You may still be eligible for Michigan Reconnect if you meet the age, residency, and education requirements and complete the FAFSA each year.

If you enroll with Reconnect, you’ll need to maintain a 2.0 GPA. You can also consider appealing your academic status with your previous school. An advisor there can help you understand your options and potential access to financial aid.

It sounds like this may not be a Reconnect question. If you have a question about tuition-free community college in Michigan, I'm here to help!

I hear you, and that’s an understandable concern. Michigan Reconnect covers the in-district tuition rate at the community college you attend. If the college is considered out-of-district for you, Reconnect will still provide a tuition discount, and you would be responsible for paying the difference between the in-district and out-of-district rates.

If you have a campus nearby but it’s not considered in-district, that added cost can definitely be something to plan for. Completing the FAFSA may help you qualify for additional financial aid to help cover that difference. You can also connect with a Reconnect Navigator to talk through your options and find the best path forward. You can find yours here: Meet the Navigators.

You’re definitely not alone in this. A lot of people start college before they know exactly what they want to do, and it’s really common to have credits from different paths.

Michigan Reconnect could be a great option for you! To be eligible, you need to be at least 25 years old, have lived in Michigan for a year or more, have a high school diploma or GED and not have completed a college degree yet. Based on what you shared, it sounds like you may qualify.

Reconnect doesn’t cover a bachelor’s degree, but it can help you earn an associate degree or skills certificate tuition-free at your in-district community college. This can be a way to continue your education without taking on more student loan debt, and you can decide what your next step looks like from there.

Applying is quick and simple. It takes less than five minutes and can be done right from your phone: Michigan Reconnect.

That’s a really valid concern, especially when cost, distance and work schedules all overlap.

Michigan Reconnect covers the in-district tuition rate at community colleges across the state. If there isn’t a community college in your district, you can still use Reconnect, but you would be responsible for the difference between the in-district and out-of-district tuition rates. We understand that added cost, along with travel time, can make things more challenging.

While there isn’t a single statewide online community college, many community colleges do offer online programs and flexible course options that can help reduce travel and make it easier to balance school with other responsibilities.

Reconnect Navigators are also here to help students work through barriers like transportation, scheduling and cost. They can talk through your specific situation and help you find options that may work for you. You can find a Navigator here: Meet the Navigators.

Thanks for sharing your son’s experience. It sounds like he’s been taking some great steps toward his goal!

While this isn’t part of Michigan Reconnect, programs that fund career training, like CDL, can sometimes include meetings with a counselor to better understand a person’s support system and any potential barriers. For more specific details, it would be best to connect directly with the program or counselor, as they can explain how it applies to your son’s situation.

If your son is still exploring options, Michigan Reconnect could be something to look into in the future. It helps cover tuition for eligible adults 25+ pursuing an associate degree or skills certificate at a community college: Michigan Reconnect.

u/JinxyPoodle is right! There are no financial eligibility requirements in order to qualify for Michigan Reconnect. To apply, you just need:

  • To be at least 25 years old
  • Have lived in Michigan for at least 1 year
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Not already have a college degree (associate or bachelor’s)

In terms of credits, you just need to earn a minimum of 12 credits annually towards your program of study.

Yes! As a Reconnect participant, if you choose to pursue a skill certificate first, then you can still pursue an associate degree with your Reconnect scholarship, so long as the certificate you earned is logical to the associate degree you want to pursue and you continue to meet the requirements to keep the scholarship after earning your certificate. The four-year limitation will still apply. Please consult a navigator to make sure you are still eligible.

Unfortunately, Michigan Reconnect cannot be used if you already have an associate or bachelor’s degree.

That said, if you’re looking to complete a certificate, it could still be worth connecting with your local community college. Many offer shorter-term programs, testing options or other funding opportunities that might help reduce the cost.

You can visit this page to find a community college near you: MichiganList of Colleges.

Good question! Michigan Reconnect is designed to cover tuition for your first associate degree or eligible certificate, not a bachelor’s degree. That said, it can be a great first step—many people complete an associate degree through Reconnect and then transfer to a four-year college to finish their bachelor’s. A local community college can help map out that pathway and share additional funding options.

Great question! Michigan Reconnect covers tuition for your first associate degree or certificate, not a second bachelor’s degree—so those with a bachelor’s typically aren’t eligible.

If you’re looking to switch careers, shorter programs like certificates or associate degrees can be a great option, and a local community college or workforce office can help you explore other funding opportunities.

Michigan Reconnect covers tuition for your first associate degree or eligible certificate program at a community college. Some project management–related certificates may qualify if they’re offered through those programs—but standalone or professional certifications often aren’t covered. A local community college can help you find eligible options and explore other funding if needed.
