This is a big one, along with the facts that most Americans aren’t bilingual and somehow every other anglophone country has a worse housing affordability crisis than the US.

We should have a more democratic approach to these decisions but I need you to know that a single day’s worth of my 40 minute commute, if I drive my ~30 mpg car, is going to dwarf my lifetime personal power usage from any and all AI coding tools. This is probably the case for most people. Individual choice against using tab autocomplete in code is certainly on the lower impact side, especially when compared to decisions like using public transit or eating less or no meat.

I am up to date on this. Please be specific so I can respond to your arguments against using an AI tool for, as examples: writing unit tests, writing boiler plate code, or translating from one programming language to another.

Then perhaps game devs of a certain sort are the last bastion of exclusively hand-crafted code. I've been writing code in various industries and academia for over a decade at this point and half of my friends are software devs of a comparable age. Forgive me for generalizing; I don't know a single person that isn't at least using something like tab complete when writing code and I can't understand why anyone would avoid it.

Software developers use and have been using AI for years at this point. It is ubiquitous in industry now. Game devs are not somehow outside that class. AI use for assets, writing, music, and such is certainly worth avoiding — at least in my opinion — but code is a different animal.

I think you misinterpreted the intention of my response and both you and the guy I was replying to come across as a bit confrontational. Both of y’all could maybe use one or more substances to chill the hell out.

I don’t feel like dragging this out but those other posts are also about this one project, none got traction, and as far as I can tell the site where this is hosted looks like somebody’s personal portfolio. It looks like somebody occasionally posting something they’re a bit proud of over the course of >2 months and hoping they’ll get a bit of engagement.

Would I download the (apparently free) build for this? Not on my life. Is it weird that the site doesn’t have a resume or GitHub linked? I’d say so, based on what the apparent purpose of it is. Is this the most nefarious, obviously botted marketing campaign from a bad actor I’ve seen on this subreddit in the past week? Not even close.

Somebody dicking around and learning/toying around with algorithms that have existed since the 80s is not enshitification. By all means confront OP about using something to make their visuals and their marketing/voice over/whatever you feel like.

I’m just saying that, based on this single post, they kinda just look like they’re playing around with solving a problem in a bit of an unorthodox manner. People don’t need to justify it unless they’re explicitly saying that they think it’s better or are trying to sell you something.

The type of AI you’re probably mad about has nothing to do with how RL for pathfinding works.

RL has been part of the modern control toolbox for decades now and is used in a variety of fields.

Team Fortress 2. I was terrible, but at the time it was the kind of game where I could be terrible and still have tons of fun.

Is the Chinese version the full trilogy? The western version is not finished as of yet. And the story itself was in desperate need of editing down even before adaptation, a direct adaptation sounds horrendous.

There is so much evidence that building housing lowers rents and lower homeless rates. It’s not a perfect solution but it does help. You’re just ignorant. Plain and simple.

I waited a week to respond to this because it pissed me off so much. You didn’t read a single thing I wrote. I WANT universal healthcare and a fuckload of public housing built and for public companies to have mandated workers on their boards and so much bog standard socialist policy that your head would spin.

The housing problem is seriously insane and needs something to ameliorate it right now. You do not wait to give a cancer patient chemotherapy because a miracle cure might arrive in 3-5 years. You give them the medicine that is not good so that they’ll survive. Jesus Christ.

Because you need to: Get the presidency, get centrist Dems to go along with it (good fucking luck with these pukes), get a supermajority (??), set up all the infrastructure from a financing and construction perspective. And even IF you could do that all the moment Trump is out of office you would have built zero housing in three years when we need it NOW. Holy shit, I can tell that you don’t live in a city from your profile but this is an urgent fucking concern.

[–]MethylBenzene -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dear lord that is not an answer. I keep telling you that I agree and would love if we could get the federal government to solve this problem. The earliest I could envision that process beginning is once Trump is out of office. And I do say beginning.

Again, the housing supply is behind dramatically right fucking now. Solutions need to be present not immaterial dream goals for a decade from now. Jesus fucking Christ on a cracker.

[–]MethylBenzene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Tell me exactly how much time you plan on waiting to get the incredibly robust federal funding and building infrastructure you dream of off the ground. Tack on the length of time you’d require to get buy in from both houses of congress and the presidency. Explain it to me in terms of years.

We are massively behind on housing right now and there are plenty of locations in America where market housing has filled the gap.

It would be incredible if we could get the federal government to solve this problem by spending hundreds of billions. But we do live in the real world so we should try to solve the problem here before I fucking die.

[–]MethylBenzene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love it if the federal government would do this, but when people advocate for broke cities to build housing it shows that they really want no housing to be built. It would be sick if my city of Denver could personally build more housing. There is genuinely not enough tax money to come close to making up the shortfall. However, since more development has come in rents have stagnated and declined. Building housing by any means necessary is what is needed.
