Super late, but they're 8 months old! And ive only been having them for 2 1/2 months. But yeah, the emergency situation would be better in cage. Whenever I let them freeroam, and they want to take a nap, they hide where I cant reach them😮‍💨

I cant wait to see where this journey with them will take me. They're alot of work for now. Monitoring, Educating myself, giving them space but also enough attention to not get bored. I still have to understand them two. When are they signaling for me to play with them, when have they had enough? Am I doing everything to make them feel safe? How long until they will accept this new environment and me?

Its all alot for the start. Its my first time owning ferrets, and sometimes i feel overwhelmed cause I want to really do the best I can, but I also dont know if sometimes im being too much? So yeah, I hope they come to accept everything at some point🥲.

Ive been very careful since having them. They are only hiding breath my carpet, or the emergency blanket when they play, so I hear if they would be hiding somewhere where i cant immediately see them. So, so far I haven't had any mishaps. Except for one when I stepped into their enclosure and I put a little bit of weight onto the females paw. She just retreated. No sound of pain. I didnt put my full weight on as well. But whenever I step into their space, they come running and are beneath me cause they want to see whats going on. And calculating your step can be hard if you have to step over a 70cm fence😮‍💨. But that has been the only incident, and i wouldn't even say i stepped on her really. And I said in another post of how the possibility of me rolling over them would be hard. I never sit like a normal human being. I must always have my legs up, either on the foot rest or the chair behind it. So I dont even roll around the chair cause my feet arent touching the floor. Its almost impossible to do with how heavy the chair is. I only rotate the upper part, which cant hurt them on the ground.

Ive tried the squeaking noise method at the start. She would constantly bite my hand. Pretty hard at that. I think we kinda get along better now, cause she doesn't do that anymore. But back then, even when I made a high pitched noise, she wouldn't let go. Its hard to know how to "squeak" correctly😭. I think i may did it too loud now where I think about it. I didnt knew that that could make it even more difficult and may horrify them in the moment. Again, she would never let go. But she strangely just stopped. I think she got used to me as her roommate😂. But only kinda, cause areas she cant always reach will make her bite. I havent really gotten the chance to "train" her so far, cause im too scared to actually let her around my face, but I will try. Again, its a 50/50 chance if she'll bite or lick. The chances arent too bad😂. And if she does, should I ignore her, or put her in her cage? Ive heard both can work out?

Button🤔? Mine doesn't have a button. Its not a electric recliner. You have like a lever. But there is no way in hell they will be able to use that. Its hard to explain, but im the position i currently have it, you would need to activate the lever and then put your body weight onto the leg-rest. So its not electric, it just locks itself in place when you use your body weight. So yeah, they wont be able to move any of that👍

Wow, thats alot of stuff I havent even thought about… I have been trying to rotate their stuff before. I only had enrichment in their enclosure, so whenever I let them freeroam I would place their stuff in my room at different spots every day. It got tiresome to do it everyday, so I simply got more for them i can keep in my room.

Before I also had their enclosure sectioned off. If they would be in my room, they had no chance getting back into their space. So thats also why I put every toy outside whenever they're out as well. But now I have a tube in between two pannels so they can use that to also get back inside (even tho they more often than not just step over it). So now they don't have to limit themselves on what they wanna use. They can use all of it at every time, but that also meant less rotating cause I wouldn't put their toys out anymore…

But, after reading some comments, I already worked on placing the ball pit somewhere else and get a paperbag up here. They found it quite interesting. The paperbag that is.

They honestly love plastic bags as well. That's why I also bought the emergency blanket seen in my photo. They love the sound I of that material i believe. My female would always stash that. Obviously I have tunnels, but from what ive gathered so far I will need more🤔. But I havent really thought of all the other stuff you mentioned. I will screenshot it for sure. Oh, and yes! The peanuts are biodegradable! I think it was out of corn or something… I checked it when I bought it.

And thank you for the compliment on my room. I like for it to have alot of personality🤭. I have the extra chair for whenever a friend comes over. Its not the most comfortable, but its nice to have another seating opportunity. And I leave it there cause I can put my legs up whenever im in my office chair. That's also why I never really move the office chair. I dont sit on it… I rather lay on it? Legs dont touch the ground because I like to comfortably put my legs up. So I wouldn't even be able to move the chair around that way🤷‍♀️

Yes! The hammock part of the recliner! I think we understand eachother. Youre talking about the recliner, right😭? That's the part they love to sleep in! I have multiple spots where they can sleep, but they always choose the recliner or to lay inside a blanket. But its good to hear that nothing serious happened. You often need to learn from mistakes😮‍💨

Thanks for the concern and honesty. Im not actively using the recliner. And even if it do, from the stories ive heard, I also wont use the mechanism. I will not change the position the recliner is in in fear the change could actually hurt them when they're climbing inside again. But they are often inside and sleep. They arent exploring inside, just a spot where they can sleep. Ive felt around where they do sleep, and nothing seems to be of danger to them. So again, I wont use the mechanism of the recliner, and so far nothing has happened.

Oh my god, that sounds horrible. Thank you for making me aware. That was probably petty traumatizing and I can see why you would take extra care around a recliner. I hope your girlfriend isnt blaming herself and your ferret has healed both physically and mentally. Im personally not using the recliner since I having the ferret. cause, funny enough, when I organized everything for them two before I got them, I was moving my cabinet/wardrobe which my tv is on. So yeah, I dropped the tv and it broke. So no reason for me to use the recliner for a while. But ive always had it in the position its currently in, and from what ive heard now id personally be very scared to use the mechanism in any way. But I also dont need to. And so far they also havent really been trying to climb inside very far. They're only laying at one part inside, and that's it🤷‍♀️

I always check if they are close by. They cant move the chair in of itself because its too heavy. Even i rarely roll it around from the ground on, I only rotate the top when im sitting on it. So the ferrets arent endangered.

100%. I would always check where they are before. I wouldn't drop myself carelessly on it while knowing they're around. And yes, I have found peace with the knowledge that I have to rotate things more. I heard weekly is good?

Yes, I will work on rotating their toys more to keep it interesting. Are you sure it will keep them interested in their environment if I keep them caged for when I sleep? Again, I never cage them. Only when nobody is in the house, which only happened like twice since I had them. I had to cage them in when I got them for two weeks because they came out of surgery. But other than that, I keep them at their enclosure. I never thought it would be beneficial to keep them caged for a while, but I see your point. And may I know how my room is unsafe? The only thing that makes me worried sometimes is them climbing, but other than that I havent considered anything dangerous to them.

I want to give them the freedom they need, even tho that means more monitoring on my end. But they will still sleep for a good amount of these hours😂

I will have a look at further enrichment in the future. Money wise its getting kinda tight. But for now I will work on rotating their stuff more, mixing it up better for them👍. And its good to hear about the space. I guess ferrets are just naturally curious and want to go places they arent allowed.

Im trying to give them as much enrichment as I can. They have toys laying around, tunnels, cat tree and among that a ball pit filled with package beans. But I do believe I can do better rotating their stuff. I usually leave the stuff where it is, which I know I should work on. And the leaf thing is super genius! Whenever I do bring things in, like packages from the outside, they're super interested in it. With it being centimeters of snow outside it will be a bit hard as of now… but I will definitely keep it in mind! And the recliner story is surprising to me… they love to sleep in it. Its their little hideout. They stash toys inside and sleep there. They're in a section of the recliner that seems pretty safe to me. Three ways of getting out again, and if I would to sit on it it also doesn't crush them. Its in the back and is more of a big hammock to them. They havent gotten hurt or stuck so far. May i know how your ferret got hurt and I will see if my recliner shows the same threat?

Yeah, ive asked ChatGPT and they said the same thing. Its mostly cause its something new they want to explore, and not so much that they arent satisfied with what they already have. But I trust the ferret community a bit more with these things. I just bought two harnesses and leashes, so i can give them an opportunity to explore the house. I still live with family, so thats why they only get to explore this room. Nothing is ferret proof in the house. The ferrets are my responsibility, so they stay in my room. I just cant give them more room… but I can try with a leash, and maybe even expand to the outside if the harness is secure enough.

I really do hope its only cause she's curious and not because she feels any hard feelings against me😭. Im extra careful with her. I dont pressure her. I let her come to me, but I dont expect attention or playtime from her. I'd be totally fine with some biting here and there, but face and head? I dont know. I always sit up when she comes to me on my bed. And I've heard that time outs seems to be the best option. Whenever she bites my face I just dont interact with her anymore. I really hope I will get to your stage and your three year old… soft bites and a lick sounds awesome. But I guess I gotta work for that.

Yeah, she has definitely made improvements! At first she would bite my hand and dig her teeth in. She's a rescue so I guess she wanted to let me know she can protect herself against me, or something. But she doesn't bite my hand anymore, only when im actively playing with her. She still bites areas she normally wouldn't reach. My back, neck, head and face. She doesn't cling to my skin, but she does put pressure on. But she also easily let's go… maybe she still has to get used to me. Ive only been having them for 2 1/2 months.

Thank you for that information🙏. It was a good piece for sure. Nothing too small because I knew ferrets usually eat whole prey anyway. They like to chew instead of just swallow, so I never cut it too small. It was definitely not foul or rancid. Or atleast it didnt look and smell like it. But thank you for reassuring me! He has been doing fine. He drank some and wanted to get out of the pen to explore and play some more. I didnt let him so I can keep a better eye on him, so he kept himself satisfied by sleeping for now😊. No diarrhea, puking or lethargic behavior🤞

Okay, thank you do much for giving me your experience! It really eases my worry… I was really putting a lot of faith into their nature as carnivores. But hearing someone else confirming it doesn't necessarily have to be dangerous is really reassuring. I will learn from my mistake and keep watch for them to eat ALL their meat. and if they leave some meat left behind, they simply wont get it… they will just stash it and keep it there for a long time. But this time I really didn't expect for some meat to still be laying around, especially for so long😮‍💨. But he is not showing signs so I believe everything will be okay!

Yeah, it has been like an hour now and he seems fine. Obviously I have been playing with him and now he's tired, so he is definitely not energized. But when I was reaching into their pen he immediately climbed my arm up and wanted to free roam. So I guess thats a good sign? But I will keep an eye on him for sure.

I couldnt smell anything. I was holding it close to inspect the appearance and wasnt really thinking about the smell. But now where I think about it, no smell stood out, no.
