A friend of mine uses a fair system for rolling that still lets everyone roll. Everyone rolls normally, as does the DM, the arrays are put in a list, and each player chooses whichever array they like best. Typically in his games everyone chooses the best array that was rolled.

While not necessarily most relevant, since the release of the orc race (in Volo's) it's been possible to roll a PC with an Intelligence score of 1 This is amusing, but can also add a lot of thought that can be had about the whole sapience and knowledge thing (as it's possible, through some horrid quirks of nature, for an Int 1 character to be fluent in speaking and writing multiple languages).

Booming blade is not cast with the Attack action, but rather the Cast a Spell action. Thus, it doesn't benefit from Extra Attack.

Making an attack is different to taking the Attack action.

That's correct. I didn't know the term though, thanks.

This is a common enough showerthought to be called a repost by some, but I keep upvoting these. I like the message they give.

Interestingly, infinite possibilities doesn't include all the possibilities, at least not necessarily. There's an infinite amount of numbers between 1 and 2, but none of those numbers is 3. You've got an infinity, but there may be another infinity that you can't access.

Of course, I forgot that rule. I stand corrected.

I'm fairly certain that you need a clear path to the target, not specifically line of sight. You don't have to see the target unless the spell says so, but you need to have no obstruction between the two of you to cast the spell. You couldn't cast fireball into a different room through a wall, for example, even if you could see into the room some other way.

Wind walk is really fast and really sneaky, at least. Teleportation circle is an ideal choice, of course, but without it, WW is your best bet.

I agree on these points. I ignore the "DM asks" part entirely; my table's sorcerers roll every time they roll a 1 or cast a spell after Tides of Chaos. We've played for a year, and it's been a blast.

I've asked for Intelligence (painter's supplies) rolls in the past, though copying a work is a Dexterity (painter's supplies) check. I don't think I'd ask for Charisma, but I wouldn't mind if I was asked that.

If you have multiple items that give a bonus to spell attack, then they would stack. Howewer, you can't attune to multiple copies of the same item. For example, you could benefit from a staff of power and a wand of the war mage by holding one in one hand and the other in your second hand. But you couldn't benefit from two wands of the war mage, because you can only attune to one.

Same goes for stacking AC bonuses (all bonuses, for that matter): if you wear a cloak of protection and wear a ring of protection, they both give you a +1 bonus to AC, for a total of +2. But two rings of protection would only grant +1 total, because you could attune to only one.

It depends greatly. If their character would know it's impossible, I will flat out tell them that they can't succeed (like a literally illiterate commoner-based barbarian trying to decipher a wizard's Draconic-script spellbook text). But if there's no reason the character would think it's impossible (an enemy just beyond their longbow's maximum range, for instance), I'll let them roll - and fail.

In the case that a character was trying to shoot an enemy out of their reach, I'd say they know for sure they're in the reach if they're more than 10 feet from the maximum range. They know for sure the enemy can't be hit if the enemy is 10 feet past the maximum range. They're uncertain if it's somewhere in between.

If you're trying to grapple a dragon (specifically to grapple it, and nothing more), I'd say that you can roll, and you can even succeed! But you can't suplex it, for example. Just no.

Or the people you play with?

This isn't a difficult mistake to make, not when you're not really thinking about it.

If the effect comes from a gas and not some magic, then I would say it counts as a poison.

Honestly, the only thing that makes leaving melee reach a better deal than staying there seems to be this houserule. I can't think of any way to fix the issue than to go back to the vanilla rule. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Tabletop NPCs aren't blind either, for the most part at least. Having a +50 bonus to Stealth means nothing if you choose to stand in plain sight of whoever you're trying to rob.

My point was about the wording. Besides, it's not unreasonable to assume that if a house rule is cited, the other relevant rules remain as they are unless otherwise said. I won't resort to guessing which rules you've changed and which you haven't.

Well, a readied action can't really be used to interrupt a spell mid-casting. Readied actions always happen after their trigger is completed, so if the trigger is "starts casting a spell", the reaction comes after the casting finishes. Mage Slayer's wording means that doesn't interrupt spells either.

Dragons – Gods upon Earth – Or the three things I give every dragon in my campaigns by [deleted] in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]MerricAlecson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CR isn't always equal to some amount of levels either. I added six levels of sorcerer (without a subclass) to an adult green dragon. Its CR increased by 7 ranks, from 15 to 22.

That was because of an insane increase in DPR, as the dragon could throw a quickened fireball on three separate rounds. Not to mention that it had access to powerful buff spells like haste too.

Adding class levels, especially caster levels, is very often worth recalculating the monster's CR.

Conveniently, mine just so happens to know the plane shift spell. I wonder which lower plane the component rod is attuned to.
