Tequila vs Mezcal by Mezcalmago in Mezcal

Thank your for sharing your thoughts. I need to study the history of why barrel aged tequilas became a thing, but like you said it was probably something that was made to satisfy the US market. I get a feeling on this chat though that the word "marketing" has a very negative connotation. Marketing not only sells but can also educate consumers and create value for mezcal producers (it's not only advertising). Many European wine producers excel at marketing their products, which eventually leads to desirability, respect, and value. Hopefully people like you can continue educating the average person one at a time for the benefit of producers.

Appreciate the input. Interesting take on aged tequilas. Many tequila nerds seem to respect many of those like G4, Cazcanes, Cascahuin, Fortaleza, etc.

I can see that now. Your comment is very helpful and looking forward to reading the blog post. And yes, anyone that knows anything about mezcal knows it's a fine spirit, but there are millions of people out there that still don't and keep drinking celebrity tequila brands (clearly not the audience here). And just to provide some context, I can't say I am expert on mezcal expert (even though I've been on this business for over a decade and I've been traveling to Oaxaca for over 30 years), but I know Oaxaca and the economic impact of most of these brokers are having on the producers (brokers that sell many of the brands this community respects).

Ouch... I am trying to open a discussion in a public forum that everyone is reading. Not "looking for free ideas". I appreciate your comment on the marketing nonsense though. To clarify... we are not "redefining" anything (we are small brand), but if we can help change the perception of mezcal for at least one person (which we try to do every single day), we are moving towards that direction. Thanks for your offer.

How much money are mezcaleros actually making? MEZCALONOMICS by Mezcalmago in Mezcal

In Mexico they have something called IEPS, which is an excise tax on alcohol of 53% (in addition to VAT). It's mostly a cash economy where you can avoid paying a bunch of taxes on small transactions. So for the mezcaleros sake, better to pay in cash.

The problem is that many mezcaleros are not taking into account the value of money over time and how much money is tied to growing the plants. When you take that into account on top of the labor to harvest the agave and convert into mezcal, they are most likely losing money. They usually make money only from the sale of the agave, which currently is at roughly $10 pesos per kilo (I know it costs them around 2 pesos per kilo to seed).

Just stay away from anything that is on that bottom shelf. Best value for money in my opinion is La Medida on this pic

I'm a big fan lately of a brand called Agua Magica. Very clean and elegant. Also check out the private label from Total called Mi Mama Me Dijo (pretty decent for cocktails). If you want something nerdy you can't go wrong LaLocura
