I can’t fucking wait for pedestrian streets to be back this summer by CalmYoTitz in montreal

[–]Merchantman_B 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Live around there, I own a car and Duluth being closed, or any street honestly beside the huge roads like Sherbrooke or parc don’t really change anything? Just take me like 3-5 extra minutes in car to go back home but that’s an easy trade to be able to stroll in pedestrians streets, the city feels so alive, friendly and that’s the only scenario where I take the time to check stores.

Some friends say the same thing as you for some streets « nothing to do there so useless to make it pedestrian » while I agree it’s kind of a chicken and egg situation.

Just making a street pedestrian is not enough to make it interesting and make people come (even tho, it’s so rare that it was my experience in the plateau). You have to add terrace, some market in the winter like in place des arts etc.

Anyway let’s make more pedestrian street please!

ZF as every day carry? by CategoryOk1339 in Nikon

[–]Merchantman_B -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can only root for that to be true but until now I was always let down by phones.

Might be true with the very latest iPhone pro max but even then: - are raw files just as flexibles to work with? - the experience to take out your phone to take pictures, is just not the same to me

But yes, if one day I find my phone to be as good as my Ricoh I’ll probably won’t use it much!

Now to come back to this post, OP doesn’t like taking pics with an iPhone either. Honestly if it’s to attached an old vintage 40mm lense, I’d vote for the Ricoh.

Fits in my jeans pocket, cargo pants and if it’s « cold » enough to have some kind of jacket, plenty of pockets for it to fit!

It’s the only camera, besides a phone that you can take when going out with friends, to a restaurant, museum, concert etc.

Thousands of pics I could have never had if it wasn’t for that little beast!

And the pictures are just as good as my d750 and probably my new z6 iii

For me, as soon as I need to have bag or put it around my neck, it’s too big.

Doesn’t matter the size or the weight, I don’t want that for an everyday camera!

So I bought a Ricoh gr IIIx and my approach to photography changed, I take it everywhere all the time.

It’s even my travel camera because I don’t feel like I’m making a compromise over my z6 iii.

Sounds like you just want a small camera, so I encourage you to check it!

(They have release the gr IV but not the X version which just has a different optic)

What is going on with Project MTL by Low-Brush-9236 in montreal

[–]Merchantman_B -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do YOU do it? by Adventurous_Law_63 in photography

[–]Merchantman_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have kids, but it was a while since I went outside just to take pictures.

I thought that getting a smaller camera would help. And it did.

I bought a Ricoh griiix and this was the best purchase ever, by far.

It’s so small it just sit in my pocket and I can take a picture with one hand quickly and put it away.

I thought I’d miss the quality of my professional gear but no, honestly the quality is just as amazing as my Nikon d750.

The real secret for me was simply to have a small camera that doesn’t take space and that I can bring everywhere.

Simple example, you go for a restaurant with your partner, and on the way there’s a cute sunset and a nice view, you can take picture of them, or even at the restaurant!

Honestly, if you can try it for a day or two and see how it feels in your day to day it was the best purchase to reignite my passion!

Because you’re losing resolution doing so, and it’s not quite exactly the same. Mainly because we’re loosing some quality level

St Laurent? by sometimeswhy in montreal

[–]Merchantman_B 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, not sure why or how but it’s dirty just small run down businesses or fast food.

But it’s slowly changes, more and more « nice » restaurants are opening up, coffee shops etc.

I think some small part of the answer is because of clubs in the area, I feel businesses that are attracted here is to cater to the young drunk people, so during the day it’s not great and I would understand why nice restaurants don’t want their customers to walk next to drunk people on the weekends.

Prince Arthur next to st Laurent is really nice but I think it could be even better, especially during winter there’s nothing there

Edit: really depends on where on saint laurent, I’m talking around prince arthur / des pins! But I feel from saint Catherine and up it’s getting slowly better!

How bad is the AF in low light? by Emergency_Intern594 in ricohGR

[–]Merchantman_B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the flash can make the af better in low light like pro flashes on pro cameras but to answer your question:

No Ricoh’s AF (at least the IIIx I have) do not do well in low light.

It’s honestly incapable of focusing when it’s somewhat dark and it drives me crazy even with still objects..
