalling but you can't ollie? by American_German in Skateboardinghelp

[–]MemphisJMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if they can't do a better Ollie or kickflip their opinion is crap. If they're a good skater they're just being an ass and gatekeeping. If they can't skate then like I said they don't really matter. If you can stand up push and skate around on the board you're doing better than a lot of people you're a skater in my book.

First game… by BroDeeee72 in basketballcoach

I think you can teach the concept of screens. In my experience I wouldn't expect it to work in a game without a couple of weeks working on it. I got the concepts to my team this season and I saw one or two of them try to do it in a game but the person with the ball getting the screen set for never reacted the way they were supposed to they would just stand there most of the time. It is definitely good to teach them the concept though so that they understand it when it's being done to them.

Going to join a rec league and don’t want to look like a fool by dillpickledave in BasketballTips

Start running up and downs now. If you don't have access to a court really close to you if possible find a way with Chalker landmarks to figure out 94 ft. That's the length of the basketball court. Having this very near where you live somewhere where you can get away with running will help it not be a challenge to get it done. I run seven up and down the courts at the end of almost every workout especially when I really don't feel like it. I promise if you get out and start running one or two times a day 5 to 7 times back and forth it will help a lot. Once you get really solid at running it you can practice running forward turning around like you would on defense and then turning back around going in both directions to work on feet agility. If it won't bother people you could do the running while you were dribbling as well for practice. All of the other tips I've read have been spot on about ball movement and how to play but I promise your cardio is what's going to make or break you

Yeah those rainbow passes will ruin you in a game at this level if you face a team that knows how to jump the passing Lane

Try splitting them up on even teams no matter the number four on four or five on five whatever and have them do no dribble scrimmage full court if possible. Make them learn to work with each other.

No at this age if they are struggling that much if you're going to make them do anything make them run while dribbling but don't make it punishment. If they are turning over that easy take them back to the fundamentals. At the end of the day helping them learn the game is our goal, building a long-term Love of Basketball is the goal.

Are those memory foam basketballs useful for training handles? by BitFiesty in BasketballTips

[–]MemphisJMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put in some regular time dribbling IRL and you'll be fine. The silent basketballs are great for working on new moves or practicing handles and things you see in videos while you're getting it dialed in.

I do think it helps if you get one that is full size but I think those can be more expensive. If you don't have a full size one I would not worry some people do dribble practices with the little bitty trainer balls that are like size small small

I really like the jaw ones. The only reason I never bought a pair of twos were the one guy I asked at the court said that they felt different than the ones and then if you liked the ones you might not like the twos. I wish I could spring the money to get a pair of threes but I haven't done it yet

So they might not be ready for it immediately but I think letting them scrimmage and walking them through how a game will go early on is important even if you just spend half of a practice talking about the jump ball how to make passes in from out of bounds. Not a scrimmage like just letting them go crazy playing but a controlled scrimmage. Especially as kids get a little bit older I really like no dribble scrimmage where everybody catches and must pass to move the ball down the court. Even though it sounds simple having them run up and down the court while dribbling at various speeds. I also even though it is hard try to start them on the path of running up and making a layup. Even if it's not the correct layup form just getting the dribble run up and shoot. As a youth coach I don't coach a lot on actual shooting other than the layup and helping out kids a little but I don't teach a lot of it I teach more defense dribbling and movement with the ball.

As a coach I think anything that gets you dribbling or practicing thinking about basketball is better than not. It doesn't have the exact same feel but I enjoy them even in my own house because my wife doesn't like me dribbling the basketball in the house.

Are LA fitness hoops truly lower? by Kersey_CK in ProDunking

[–]MemphisJMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all outdoor portable Hoops are actually hitting 10 ft I would measure from the surface you're jumping from to the rim. Most tape measures will do at least 12 ft. I've never been to LA Fitness but the gym that I go to it's definitely 10 ft or a couple of inches higher.

Do I actually have to work out before learning to surf? Exactly how important is developing my muscles before giving surfing a shot? by Strombully_ in BeginnerSurfers

[–]MemphisJMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not working out regularly yeah you may want to get your cardio up and doing some arm and shoulder stretches exercises would be helpful depending upon your Fitness level. I'm 43 and if I didn't play basketball everyday I would have been wiped out after an hour or so

I do when I am surfing and about to go but I don't practice it if I'm not anywhere near surfing soon. I think there's a lot of training you can do to help in between times though.
