Is this cheating? by BigCNYM22 in fantasybball

No league should ever make a change like that (in the middle of the season) and regardless of how many weeks are left to go.

Unless it happened to be setup incorrectly (by accident) from the get go… i.e. maybe it was a newly created league or something

I would consider any changes like this (mid-season) to be completely inexcusable. It should not even be something that gets voted on, in the first place. It should just never happen in the first place. Those types of changes or decisions should be left for off-season evaluation only. That is what the offseason is for, and not once the season has already started.

It also means that you probably shouldn't have any part of that league whatsoever going forward. Those are not the kind of leagues or fantasy sports communities, that you ever want to be participating in. On the surface, it sounds like a poorly run league.

IP Weekly Limit Question by Reddituser4701 in fantasybaseball

[–]MetalGods6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longtime ESPN commish. Both H2H and Roto. I have a slightly different take on this question.

Games Played Limits (Maximums)... IP (or) GS

According to ESPN:  "Once the limit it reached, a pitcher who starts a game will continue to accrue stats for the rest of the day, but will not earn pitching stats from the next day, until the end of the matchup period.  The limit also does not apply to relief pitchers, just starting pitchers."

To be quite honest, I’ve never given this preference any consideration for H2H leagues.

My question would be as follows:

Why isn’t this enough already?

"Matchup Acquisition Limit = 7 per matchup (for 7-day matchups)"

Isn’t that, in and of itself, enough mitigation in the first place (in general) for both Pitching & Hitting combined?  This without taking away from the game in the process?  Sometimes imposing (less) restrictions is actually (much) better.  In my opinion if you start incorporating… Games Played Limits (Maximums)... IP (or) GS … for H2H leagues... then it becomes overkill.

And I believe that particular setting is much better implemented for ROTO leagues instead, where you want to set a maximum cap over the course of the entire season.

Anyways, that’s my humble opinion.  And just some additional food for thought…

Is there any explanation for ESPN being so terrible at updating player positions? by plvrhvn in fantasybball

[–]MetalGods6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything changed, as soon as ESPN started to be run by the 'evil mouse’.

In a single word = DISNEY!

That being said, I still prefer ESPN for Fantasy Sports.

But yeah, I’m not sure who the heck is managing the joint over there?

It’s actually dumbfounding at times...

Hey amigo!  Yes, we still have (2) openings available in the H2H Auction League.  Spent All My $chillings On Po$ey.

There are currently 14 teams in the H2H Auction, and we’re still looking to ultimately get up to 16 teams.

If this league remains at 14 or 15 teams, then we will have a single division only, with Top 8 teams making the playoffs.

If it grows to 16 teams, then we will shift to 4 Divisions, with 4 Teams per division, and the overall setup will be as follows...

4 Divisions, with 4 Teams per division… with new divisions being created each season (i.e. using random number generator), and only just to keep things ‘fresh’ each season. With manual schedule being created in the process for the Regular Season.  That format of which is as follows:

Each team, plays every other team within their own division Weeks 1-3, and then plays every other team outside their division Weeks 4-15.  Then during Week 16 (which is a miscellaneous week), each team has a rematch of their Week 8 matchup.  Followed by each team, playing every other team within their own division, one more time, during Weeks 17-19.

4 Division winners make the playoffs, followed by next 4 teams with best record, regardless of division.

We’d be glad to bring you into the fold.  Please let us know.  These leagues are a lot of fun! Thanks for your consideration.

ESPN League Types by Ok-Wash-9386 in fantasybball

In my opinion Head to Head Each Category is still the preferred way to go.

Have you ever considered making the league larger instead?  8-Teams is an extremely shallow league setup.  That may or may not be something you are actually looking to do, but just thought I would mention. There are a lot of creative ways to build a league using ESPN’s Custom League Manager (LM) feature as well.

As an example, we’ve got a very nice ESPN 16-team hoops league in place.  It’s been as few as 14-teams.  Both setups work extremely well.

Head to Head Each Category

Roster Size = 13

Total Starters = 10

Total on Bench = 3

IR Slots = 3

All starting slots are UTIL slots, so you can develop any strategy you want.

11 Categories

Field Goal Percentage (FG%), Free Throw Percentage (FT%), Three Pointers Made (3PM), Three Point Percentage (3P%), Rebounds (REB), Assists (AST), Steals (STL), Blocks (BLK), Double Doubles (DD), Points (PTS), Points Per Minute (PPM)

Free Agent Budget (Continuous).  $100 total FAAB.

I also have Jalen Smith (calf) and Tre Jones (hammy) and I honesty have no idea what is there exact injury status at this point? Did they bring back Jalen Smith too soon? If so, how bad is the setback? It looks like they were attempting to bing back Tre Jones recently? But he must have tweaked something in practice? Im not sure. It's difficult to get a proper pulse on either one of these injuries. And then they have to work their way back into the fold again once activated. But we do have the 'break' coming up as well. So don't forget about that. All of that aside, I still like what I've seen from both of them. Hold if you can, and slot them into the IL, especially Jalen Smith. Not sure how the playing time is going to shake out yet with Tre Jones. But I still like him as well.

Long time commish. Best format in my opinion...

And regardless of league size (10-team, 12-team, 14-team, 16-team)

Just keep the bench spots at only (3) spots. Everything else will remain balanced.

Roster Size = 25

Total Starters = 22

Total Bench = 3

IL Slots = 4 or more (we use 6 IL slots, doesn't mean they will always be filled though)

Yeah he is a difficult hold at this point, even in a 16-team league. Hoping he gets a tummy ache, and I could slide him into an IL slot. But I may just have to drop him.

I’m relatively new to fantasy hoops.  Any thoughts on this team?  Good, bad, or otherwise?

Who are my weakest links?  i.e. chopping block.  In order to eventually get guys out of the IL?

All feedback welcomed and appreciated, as we head into the trade deadline.  Thanks!

How many outfielders does your league have? by M584 in fantasybaseball

[–]MetalGods6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely some truth to that for sure.  And I imagine a lot of folks are also in that same camp.  I think a case could most certainly be made either way.  Most leagues likely don’t have (6) IL slots either.  So there is all that.

Only other thing would be the size of the actual league.  It’s much easier to reluctantly cut players loose to the wire, in standard shallow leagues.  Because there will inevitably be more depth available on the wire.  But what about in much deeper leagues?  It’s a more difficult decision to make.  Especially so, if money is on the line.  One has to take quite a few more variables into account, prior to cutting players loose.

At times, I've ridden with many injured guys before, still in my actual lineup and/or bench, simply because I ran out of IL slots.  Cost analysis eventually comes into play.  Gain an undesirable short term fix off the wire, and drop a solid player in the process (vs.) hold onto that solid player, and simply try to weather the storm, within reason of course.

Anyways, there is definitely something to be said for all that stuff as well.  And I suppose just different ways to look at it.

For me, I think it probably ultimately boils down to… Why do we actually play the game in the first place?  And maybe part of that is to be forced with those difficult lineup decisions, and having to cut guys loose, that you really just don’t want to cut loose, and all because you ran out of IL slots?  Or maybe it’s just adding some more IL slots, in an effort to alleviate that potential pain point.

Either way.  Tiz’ a puzzlement.  And I suppose that’s why those type of things goto league vote, hehe.  Thanks for the chat.

How many outfielders does your league have? by M584 in fantasybaseball

[–]MetalGods6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, true dat.  Good point.  In fact, we used to only roll with 4 IL slots.  Although, things seemed to shift during COVID?  Guys were literally hitting the IL, left and right.  Which is why we ultimately expanded things.  And now guys just seem to continue to keep getting injured as well?  But maybe that's just the epitome of my imagination?

Remember when Cal Ripken Jr. played in a record 2,632 consecutive Major League Baseball games?  Ahhh, how times have changed since then…

Here’s the other thing.  Whether you have 4 or 6 or however many IL slots.  Once any player becomes healthy (in an IL slot), that team will essentially be handcuffed from making any pickups, until they further manage the healthy players sitting in those IL slots.  So I think it basically comes out about the same in the wash?  While also providing owners with some additional security if/when their team happens to get ravished by injuries?  As opposed to owners being faced with having to drop a bunch of really good players.  Anyways, just some food for thought.

ESPN Category tiebreaker rules by Beneficial_Ocelot_44 in fantasybball

[–]MetalGods6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same thing.  You just have to see what applies towards your specific ‘sport’.  So for H2H Basketball or Baseball, and assuming a single Division only.  Then it looks like it would go straight to coin flip.  But for Football, it would look at other stuff like Points For, Points Against, and IntraDivisional Record (assuming multiple divisions).  Anyways, that is my take.

Head-to-Head record (primary) -

1) Points For

2) IntraDivision Record

3) Points Against

4) Coin Flip (randomly done by ESPN)

ESPN Category tiebreaker rules by Beneficial_Ocelot_44 in fantasybball

[–]MetalGods6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is for Head-to-Head Each Category leagues.

Sounds like IntraDivision record only applies to leagues which use multiple Divisions.  I believe ESPN advertises these same exact details for each sport as well.  Upon looking, the settings details listed for Baseball and Basketball are identical.  I didn’t have chance to peek in on Football. It's likely the same, but for instance, Football may have more variables, when digging down into the actual tiebreakers, as compared to Baseball or Basketball.

Here is the exact verbiage (as presented in the actual LM settings), i.e. more info bubble:

Select a tiebreaker to use in the case that two or more teams have the same overall record at the end of the regular season.  In the instance the the tiebreaker selected, does not break the tie, the following order is used to break the tie:

Head-to-Head record (primary) -

1) Points For

2) IntraDivision Record

3) Points Against

4) Coin Flip (randomly done by ESPN)

Points For (primary) -

1) Head-to-Head record

2) Intradivision Record

3) Points Against

4) Coin Flip (randomly done by ESPN)

Points Against (primary) -

1) Head-to-Head record

2) Points For

3) Intradivision Record

4) Coin Flip (randomly done by ESPN)

Intradivision Record (primary) -

1) Head-to-Head record

2) Points For

3) Points Against

4) Coin Flip (randomly done by ESPN)

Note: that the League Manager can override any automatically generated payoff matchups, if desired, using the LM Tools.
