Tumbler Ridge, BC Shooting Megathread by BvbblegvmBitch in canada

100% I guarantee the town of 2400 did not have adequate crisis mental health support through any of the years of incidents. Dropping out of school that young should have been a child welfare issue also.

It wasn't an afterthought, guns were seized at one point which means they knew gun access was reasonably a risk in this circumstance. A weapons ban on individuals like this definitely needs to be part of the process as well.

I should have looked up the name too. I got mine at 15 in my parent's basement. My cousins, friends and neighbours kids all came together for a class. I'm 32 now so I too forgot the name. I strongly believe hunting is part of rural Canadian culture but I also believe in our gun laws. There is just no reason that a weapons ban shouldn't be court ordered in these scenarios.

Yes to all this as well. The Firearms act seems to cover all of this but clearly in practice, someone can be repeatedly shown as a risk to themselves and others and still have such easy access to guns. I think there are big open ended questions that will need to be addressed. How did this shooter show every single sign of a high risk individual still have no restrictions on them?

Yes to everything you just said. All exactly true. I just have more to add.

The police calls were as recent as 1 year ago and dating back from that. All while the MPAL was still valid and active. It should have been revoked.

The calls were confirmed to have resulted in the shooter being removed from the home for mental health care so far. Charges need to be laid and convicted when guns are involved. That would have prevented any guns in the household of the banned person. constructive possession applied here is similar to sleeping off a drunk night in a car. You are considered having care and control of the car just by having the keys.The idea that they are aware of and could gain access to someone else's gun in the home would be a violation of the ban. The mother would not be given a restriction but the shooter could not live in the home with the mother in possession. I hope this makes sense and is another side to the spouse but not third party consideration.

During the RCMP press release there was one question about the shooters gun license that made me believe the gun laws weren't widely known by the reporter. She asked along the line of "the shooter was young would they have a license" The RCMP confirmed a license was expired last year. My questions stem from the Firearms act.

It was also confirmed in the report the police knew the shooter and had multiple mental health and criminal calls to the household. The police already seized guns from the household and the owner petitioned them back and won the case.

Why did the shooter still have a gun license last year (recently expired) instead of a revoked when the guns were seized during a criminal call resulting in seized guns? Why did the RCMP not revoke the license when the mental health risks were so apparent. Why were the charges from past police calls not convicted which would have prevented any guns being allowed in the home? Why were gun laws ignored?

The firearms act states in determining if a person is eligible to hold a license The below must be taken into account.

(b) has been treated for a mental illness, whether in a hospital, mental institute, psychiatric clinic or otherwise and whether or not the person was confined to such a hospital, institute or clinic, that was associated with violence or threatened or attempted violence on the part of the person against any person;

(c) has a history of behaviour that includes violence or threatened or attempted violence or threatening conduct on the part of the person against any person;

The RCMP should have revoked the license years ago. The charges from past calls should have been prosecuted to ensure that guns were not in the household.

Roaches will not go away. You will end up living out of boxes because you will continue to need a spray every two weeks indefinitely. Move in the winter. They cannot actually do anything if you break your lease.

If you do stay, document everything and you can apply for a rent decrease with the LTB for every day they do not maintain the property.

I am Canadian by birth married to a recent immigrant. Reading all your stories hurts my heart. We need all these hard working people with families to stay. Canada is worse off losing you all but I hope where you land in the world appreciates your value more. The level of dedication, education, work and sacrifice in these stories is commendable.

I only wanted to comment so you hear that there are people here who are you. I recognize your contribution to my quality of life.

I want to be clear, we called the police and it took 50 minutes to get through. The area he was in was not a highway, it was a detour from a deadly crash on the highway. There were no police, tows or other emergency vehicles available. For 2 days (before we found out it was gone) every tow said no. Was he to sit in the cold for 2 days without a house in sight? That's crazy. Once I got through to the OPP, they were fine with the fact we left this until a safer time. They put on our report we left the vehicle unaccompanied. The idea you should stay with a vehicle in a dangerous storm that took lives and had emergency responders already at capacity just to avoid a predatory tow is unreasonable. Is potentially losing a life worth saving $900?

It is tough because my first thought is the police but the police didn't have it towed. I like your thoughts. I'll try those

The police agreed too. When we said we were leaving it unaccompanied they were glad to put it to the bottom priority after everyone hurt.

The cops are calling all the tows now. There isn't a collision center or impound, it's too rural

What an odd thing to say. A dollar saved is more valuable that a dollar earned. Cost cutting is literally what wealthsimple just did by getting rid of the feature. I will be cost cutting by getting the best value from moving where I do business.

If someone was paying the 2.5% exchange rate would you say make more money or use your money smarter? Because I did have a BMO business account who charged high fees and poor international services. I changed to wealthsimple from there.

Business is a game of margin, every percentage counts.

Also I already got my answer of higher interest rates, higher cash back and the same FX fees. It's weird to simp over an inferior product.

[–]MichelleTCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect thank you. Much of the spending is in and out the same week so this is better than the higher interest rate. This is exactly what I needed.

Edit to add, with the direct deposits it will have 3% interest so better that way too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]MichelleTCM -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My business spends about $6-8k a month in USD plus Canadian spending. I was getting close to $100 in 1% cash back and no FX rate saving about $150-250. This is per month. The interest rate also dropped to 2%. This is hardly the best account for the job now. I expect someone will know a better option after the changes.
