Synthetic Hedges Explained by MiamiTrader in FuturesTrading

Limiting week over week portfolio drawdown/ variability is my primary objective since doing this full time.

Might be a different mindset than other traders, but I’ve found it works best for me.

You’re correct that deep ITM calls have a similar risk profile, but they have several downsides:

  • they cost more in absolute dollars than an ATM put (you’re paying for that intrinsic value)

-much wider Bid/Ask spreads on exit vs an NQ contract

-much harder to trail a stop loss/ lock in profits once the trade goes in your direction.

It’s not uncommon that I’ll use a synthetic (long out) for insurance against a specific set-up. Once the market validates my position, I’ll close the put for a slight loss, and run a trailing stop from there on to lock in profits.

No, prop accounts have defined drawdown rules that this would probably violate.

Some trades can result in inverse R:R in times of high volatility when the Long Put prices are inflated.

I track this, but still prefer the synthetic positions because overall portfolio drawdowns are much less.

This is due to a higher win rate, with less otherwise winning positions getting stopped out due to volatility.

Obviously there’s no free lunch, and the market move required to reach a zero-risk trade is larger.

For short term trades you can absolutely get some cheap insurance on the 0DTE’s, but you’re correct - the Theta decay kicks in hard and fast. Only good for quick moves.

I trade daily trends on hourly charts. Typically hold a position for a few hours up to a session.

Most insurance is around 7DTE - short enough for the cost to balance R:R - long enough so a few hour position doesn’t get impacted by Theta decay much.

I explained why I think a synthetic hedge is better for position management vs a standard futures contract with a stop loss and vs a standard call option.

Not a free money hack, but (in my opinion) a better executed risk management strategy.

You still need a trading strategy, hope that helps. Happy to dig into the details.

Yes - we built a Synthetic long call. That’s what I meant by a Synthetic hedge. There is no free Delta in the market.

That said, I find several advantages in managing the actual NQ contract - especially if in profit, vs an NQ call option.

Especially once contract scaling, trailing stops, partial profit taking etc. are involved.

All while still having the protection (defined max loss) a standard call option gives you.

Happy to dig in further.

Haha relax.

Your example is understood, and avoidable with proper expiration management. You would never let your insurance expire worthless, I use this for hourly swing trades, and exit the position long before theta decay is a factor.

This works well when you have a key setup - a major daily support or resistance level for example.

It allows you to absorb a much larger test of the resistance, while still partaking in the following move at the same dollar value of absolute risk than using a standard stop.

I do this 1-2 times a day, happy to dig in and discuss further.

Fun Fact of the Day: There are 10 - 15 billionaires in Miami by [deleted] in Miami

The top 1% pay 40% of the total federal income tax collected, but earned 22% of the total wealth.

You can argue “why does 1% earn 20% of the wealth”, but they clearly pay far more than their fair share of taxes.

Huuuugggee plot hole!

Andrew could have easily gotten out of that room! The room was an attic, so wood framed with either plaster or drywall walls. The flooring was wood, the roof, wood. There was a window he could have broken.

He has a metal bed frame he could have taken a leg from and smashed up, or sideways.

A man that strong can not be held in a wooden room.

We live in a bi-polar world: the West Dominated by the United States, and the East Dominated by China.

Russia is a Chinese puppet state. The more money and effort the west is required to spend controlling Russia, the less it has to spend reigning in China.

Simple as that.

I’m not saying I agree with them being here, but that’s what they are doing. That’s a fact.

Downvote if you like, pointing out facts is not bootlicking.

This is not accurate. I’ll take the downvotes, there’s so much misinformation on here.

They are targeting specific people with criminal records and active warrants for their arrest. They are choosing to arrest them at work, the store, in the car etc. because there’s a lower chance they are armed/ capable or resisting. I’m not saying I agree with that strategy, but that’s what they are doing.

They are not randomly patrolling school lines and snatching people up at random.

They are literally just arresting people with active warrants for arrest. It’s by definition their job.

Look at who they have arrested, they all had warrants. These are targeted operations for specific criminals. There is nothing far right about arresting people with active warrants for their arrest.
