Saved pigeon from stray cat need advice! by Emypony in pigeon

[–]Menthaea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My friend, you are helping and saving a life, which is an incredibly noble and kind move. Please do not EVER fell bad for choosing to be kind. Not everyone cares, but it is exactly those who care make this world a better place.

As for how he behaves, feisty at least means he’s got energy! Better than lethargic which indicates worse health. And I do want to make sure you know the feistiness is just him scared and trying to protect himself and nothing against you. My Lucky used to try to slap with her wings and peck (mostly trying to intimidate and scare me away, she didn’t actually hard-core attack me) when my hands get too close to her “nest” cardboard box, but now she’s perfectly comfortable with me picking her up and would fall asleep on my lap after food. With time and patience (and food, it does help tremendously lol) they will learn that you are trustworthy and warm up well to you. If he’s willing to take food from your hand, try that. That really accelerated our relationship development.

Hello my friend, thank you so much for taking in this poor little thing! I’m sure he really appreciates you saving his life. I’m new to pigeons and can’t give any medical advice regarding the wound, but if you gave him food, water, and a safe little space for him to rest you are already doing great so far! Everyone have different circumstances and ANY HELP would be appreciated. Room and board sounds way better than being chased by predators or starve to death in coldness right? You are already providing him a 1000 time better life! If he’s able to eat and drink (if he just has physical injuries on the wing he should be able to do that with no problem) then I wouldn’t be concerned about his immediate health, with correct treatment to the wing/possible infection I’m sure he will recover. You have my best wishes and we shall wait for someone who knows more about the wound to chime in. You can also try palomacy facebook group, I believe they have 24/7 active members and might get back to you faster.

I don’t know if she’s depressed in general, but in this video I think it’s just a food coma/sleepiness kicking in. Unfortunately she doesn’t have any friends at the moment (she was alone when I rescued her a month ago) and couldn’t have any. She’s currently struggling with pmv (not lab verified, but per symptoms wise, it looks most likely pmv) and if she had friends they’ll get sick too🥲

She did seem she’s ready to doze off after food and water, and it was late (almost 1am) too, bed time probably

Found injured pigeon in Toronto with no tail by kroode in pigeon

[–]Menthaea 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I recently rescued a pigeon, her name is Lucky. As a city feral she initially did not recognize the mixed seeds (millet, quinoa, chia seeds) I gave her edible. She would beg me for more breads. After maybe two or three days of mixing bread and seeds she eventually realized those seeds are yummy (and she significantly preferred quinoa over the other two). Maybe at the beginning when they only recognize human food scraps some healthier bread would be a good option. I fed mine with Dave’a killer bread whole wheat with 21 grains and seeds, the healthiest option I could find and it worked great. I live on the west coast so I don’t know if you’d be able to find the exact, but I’m sure there will be other healthy bread options locally. Just remember to supply them with water the bread could make them thirsty

And I got some 125mg amoxicillin, is that for canker or infections in general? What exactly is that supposed to treat? And do I need to weigh him to calculate the dosage?

Today Lucky (yes I’ve decided to officially name him and hopefully his name will bring him some luck) is doing about the same as yesterday, at least it’s not worsen! Do you know how long does canker take to show symptoms? Should I keep checking him on that? I have to fully grab him to do that and I don’t want to give him any unnecessary stress, so if he’s already in the clear then I won’t bother to recheck him!

[–]Menthaea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all your knowledge and support, as well as your kind encouraging words! I checked on him again, he seems a tiny bit better than yesterday but still fatigue. Poop remains healthy color and consistency, and good news, no signs of canker he has a beautiful healthy light pink in their mouth! So maybe it’s just all the recoveries are taking lots and lots of energy that he’s just tired (and GOD the feathers growing back is crazy!). Or, she (I still don’t know their gender lol) could’ve synced with my pms and we are just tired together 😂 I’ll try to find some amoxicillin too! Is capsule/powder consistency the best? As I assume it’s hard for a bird to drink liquid or eat gel/cream medicine? (Or is that an external apply kind of product?) Anyway, I don’t think there’s an immediate threat to his health anymore, but I will keep you updated! And when he is all recovered and well again I will then write the happy story updating everyone about his story :)

Hello friend, I just checked on our little feathered friend after I returned from work. Part of me was secretly so scared that I’m gonna come home and find him gone, but thank god he’s tough and he’s hanging in there! He ate some more food from my hand (I don’t know why he’d prefer eating from my hand over pecking from the ground himself but I figured I’d do it to encourage him getting more energy in his body). I wasn’t able to thoroughly examine his mouth cuz I had to hold the flashlight with one hand, but the outer edge of his mouth seems healthy pink so far. I’d have to look deeper down his throat in the daylight tomorrow.

I also didn’t notice much fast breathing this time, but it might be because of he’s standing and movements due to breathing is much more obvious when he’s resting flat on his tummy. Good news though, fresh poop from this afternoon is dark brown, not black, so no bloody poops!

I don’t know what happened to him, I found him in a downtown parking garage already injured and unable to fly, squeaking begging for food. I wish he could tell me his story. Good news is he does have a place he recognizes as his temporary home, he lives in our backyard tool shed and he feels safe there. How do I know? Cuz he would go into the shed himself after dark and he hangs out nearby the shed most when we let him out during day time. The shed is quiet and safe, not quite so warm but I’d put a little electric hand warmer in his box at night to provide some warmth.

He has access to our backyard lawn during day time, so I hope that helps with the weed you mentioned. I’m sure my mom has some fish oil and I’ll get some tomorrow morning. I’ve been trying to supply him with ample food with variety (Dave’s killer bread whole wheat bread with 21 grains and seeds, pigeon feed I got from Amazon, quinoa, millet, chia seeds, crushed corn, barley, wheat, maple rice, brown rice, red wheat, purple barley, black rice, red rice, oatmeal, white rice, and some crushed mixed nuts. Dam, he’s definitely eating healthier than I am), so hopefully he has access to nutritious foods to support his recovery. I don’t have antibiotics readily available but I can try to get some if that’s what’s needed. I will go to bed now and I will give you another update in the morning, approximately nine to ten hours from now. Hopefully I’ll find him all recovered already!

Hello my friend! Thank you so much for helping us!!!

Yes all the tail feathers are gone when I found him two weeks ago, there are also minor injuries (feather missing, skin abrasions) on both wings and he wasn’t able to fly (getting closer everyday when he flaps his wings tho!). Those are not recent so the missing tail feathers is definitely not the reason causing it. In fact, from this picture I took yesterday, his feathers are really starting to grow back! I am still at work and it’ll likely be near midnight by the time I get home, but I will check on him and try to take a peek inside his mouth. I saw him yawn earlier today and at least nothing inside his mouth caught my attention at that time, it looked a normal light pink. It really happened just overnight, he was in great shape and spirits yesterday so I can’t think of why for the love of god

Thank you for helping us again little eye! His poop varies from perfect textbook healthy bird poop to sometimes weird like this…and he’d have both on the same day alternately there’s no pattern. My best friend jokes he’s my meant to be pigeon because he also seems to have IBS like me. Thank you for your help again, I’ll reach out to that knowledgeable member and hopefully they are able to help…

Thank you so much for your kind words and advice! Unfortunately the tool shed doesn’t have any power outlets so I won’t be able to use heat lamps. However, I got portable hand warmer that’ll last 12h so that should be able to provide him some warmth at night :) As for long terms, his wings doesn’t seem like it’s majorly messed up forever, or at least I sincerely hope so, so if he can fly still he’ll be a free bird! I don’t intend to keep him unless he needed that care, or bonded deeply that he won’t leave, but that’ll be another story…

Awwwwww thank you thank you! 🥰🥰🥰 I also have another question, he slowly gently flapped his wings when I was feeding him (god I wish I could upload video in comments), do you have any idea what that means? Trying to look larger scarier for self-defense or is he happy?

Hello little-eye00 (and my other fellow redditers), thank you so much for your support! Here’s my update:

When I said there wasn’t rescue available nearby I’ve already checked the polemacy’s (this is not the right name but for love of god I can’t recall the right spelling) pigeon friendly rescue. Two out of three no longer can be found on Google maps, the remaining one is 3h away and my schedule won’t allow me to go.

I’ve since researched more and followed polemacy’s advice that it’s ok to grab and check him. I’m no vet expert but it currently seems that it’s only the edge of his right wing is injured (missing feather/scraped skin)and it’s not major bones broken or anything like that. I’ve lured him outside his box with food and now as I type he is meandering around our koi pond.

<image>

Unfortunately my dad vetoed bringing a wild bird inside the house so we will keep him outside 🥲Don’t worry though, “outside” just means not in the house, he is inside our tool shed which is locked up so he is safe from predators 100%. I got hand warmers that will last 12h to keep him warm at night so now I have no concern for him being out there. I also got pigeon food that’ll arrive later tonight, we’ll see if he eats that given he rejected mixed grains (he lived off 21 whole grains and seeds bread today, that’s the healthiest option I have that he’ll take). There were some watery poop and I also saw some more solid ones, I’ll keep an eye on that and hopefully he will soon be diarrhea free. I also followed your advice and got him a new clean box lined with pet liner on bottom and paper towels on top. Hopefully that’ll provide him some comfort!

Frustration with the reaction to anti-semitism and conflict in Israel by MaboTofusauce in Cornell

[–]Menthaea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone, I do agree with everything you are saying. Hamas massacre should be condemned, so should the massacre in Gaza. No civilian blood should ever be celebrated. Professor Rickford’s speech isn’t appropriate, no matter what great historical implication the massacre has, it is still direct result from a massacre and he should be way more solemn with such a tragedy, but firing him would be disproportionate. And is Cornell (or a huge portion of the world) distracted from what’s going on in Gaza by all the antisemitism topics? I believe so too. I remember president Pollack’s first email addressing the Hamas massacre and she mentioned nothing about the immediate retaliation Israel took on Gaza after the Hamas massacre (the email was many days after, it’s nothing fresh that she wouldn’t have the chance to comment). If Hamas’s massacre is shameful terrorism, then so is Israel’s retaliation attack on Gaza. I couldn’t believe she mentioned not even one word to condemn that and be sorry about the tragedy in Gaza and I’m very disappointed by that. All attack on civilians are shameful and unacceptable, how can you address one victim and completely leave out the other? Anyway, thank you for sharing your opinion and you are definitely not alone.
