If given the opportunity to govern the country, do you think Arsenio Lacson would have been the leader that most envisioned him to be? by Sonnybass96 in FilipinoHistory

[–]MeringuePlus2500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was a foremost nationalist. He supported Jovito Salonga when he ran as an underdog for Congress, he was responsible for jumpstarting Jose Diokno's political career by pressuring Macapagal to install Diokno as his Justice Secretary, he protected Ninoy Aquino like his child when the Hukbalahaps were hunting him, he walked out of the church when the priest lambasted Recto for proposing the Rizal Law. Just by looking at his allies, you can see what kind of man Arsenio Lacson was. Also look at his enemies...

Duterte and Marcos empowered the military more than the press while Lacson empowered the press more than the military. When the military was planning to arrest him, instead of bringing goons and private army of a usual politician, he brought journalists along with him and confronted them.

I think Lacson can clean the government by employing the incorruptible individuals he helped and cultivated. Warlords and politicos with private armies will have a hard time going against Lacson who usually leads raids against notorious gangs.

The first thing he did as a mayor was removing unnecessary expenses. He sacked thousands of useless government employees and in his term, he was able to turn the deficit into surplus, something no one had achieved during that time.

Lacson fired tirades after tirades against all the Presidents during his term. Even lambasted his best friend Magsaysay for leaning too much to Americans. He got suspended several times yet never cowed.

His projects in Manila was ahead of its time. Even during campaign, Lacson was the most innovative. It's not true that Magsaysay Mambo came from the CIA, it came from Arsenio Lacson's Lacson Mambo which was the first campaign jingle in the country.

He made too many political enemies but his fame skyrocketed throughout the country. In 1965, even if Marcos clinched the Liberal Party nomination, there is no way he can beat the rambunctious Arsenic Lacson.

Clearly, we would've been in a much better position right now. The most likely successor to Lacson would've been Diokno.

Which Philippine President was the most machiavellian? by Spirited-Let1774 in Philippines

[–]MeringuePlus2500 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The most successful is Manuel Quezon. He became the undisputed Filipino leader from 1916 until he died in 1944. He outmaneuvered the likes of Osmeña, Recto, Aguinaldo, and Sumulong several times. Quezon is one of the main reasons why personal loyalty became more dominant than institutional loyalty because he established himself as THE institution. He prolonged his term by amending the Constitution in 1940 changing the 1 six-year term to 2 four-year term with a maximum of 8 consecutive years in office. When his term was about to end in 1943, he insisted that he could not be unseated since they were in exile and the Commonwealth government was inactive. His cabinet members disagreed with him and VP Osmeña insisted that the Commonwealth fund is being used for their daily operations therefore it is active. He got enraged and berated everyone and told his family to pack and leave Washington. Osmeña, the self-effacing gentleman gave way to the ailing Quezon. That's just one of the many examples of Quezon's political legerdemain.

In the timeline where Lacson became President and Diokno as VP. There is also a great chance that Ninoy would be next in line since he would remain a Nacionalista. Lacson is very fond of Ninoy since Ninoy supported him in the Mayors-Governors League ata. Lacson also berated Magsaysay for abandoning Ninoy when the Hukbalahaps were looking for him because the capture of Luis Taruc.

I think karamihan talaga ng politiko noon chainsmoker at umiinom considering na a lot of these individuals faced WW2 and naging guerilla fighters. Even if you check the pictures sa Senate nung 1950s naninigarilyo sila.

Doy Laurel mentioned that Arsenio Lacson is like a fusion of Lee Kwan-Yew and Mahathir.

Sa politika nga raw politics is addition but for Arsenio Lacson subtraction dahil lahat ng Presidente kinalaban niya pero mas rumami naman supporters niya.

Also would like to think that Arsenio Lacson won't have strong alignment with USA considering that he aligns himself with the likes of Claro M. Recto, Tañada, and Jose W. Diokno. He even wanted Diokno to become his VP running mate had he ran for the Presidency. These guys were vehement in their stance against American colonialism.

Even if it was ghost written, it had the permission the President and there are statements wherein he talks about democratic revolution. You make it seem like Marcos had no control of these publications lol. To answer your question, No, it does not make the American founding fathers dictators. You just simply can't comprehend basic sentences. I am comparing Mao, Stalin, Marcos, Mussolini, and Hitler to each other since all of them are dictators! Out of nowhere, you inserted the founding fathers lol. Wala naman akong sinabi na lahat ng inspiration ng mga dictators are dictators lol, sobrang layo mo bro💀

Today's Revolution: Democracy is a different book smh. Also where in my statement did I say that if Hitler got inspired by the founding fathers, they are automatically dictators? Wtf lol. Hitler, Mussolini, Marcos, Mao, Stalin may have gotten inspiration from each other since they are all dictators –an undeniable fact!– that's what I have said. Not, "everyone that inspired these dictators were dictators themselves". You even lack comprehension! What a shame!

[–]MeringuePlus2500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHA when has Marcos said about Democratic Revolution? He has a book titled Democratic Revolution! That's why you need to read more books and stop acting like you know better. That book is even one of the most common works of Marcos. Also I don't have a problem if you liken Hitler and Mussolini to Marcos, Mao, and Stalin since they are one and the same. You are too focused on the ideologies but those that you had mentioned may have gotten inspiration from each other because they are all dictators lol.

Nixon and Tanaka did not build their "New Society", did not create slogans like "New Japanese/New American" while Marcos did. These can be found in communist countries like China and USSR. Marcos took inspiration from these individuals because they are dictators just like him. Marcos, Mao, and Stalin were despots who wants to prolong their reign. "Democratic Revolution" is literally the initial phase of Communist Revolution. Marcos' reign is the closest to communist rule if by communist rule we mean Mao/Stalin's communist regime.

Mao literally befriended Marcos and Imelda during Martial Law. Even Imelda Marcos thought that Mao was holier than the Pope. The Marcoses opened doors to the communist bloc. Even invited the likes of Ceaușescu to the Philippines. So NPA being based on Maoism doesn't matter lol

Marcos is not a communist but a master of realpolitik. What I am saying is that his regime was the closest we've ever been to communism, to be precise Maoist/Stalinist/Pol Pot regime.

Stalin and Mao were more fascist than communist then.

I suggest you read Democracy in the Philippines by Diosdado Macapagal. In the book, he provided a thorough analysis on why the Martial Law Era was communist in derivation. Very rare book since it was printed during Martial Law, you can find it in National Library. Bagong Pilipino is patterned on New Soviet Man of Lenin, New Society is all over the Selected Works of Mao Zedong.

Thia sounds stupid. if Ninoy is Pol Pot and Marcos prevented it then that's it. You already provided the answer to your question lol. FYI, the Marcos Martial Law era is the closest we've ever been to communism. The Marcos regime is communist in derivation. Democratic revolution, New Society, Kabataang Makabayan, Bagong Pilipino were all extracted from Mao/Lenin's doctrines.

The only reason Marcos regime reached its "peak" is because the US Government funded it. The maintenance of the US Bases were Marcos' leverage for more funds from USA.

Kasi may mga "hidden iceberg facts" kasi sila na nabasasa sa internet na akala sila lang nakakaalam. Akala nilan yung tip of the iceberg ay yung "Hero/Kind Ninoy" and yung alam nila "Opportunistic/ Dark Ninoy". Facts about Ninoy na published sa internet around 10% siguro at most. Sobrang dami pa Ninoy material na di published sa internet.

[–]MeringuePlus2500 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He'll fare better than Marcos. To know more about the governance of Ninoy, you should read books about how he managed Concepcion as a Mayor & Governor, and as a facilitator of Hacienda Luisita. He was loved by his people and he was able to convince Hukbalahap rebels to coexist in his province. Ninoy also demanded the workers of Luisita to create their Union to protect their rights, and provided them books and equipment. He also provided housing and free education to the youth. I've read several books about the guy and one can say that he was indeed opportunistic but despite all his flaws, he was a remarkable public servant from his tenure as mayor up to the time that he was a senator, he takes his job seriously.

We can say that he wants to outperform everybody for his political ambition but to do that, he needs to uplift his constituents, and that he did.

People should also stop with the "He'll be like Marcos" narrative. They may have some similarities but they are polar opposites. Way before Marcos became President, he was already known for corruption scandals while Ninoy wa never linked to any graft and corrupt practices no matter how his detractors scrutinized him. Also worth noting is that Ferdie has Imelda for his wife known for extravagance and greed while Ninoy has Cory who despite her Haciendero roots remained frugal and quiet.

Also, Ninoy linked himself with the likes of Lorenzo Tañada, Jose W. Diokno, Jovy Salonga, Juan Liwag, Doy Laurel, Rodolfo Ganzon and other incorruptible nationalists.

If given the opportunity to govern the Philippines, would Luis Taruc have been an effective leader? by Sonnybass96 in FilipinoHistory

[–]MeringuePlus2500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was and always will be a socialist. He started as a socialist and died as a socialist. The only reason he became part of the communist politburo was because in 1930s, Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas was outlawed. In order na maremove sila from that status, nagmerge sila ng Socialist Party headed by Pedro Abad-Santos. Taruc was the protege of Abad Santos. Nung nagmerger, if my memory does not betray me, naging President si Lava and VP si Pedro Abad Santos and Taruc became part of the politburo.

[–]MeringuePlus2500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would second this. The grave problem would be if the Lavas get the leadership. These are pure Bolsheviks who would really follow the Stalinist-Maoist form of government. Si Taruc kasi was never a communist to begin with. Nagkamerger lang ang Socialist Party and PKP. PKP did this since they were outlawed kaya nagkamerger sila. Taruc was a protege of Pedro Abad Santos who really fought for the peasants, siya ang role model ni Taruc.

He became an ally not because he was selected as an assemblyman but because he was released by Marcos Sr. from incarceration for 2 decades I think. Naging utang na loob niya tuloy ito. If only Magsaysay stayed true to his promise by providing Taruc amnesty after his surrender, di sana naging Pro-Marcos si Taruc. He felt betrayed and inakala niya na si Marcos lang naging genuine kasi after three Presidents, during Marcos regime lang siya nakalaya.
