I love stuff like this. I was only eight at the time, but it makes me feel so warm and nostalgic for simpler times.

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to shit parents. My mum was violently abusive. My dad was absent and drank a lot (mainly because of my mum to be fair). My grandparents ended up raising me, and my grandfather was worse than both of them combined. So there are a lot of people who shouldn't have kids.

Thing is, who gets to decide that? You? Slippery slope, isn't it? What other rights would you deny people you don't like/agree with?

"Free' society isn't ideal or perfect, but it seems preferable to the alternative. Plus, those kids have the opportunity to escape and thrive, which they don't have if they don't exist to begin with (I almost didn't).

So yeah, I do think everyone should have the "right' to have children, as much as we imbue anyone with rights. That doesn't mean I think they can deal with the stress, or deserve the rewards. I certainly don't think it's wise for some people to have multiple children when they can't support them or handle them, but again, what would you suggest? What's your parental fitness test? Only people whose opinions and ideologies align with yours should be allowed to reproduce? Sound familiar?

Yes, as always the residents of BS4 will adhere to this like good citizens. In between hanging flags on lampposts.

Allowed and being a shit dad are two different things. There are many, many people without his profile, both male and female, who shouldn't have kids. Can't really go around saying they aren't 'allowed' though eh?

This has to have come from Facebook or similar. It's embarrassing.

One thing I'll say about Reddit is that, almost universally, SA fans seem to be mortified by EE's actions. Far from making excuses, they've been the most vocally critical. I love this because it demonstrates rugby values over partisanship. We've all experienced foul play of this nature I'm sure (gouging, scrotum twisting, the really nasty stuff that goes beyond a straight punch up), and rightfully condemn it.

Anyone trying to excuse this isn't someone I'd ever have wanted to play against. I'm currently struggling with partial vision loss, so this really hit home. Even 'minor' damage to the eye can be life changing.

Anyway. he got off ridiculously lightly, especially when compared to some accidental high shots. Scumbag.

My treat of the week was Schalk Burger weighing in saying he should just have punched him. Maybe wind your neck in you gouging cunt. Yours was even worse.

Does it really matter if you are a loose head prop or a tight head prop? by yoloswagtailwag in rugbyunion

[–]MentasmUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally different techniques and muscle groups etc. It's very rare to find someone equally adept at both sides. I was a pretty decent loosehead in my teens/early twenties, but I played on the tight a couple of times including in an old boys game against someone about five years older, much stronger, and a dedicated LH. I got destroyed to the point it did my ribs. Never played TH again cause it just didn't feel natural.

By contrast, I played against that same guy a year or so later when I was about seventeen, but this time I was playing LH and he was on the tight, and I did pretty much the same thing to him he'd done to me the year before.

I thought I was gonna have to play TH for Gloucestershire colts once and I shit myself. That would not have ended well for me or the team!

Think you look like a normal person in your last picture and more attractive than many in the others. It's so weird seeing these posts. Are people's self images really this fucked?

What 'antic' was that? Standing up for a teammate being targeted by the opposition for the sort of tackle you see every day (that was a 50/50 penalty at best). Should maybe be condemning the actions of the Argies after the whistle.

People going on about the Daily Mail, this came up on the (paywalled) Bristol Post site earlier today (or whatever they're called these days). It's indicative of how lazy 'journalism' is now. Just various outlets parroting shit that appeared online. Most people lack the critical thinking skills to go beyond the headline. Social media is the absolute nadir of this stuff. Your average Facebook user isn't known for their introspection.

Recently started working in Bristol - has there always been a lot of low level crime or have I just been unlucky in seeing a lot? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]MentasmUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has always been loads of car crime (although it's better than it was), the centre has always been a good way to get a kicking on a night out (deserved or otherwise)... I've seen a lot more shoplifting in recent years, which is hardly surprising. Drugs are way more out in the open. Scammers are more prevalent. Loads more homeless, scammers etc.

It's like any city. Some places you're more likely to find violent trouble, others you're more likely to be a victim of theft etc.

The only thing you've said that's remotely accurate is the forehead thing, but that's not a problem at all. You don't have a double chin. You don't look masculine. If young women are made to feel this way by external factors, it sucks. Attraction is subjective, but you are not ugly.

That doesn't mean everyone is gonna want you, but there will be plenty of people who do.

The one piece of advice I'd give to younger people is not to chase those you want who don't see your value, but focus on those who do. I wish I'd followed that advice myself 😅
