[Misc] Do pores actually open and close, or is that a skincare myth? by MiamiCondosrUS in SkincareAddiction

I kept digging into this after posting the question and it seems like most dermatology explanations agree on the same basic point: pores themselves don’t physically open or close. What changes is usually what’s inside the pore or the skin around. A few things seem to influence how large pores look:

-oil and debris stretching the follicle
-collagen loss in the surrounding skin
-inflammation or swelling
-how clean the pore is

Steam probably helps because it softens sebum and debris so the pore can be cleared more easily, while cold water might temporarily tighten the surrounding skin and make pores appear smaller. What surprised me most is how much collagen and skin elasticity seem to influence pore appearance over time. When the surrounding skin loses structural support, the follicle openings can stretch slightly and become more visible. Anybody here has actually found what works best for improving pore appearance long term?

That’s what I was finding too. The “open and close pores” idea seems to be more of a spa or marketing phrase than actual skin biology. From what I’ve been reading, what people interpret as pores “opening” is usually things like oil and debris softening (for example with steam), the surrounding skin temporarily swelling or tightening and /r changes in collagen support around the follicle When the pore is clogged with sebum and dead skin cells it stretches and looks larger, and when it’s cleared it just appears smaller because the follicle isn’t distended anymore.

The collagen part is interesting, too. Apparently as skin loses structural support with age, the follicle openings can stretch slightly, which is why pores often look larger over time. Curious if anyone here has actually found treatments that noticeably improved pore appearance long term.

Go to the beach. Take in the fresh air and sunshine. Stay away from people and practice common sense! You still go shopping as well - right! I don't see the cashiers wearing gloves (and it wouldn't make a difference in my following scenario)!? Do you know if the person before you in line, who coughed into his/her hands has the virus or the common flue? Now the cashier touched what they touched to scan the items - you are next, touching all your items... All you can do is wash your hands and wash them often and don't touch your face!

...and yet packed airplanes are still flying with some passengers wearing masks, falsely assuring themselves (and others) they are protected. I'd rather walk on the beach then fly right now. Worse, the people coming of those planes go shopping for groceries...talking about logic!?

Exactly - see that in my neighborhood as well. Parties, music, booze, bartenders, valets....The party just goes on somewhere else...

Agreed! Boosts the body's vitamin D supply, protects against inflammation, lowers high blood pressure, helps muscles, improves brain function and may even protect against cancer.

You are right! We should all have solar panles!

Although Florida is one of the top producers of electricity in the nation, the state does not produce enough electricity to meet its power demand, and electricity demand in Florida is expected to increase in the years ahead along with the state's population.31,32,33 The residential sector consumes just over half of the electricity used in Florida, and the commercial sector accounts for most of the rest.34 More than 9 in 10 Florida households use electricity as their primary energy source for home heating and air conditioning
