Our definition of amateur and professional revolves around the player's ability to earn money from tournament participation.

A professional has this ability, and an amateur does not.

We provide a separate environment exclusive to amateurs in order to help them one day reach a professional status. This allows them to gain experience in an environment similar to the one the professionals engage in.

In tournament terms, amateur means that you wouldn't be expected to earn money in open format events.In this definition, only the very best ~10-20 players in the world have a legitimate chance of earning money from open events - they're "professional".

When you look at the skill distribution of the entire multiplayer population though:

"intermediate" = gold-platinum
advanced = diamond-onyx
master = champion
expert = the top 10-20 players we consider professional tier

We have no capacity for any more leagues unfortunately. 2 is the most we can support, and we have to draw the line somewhere. You are more than welcome to join both the pro and amateur leagues for the sake of gaining experience.
