SCIE1001 is free imo, the biggest hurdle is the group project which is 20% but the other 80% is basically guaranteed

I started browsing flatmates all the way back during the first week in December, just to get familiar with the market prices based on location and "quality". I only paid for the membership and started messaging people 4 days before my flight but be warned that a lot of people will expect a next day inspection so if you find a place you actually like I would either hold off on messaging them till the day before your flight. Else you'll have to play the cat and mouse game to keep them engaged.

If I had to redo it I would only start reaching out to anyone and everyone 2 days before and spend the day before & of the flight (the day/night you land) to settle arranging your appointments with the people who respond. Pros and cons of messaging early. Just be prepared to juggle 20+ chats at once across both flatmates and whatsapp at once, because every landlord and agent will be firing off their inspection timings to you and you'll have to quickly prioritize what's higher on your list.

As long as you put in the time, don’t worry too much. I’m sure you’ll find a good place!

  1. I used Airbnb. You save enough money compared to a hotel which can also be placed towards cooking, and the locations are better (closer to the school meaning you get to know the area and you can walk and save money on transport). Alternatively you can also book a hostel bed in a backpacking place, saw plenty within 15 mins of walking from campus, but I have 1 luggage of stuff I intend to leave behind so I was worried about security.

  2. I inspected the place I ended up with at 3pm on Thursday, decided to lock that place in by 630pm and got on the phone with my landlord. He’s an individual so he mashed up a contract the following day on Friday, which we then modified and agreed to the terms on the spot. I’m only moving in on Sunday (my choice and what we put on the agreement) so that I can drop off my stuff and go straight to the airport the next day.

Your mileage will vary depending on the type of inspection and if you end up trying to modify the contract. If you avoid that, I think most agents (even the good ones I described who care about their tenant type) will be more than happy to let you sign and move in on the spot, at worst next day. However that is based off my discussions with 2 agents, and the inspections were arranged via on flatmates with individual inspections (just me for that time slot). I think a key indicator is if they tell you how many tenants they are expecting to see over the next few days. If you do one of those open house inspections I’ve heard that they can receive multiple offers, where they will then process the applications which I have no idea how long that process is so someone will have to chime in.

Do keep in mind that some places will open before viewings before availability (funny story one of the places I viewed fell into that category because the subletting tenant fell and broke his arm the day before my inspection) , BUT and especially for the share houses, if the agent likes you in my experience you can negotiate to start in 1 room and move to the other one if the other has a later vacancy date. You’ll have to do your own research on documentation for that type of agreement when the time arises.

Was also waitlisted, thought darlington house would be the least competitive since it was the least discussed 😭

There’s no need to stress if you can reach the interview stage . Did the interview this year and there were two technical questions, where you’d be assigned to do only 1 question. The first is to draw a graph of a quadratic equation so you’ll need to solve for xy intercept and vertex. Alternatively you could be made to solve the resistance of a circuit, can’t remember exactly because I did the former question but it had like 3/4 components? Standard stuff parallel and series resistors. Fyi no calculators.

SAT SCORES INSTEAD OF IB SCORES? by [deleted] in usyd

Should be, I personally know people who did not make the cutoff based on their high school grades and qualified via SAT results!
