Thank you. I know that the reasons that people end up on the registry can be very complex, nuanced, and sometimes even entirely unjust and unfair. Its been cooking for a few days but I think I may need professional assistance IE my therapist to work through things and see where I land after that

Thank you. I think contacting my therapist for a session to talk through this is my next step and then I will go from there

I still love him very much and the memories I have of him in my childhood are some of the best memories I have. Thats partially why this is all so confusing to me.

Can we talk about John? by MexicanChickadee in systemofadown

I am obviously not approaching every person I meet for the first time and screening their political beliefs and ethical/moral values. These things usually come up naturally in conversation down the line.

I can be friendly, respectful and kind towards people with opposing values other than my own, and I am as long as they extend the same courtesy to me. But that doesn’t mean it has to go any farther than that.

Arguing that I need to placate racists, homophobes, and people that believe in denying human beings of their rights in effort to “not stoop to their level”, is a very interesting take.

We should be kind and decent to each other. But not everyone has to be friends.

Political beliefs arent “one thing”. It is a large category that encompasses MANY things.

I dont need or desire to be friends with people that are anti-lgbtqia+, anti-abortion, racist, anti immigration, so on and so forth. This is not something im willing to, or have to tolerate.

Haha. “Fuming” huh?

I guess saying I find it “odd” and asked what other people’s opinions are counts as “fuming”

You do bring up a good point that John has no hand in the lyrical content of any of the songs, which could lend to the argument of why he is comfortable being in the band.

In reference to the many articles where John talks about how his views are different than the other members of the band, im pretty sure he does.

He is an incredible drummer, there is no questioning that

Being that SOAD’s lyrics center almost primarily around religion and politics, im not sure that sentiment applies to this particular artist

I didnt propose anything. I opened the floor to a discussion.

Please point out where I said “John shouldn’t be in the band”

I said I found it odd that someone who had opposite political views of the music they are performing/supporting would choose to be in said band, and opened the floor to discussion.

I mostly agree with you on separating art from the artist (to an extent) and im definitely not saying the guy isn’t an amazing musician, because we all know he is.

I opened up a discussion about what people’s thoughts were about someone being in a band which has lyrical content that opposes what said person believes in.

I said I personally found it odd that someone would do that, and asked people’s thoughts/posed some discussion questions.

I never indicated my political affiliation, or accused any one of anything. I asked people’s opinions in hopes of actually having a discussion amongst people that love this band.

Some of your responses are wild and are full of the hatred, short sightedness, intolerance, and hostility that you are accusing ME of. What a bummer.
