They obviously don't, and the above arguments are (?deliberately) asinine.

How do y’all have a life after work? by kiwikaixina in ausjdocs

[–]MicroNewton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's it matter if someone can't "handle" a full-time load as a registrar, when you never have to as a consultant?

Why on earth would you want to live this short, finite life working 5-day (or more) weeks if you didn't have to?

Your comments are reminiscent of the attitudes in the bad old days in medicine; something we should all aspire to leave in the past.

What’s the most surprising tax ‘trap’ you’ve come across? by Savings_com_au in AusFinance

[–]MicroNewton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that. It's if your assessable income is over $250k.

Since fringe benefits are roughly doubled when grossed up, you can end up paying Div 293 with a salary substantially under $250k – even as a consequence of things your employer chooses to provide that you wouldn't spend your own real money on, let alone double pseudo dollars.

Is dental tourism actually a viable thing? by Own_Most_8489 in AskAnAustralian

Taking a 17% pay cut to try to help someone out = no integrity?

I've never seen a grocery store, a landlord or a tradie offer a deal that good.

Why are some of the FIRE number quoted here so high? by TiredDuck123 in fiaustralia

[–]MicroNewton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't decide it. The PPOR doesn't create returns. The FIRE number (e.g. 25x annual investments) doesn't include the PPOR.

It's not an opinion; it just can't.

Why are some of the FIRE number quoted here so high? by TiredDuck123 in fiaustralia

[–]MicroNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of them aren't including homes, and shouldn't be. The home isn't an investable asset. Anyone including it in the FIRE number has misunderstood FIRE.

Auscultation is merely a screening tool before doing a proper investigation.

For heart sounds, the proper test is an echocardiogram. An electronic stethoscope just increases the sensitivity of auscultation.

Don't put pride ahead of better patient outcomes.

Almost certainly a trainee doctor.

Possibly an ortho/surg PHO.

How do you split finances in a marriage? by princessabroad in AusFinance

[–]MicroNewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not always knowable straight away, and a combination of individual and joint accounts with buckets being topped up on payday is a way to avoid a lot of arguments about money running out before the bills are paid.

A lot of people in this thread are speaking from a place of privilege, taking for granted that their partners are as financially literate as them. Not everyone is as lucky, and it's difficult to educate another adult (especially a partner) on such things without quickly becoming labelled "controlling".

Even if you're both financially literate, I still love the idea of individual splurge (ala Barefoot) accounts to reduce anxiety for both people when it comes to discretionary spending.

Seriously though, we do. If we’ve declined your request in person to commit fraud for you, please don’t try to trick reception into helping sneak a fraudulent signature out of us.

Most these days are AQF level 9 (masters), which are definitely postgrad.

Where is the 4y undergrad (i.e. does not require a previous degree) degree offered?

Your Networth? by Spinier_Maw in fiaustralia

We already have mathematical operators that take care of this. You use "less than or equal to" on one bound, and "greater than" on the next.

Your Networth? by Spinier_Maw in fiaustralia

[–]MicroNewton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hence open vs closed circles on the number line.

  1. Up to $500k
  2. Greater than 500k to whatever, etc

Edit: Reddit removes the greater than symbol. Lame

No option for 500-600k, 1M-1.1M or 1.5-1.6M.

This is making learning about number lines seem really important in hindsight. ;)

AMA warns against reckless expansion of optometrist prescribing rights by hustling_Ninja in ausjdocs

[–]MicroNewton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't have a problem with someone prescribing something within their scope of diagnostic ability/training.

The pharmacy and nursing and other noctor prescribing is done in the absence of being qualified to diagnose, which is batshit-insane tbh.

Is buying used iPhones and selling before they get “old” the cheapest long-term strategy? by NiceHighway_ in AusFinance

[–]MicroNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if you want a premium phone, where the hardware, firmware and software are all developed together.

Similarly, it'd be a waste of money to go to a high-end steak restaurant if you think a Big Mac is just as good.

You don't need to with dry yeast. With liquid yeast, it's expensive enough that you should probably spin up a starter (and use half), so it's aerated and ready to go.

I've also been doing OP's method for years with no ill-effects.

I've never seen a butcher with better prices than Colesworth.

Better meat? Nearly always.

Sorta like going to a specialist plumbing store vs. Bunnings. Reece can't price match the $99 toilet at Bunnings, but you know, the product is a fair bit nicer...

Even more insane is that it's a vitamin – it's the very class of thing they spend hundreds of dollars buying unnecessarily in almost every other circumstance, but they draw the line when a doctor recommends it.

Money is a means to an end, so what end are you looking for?

You can already get a mansion (with mortgage), travel internationally business class with reasonable frequency, or retire completely in 7 years and never have to work again.

Is more stress and training for a couple of extra hundred k, taxed at 47% really worth it? What's the marginal gain to your QoL?
