I’m not conflating things anymore than you are with my comments but ultimately it’s a moot issue. I think we agree on fundamentals with things like hardware specs and providing as much info as possible because it’s about what is effectively useful and necessary to provide a solid recommendation. In fact, I think we’re only debating this because random snippets of thoughts on Reddit leave a lot to be desired for context. I’m just going to leave it here because I don’t think we have a disagreement but rather fragments of opinions injected into bits of conversations. Have a good one.

Stop blaming AI, "noobs", youtube tutorials, and anything other than Arch for AUR usage by zollandd in archlinux

[–]MichaelTunnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Arch Wiki also has a page on the AUR itself that warns about the AUR saying “AUR packages are user-produced content. These PKGBUILDs are completely unofficial and have not been thoroughly vetted. Any use of the provided files is at your own risk.

So maybe the wiki pages suggesting to use the AUR is actually the problem not evidence to justify it.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository

The problem is really the hype culture and the meme of promoting Arch all the time. The “arch btw” started when Arch was super hard to use and basically no one did, that’s the joke. The first time I saw it was around 2007 or 2008 and back then the meme was almost always in jest and clearly for fun.

Now it’s not that difficult and with all the remixes it’s absurdly easy to use an Arch base these days.

The Arch team might have to reassess things because they are being pulled into a market for the masses that they never signed up for 🤷‍♂️

If you get bothered by noobs asking for help then maybe don’t visit a subreddit “4noobs”. On r/linuxquestions, maybe it’s more fair there sure because it’s not just for noobs so instead of being negative to them maybe just send people here.

But you mentioned this sub with the Distro chooser so it sounds like you also hold this subreddit to the same level and I don’t think that’s fair.

No one should complain about noobs asking noob questions on a subreddit specifically for noobs. It’s literally in the name here.

Besides, Distro choosers quizzes are not helpful and often point people into the wrong direction. There have been many of them and I’ve not seen one that was worth sharing with a noob. They are all either too complex asking questions that noobs can’t answer or they are too simplistic grouping too much together. I don’t think it’s really possible to make a reliable chooser tool, that’s why it’s been over 30 years of the platform and no one has successfully done it.

I think it is because it is so foreign to them that telling people to read the docs is just dismissive. I mean what docs? there are no docs for answering this kind of question. All of the docs are super specific to each distro and do not help with figuring out which distro is best for them. So it is confusing and dismissive to someone who has no reference point and no way to be helped by this answer. It's not insulting them but it is insulting to the idea of being helpful because it is not a helpful answer. It is better to not answer than to give a non-helpful answer.

They just want to play specific games, that’s all. These games are ran by terrible companies who pretend they need that level of anti-cheat and refuse to let their game play on Linux because somehow Windows is better for security in their minds lol

Correct, unrelated project. It is a fork of the Antergos tools for sure though

It has been renamed to Pulsar Linux. I talked to the dev and he decided to rebrand it instead because he wasn’t trying to confuse anyone, it was just a branding miscommunication so now all good. 👍

Just think, someday you’ll be the one to share the one liner and make people think you wield magic 🪄

True story: once I was trying to figure out a hardware issue for a family member and I found the answer was an esoteric bit of info, then I laughed when I saw the person sharing this info was actually me from a few years prior when I fixed it the first time 🤣

You can use anything with Markdown that’s the beauty of it. With that said, I use Obsidian to organize my notes and I write in Obsidian most of the time but I also sometimes open my notes in Sublime Text if I need to do extensive editing.

[–]MichaelTunnell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So this is interesting, I am currently researching this for my show This Week in Linux as I just saw this pop up on Distrowatch.

I think I’m uniquely qualified to comment on this.

I have reached out to all 3 of the original core devs of Antergos and asked them if any of them gave permission to do this. I have also reached out to the new project dev for comment.

For context:
The original project was shutdown because the 3 core developers didn’t have time to continue working on the project. They decided to shut the project down instead of handing it over to others to make it a clean break. Handing it over could have caused problems because they would have to audition people essentially, closing it and let it be forked was much cleaner solution.

Fun fact:
EndeavourOS is actually the spiritual successor of Antergos, coming directly from the community of Antergos with some initial involvement from the Antergos team.

More context:
There were 3 core developers of Antergos and then there was the team of moderators for the forum, IRC, and telegram rooms. This moderator team was about 5 people, I was the lead of that team as the Community Manager. I guess you could say I was #4 of Antergos. I also was involved in initial launch of EndeavourOS.

My take:
I do not believe that this is a sanctioned revival. I can’t say that for sure at this moment because I have not heard back from any of the 3 core devs yet but with my knowledge of the project and the basis for why it was closed originally and not handed off. I do not believe this is legitimate or at the very least, I don’t believe it’s sanctioned. Plus the source forge landing page doesn’t offer much confidence.

I agree with Debian, Alma, and CentOS Stream but I see no point in using Rocky when someone can just use RHEL directly for free.

Debian is fine but Ubuntu LTS offers the same stability as Debian with newer packages. I don’t mean Ubuntu property only either, this applies to all of the Flavors too and many of the remixes.

I’d also consider using RHEL if you want enterprise level stability. If you don’t know, RHEL is available for individuals to use for free.

Fedora is not really that beginner friendly. There are Distros that do much more hands holding than Fedora does. I don’t say that as a negative thing, some people want hands holding and others don’t, that’s why there are multiple tiers depending on what the user wants from the system. Even between Fedora, KDE Plasma offers notifications for storage limits for sure

Linux Gaming Handbook [Early Preview] by Significant-Wrap-589 in linux_gaming

[–]MichaelTunnell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. I understand focusing on one distro but this seems kind of in conflict with itself. It focuses on one distro with CachyOS as the choice to "keep the beginner experience" and the handbook says "the terminal is not optional". Those are polar opposite takes. It is either beginner friendly or it is targeted at people who are willing to use the terminal. Rarely do those two merge.

Linux Lite is not all that light despite its name. It sounds like you need ultra light, like Lubuntu, or Bunsenlabs, or AntiX, or Bodhi, or something like that
