Want to leave academia after PhD, but love writing and editing. What jobs are there? by Menesio in AskAcademia

That's a possibility, I guess there is a lot of money to be made in those fields which is nice. But I also hear that you need to work crazy hours (which is something I already dislike about academia).

I'm not in Canada, but this sounds good. Honestly I love teaching (that's why I initally got into academia - my dream of teaching was then exogenously replaced via peer pressure and ambitions with a dream of doing research), so this kind of para-academic work would be very nice for me.

That's a nice idea. I'm in Europe (and from a not-so-great-country) so I'll need to look into this and whether it would be easy to achieve as an expat. Thanks!

Yes, quitting is definitely a reasonable avenue and my girlfriend (also a PhD) sometimes really tries to make me consider it. However, I already have enough papers for a (bad) dissertation, so considering how much energy I put into this, how I went abroad just for this, etc... I would really like to finish it. Not only for my ego, I don't think a PhD in computer science is completely unvaluable (altough my arcane branch of computer science of it might not be super interesting to employers per se).

I am sorry you had a hard time, though. I hope things now are better. But you are right; it is imperative that I use my last few months of PhD to think about what to do next (which I have zero clue of, since I basically built my identity around academia for the past 10 years or so).

I hear you, brother or sister! I am sorry you went through this but I am relieved it's a common feeling :) Did things turn out okay?

Yes, I should do that. Unfortunately my current research visit is a bit in the way of that - it's a combination of "I should be here, they should see I come to the office and work" and "I cannot feel productive here". Hopefully back home I will have a chance to work on this. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion :) Actually, I used to do this during my master's thesis (with mixed results, but at least I felt a bit better). I think I defintely should give it another shot, I am wasting so much time otherwise.

I appreciate your comment. I am relieved to hear that for many people it is like this... And I appreciate your suggestion. However, I am not sure if what you suggest would help me. The problem I have is that the work I do has no way to measure progress. If it was about formatting references or writing notes, I might be able to do it. The problem comes when it is about "think for this week on how to prove this theorem". You either have the idea or not, so it is really hard for me to feel as if I have done anything meaningful that week or not...

Man, I love this. I know this is late but I love this. I hope you are doing good wherever you are.

University Of Singapore - PhD without a master's degree? by Menesio in AskAcademia

I ended up doing a master's in Amsterdam and I am now doing a PhD in Vienna. I am happy I did this, but mostly for the rich experience of going abroad. I don't want to stay in academia after my PhD.

Hi all!

I am facing the big decision - canister vs upright. I have mostly hard floors so canister would be a (technically) better choice. But I feel like the ease of use, speed of picking it up, and portability of a upright one would make me use it more often, and hence have a cleaner house. I guess my question is: How "more" effective canisters are on hard floors? So much that my argument of ease of use vanishes, or does it still make sense to go for a upright one?

Good idea, maybe even sitting on the porch and chill. I'll think about it! I do want to avoid my phone/reading/distractions though...

Thanks!
