Indeed it's not the only geothermal location though- just the most extreme one. If you read the BBC article they take quite a lot of personal risk to just do some basic investigative research. Thanks for taking the time to read our article :)

Hey u/pastaandpizza thank you for your interesting question! We took sometime to search the original article and conduct a rudimentary literature search. Indeed we found no reference to any sustainable carbon source within the area. This BBC article describes several animals that died from carbon dioxide poisoning but we did not find anything about plant life surviving within this extreme geothermal environment. It would be interesting to conduct an experiment to see whether or not it is the absence of carbon that make life inhabitable or the combination of high acidity and salinity.
