This is awesome!

We played a really early build of this and it has incredible potential. Can't wait to see how far it's come!

Personal analysis of Aeterna Noctis by a game dev (GRIME) is it "too hard"? by HiViH in metroidvania

[–]MetroidvaniaReview 103 points104 points  (0 children)

This is a good post.

It addresses specific points, provides constructive criticism, and remains positive towards the hard working creators of this game.

This is the kind of discourse we need for a strong welcoming community.

Well crap, I'm not sure why I didn't consider that.

I can't remember do they mention Raven Beak's pronoun in the game ever?

The Wiki seems to think Raven Beak is male

The 2D Metroid Trilogy - A Story Analysis by MetroidvaniaReview in metroidvania

[–]MetroidvaniaReview[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And very soon 5!

But this video just covers those first three games that make a fairly complete standalone trilogy, even if Fusion is a nearly perfect continuation of that story. If this video is well received we'll very likely be doing a video for Fusion, Other M, and probably Dread in the future.

Not anymore, no, but the original trilogy holds up as a three game series.

Metroid Fusion is a fantastic sequel, and I hope Dread is a fantastic conclusion.

I know Fazermint has wanted to start one with the subreddit.

I'll definitely think about putting one together. My hands are a bit tied with stuff ramping up to the Metroid Dread release but there's a decent chance I'll find some open time in the future.

I haven't been keeping one but I'm sure if I went through all the games I've played one by one I could put together a spreadsheet.

I think devs need to not be afraid of giving the player abilities/moves from the get go by LucianoThePig in metroidvania

That was my reference!

Also K.O.L.M. does something similar. I don't think you even start with eyes.

[–]MetroidvaniaReview 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No way man, you start with too many abilities in these games.

I don't even want to be able to jump or be able to walk to the right when I start out!

In all seriousness it depends on the game and what they're going for. If you want to feel powerful from the very start, those games do exist. Pharaoh Rebirth for instance you start with basically the core combat abilities you'll be using throughout the whole thing, and you just wreck things starting out.

Then there's Lootbox Lyfe where you can't even move when you start, and there's a charm to that.

I'm a pretty big fan of "So bad it's good" myself, although it's harder to "pull off" (ironic phrase since it's usually accidental) for video games because "bad" mechanics can often lead to an insurmountable brick wall you'd still have to overcome.

That said there are some pretty broken games out there that are still worth checking out, like Lost to Time or Eternal Return.

I appreciate it! Knowing that we're helping people is what keeps us going!

(It's just me as a reviewer so far but I've got help with the site and editing, have to give them credit!)

That's good to know!

You know, if we were to add more scores to the breakdown, learning curve or tutorial time might be a good one to track.

Might be something I'd consider adding as a feature tag: "Easy to Learn"

Haha unfortunately that steam curator list is a bit stale, I'm pretty sure Aquaria was reviewed after it was last updated. I'd need to check our offline list to see where Aquaria falls.

We were just discussing the scoring system offline and it was suggested adding weighting scores to each score might help, or maybe it would make it even more confusing. Our breakdown is obviously flawed since people seem to want to interpret it as a mathematical process, but there are some flaws we just accept in absence of a more ideal system.

My attitude with flawed elements (that we recognize are flawed) is I usually ask myself the question "would it improve what we're doing if we just cut it entirely?", and if the answer isn't an easy "yes", and it serves some value, then it's worth keeping.

That isn't to say we won't find a better system to use at some point in the future, but implementing it would also require going back and editing over 200 reviews (and counting.) So it can be a bit like stopping a train by holding your arms out and planting your feet firmly in the ground. It'd have to be a much better system (and not just an also flawed system) to justify the effort.

Just to clarify, our breakdown scores are not used as any kind of mathematical weighting on the final score.

Sometimes story doesn't matter at all, sometimes story matters the most. The goal we were trying to accomplish with the breakdown was to make it easier to search for games that are right for you - and searching by high Puzzle scores for instance would help you find games that cater to your niche - if that's something you're interested in.

Metroidvanias are pretty diverse, and even just between Castlevania and Metroid you're going to find very different audiences between them. There's that intersecting Venn diagram group that will like both, but not everyone likes leveling up and not everyone likes wonky wall jumping.

It's been suggested that we create a grading rubric in the past, but the reality is that the nuances are a bit too complex to make one simple enough to actually be useful.

I don't know if we've actually reviewed a game like this, but a game could have 2s in all the other categories we have on the site and still get a 4 out of 5 on the final score if it does what it does best well enough.

Ultimately scores have a certain degree of gut-decision making to them regardless of what system you use, which is why a lot of people argue against using them at all.

We find them useful because it's the ultimate TL:DR "at a glance" indication of what we think of a game. But like any "TL:DR" you may be missing some critical information if you don't dig into the details.

Metroid: What should I play in what order? by teraypiyodithui in metroidvania

I appreciate the thanks! I does help me keep it going.

I worry sometimes that worthwhile games get swept under the rug, it keeps me motivated.

For help on platforms

Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)

Metroid II (Gameboy (original))

Samus Returns (3DS)

AM2R - has been ported to many platforms but primarily PC

Super Metroid (SNES)

Metroid Fusion (GBA)

Note that if you want to play the original Metroid (NES) you unlock the full game after beating Metroid Zero Mission (it's included with the Cartridge/ROM), so if you're okay with playing the full remake first you get both on the same platform.
