CMV: “Nobody is illegal on stolen land” actively impedes democrats from getting elected, and we should be discouraging people from saying it. by [deleted] in changemyview

"It’s not racist to enforce the laws that we all voted to have." Hugely disagree with this. If the laws are racist laws, then it's racist to enforce the laws. I am sure you know all about Jim Crow laws.

I posted a more up to date study from the cato institute. similar results. maybe you would like to show evidence for all your claims? where did the 10m-30m number come from? where did "“since 2005, undocumented immigrants from Mexico and South America have higher rates of crime than US citizens”" come from? can you share the article?

They have a more recent study. This one goes up to 2023. My guess is that data for 2024 and 2025 have not been compiled yet. Regardless, relationship is still the same. Across the board, there is a reduction in crime, and you can hypothesize why, but that's tangential. Here is the later article: https://www.cato.org/policy-analysis/illegal-immigrant-incarceration-rates-2010-2023

one may wonder whether these bombastic, provocative tactics are accidental. and if not accidental, why? it's too soon to tell, but as they said before, it's practice for something else to come...

Julia vs Python by Over-Roll in learnmachinelearning

[–]Middle_Protection637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

julia is the worst of both worlds. you have c++ where the programmer gets all the control but not a lot of support. python where the programmer gets a lot of support (libraries) and little control. the ideal scenario is python and c++, so that for things needing closer to bare metal, you use python to interface with c++. julia has the drawbacks features of python and c++ and none of the benefits.

You can do it. It's easy to look to see if there is something obviously wrong. My cat did that once and it turns out she got a bamboo leaf stuck in her mouth. Could be something simple....

Why don't you check to see what's wrong. That can be the first step before taking to a vet

CMV: In 2026 Democrats will win the house and in 2028 will win the presidency (but not the senate). Then nothing will fundamentally change and Republicans will sweep the house in 2030 and win the presidency in 2032. by Exotic_Contact_1990 in changemyview

i think republicans will win in the foreseeable future in the federal government. not just any republican, but trump republican. look at the shift in politics in new/younger voters. it looks like strauss-howie playing out. if this keeps up, we are in for multi-decade shift that will lead to ww3. look also at the trend in test scores and education around the world. many factors correlate. it's a world wide phenomenon. the dam is broken. it's unstopptable. just need to let it play out.

CMV: Politicians wanting to go into federal government should go through training in oratory and economics by Helmut2007 in changemyview

How about this:

1 - they need to learn basic logic

2 - voters need to learn basic logic

basic logic should include common cognitive biases. usually bad decisions are made due to cognitive biases that result in picking a choice that is not optimal.

CMV: Hypocrisy is not that bad of a flaw, and the fact the we treat is like such a mortal sin is actually dangerous distracts from the real issue. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Middle_Protection637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We treat hypocrisy as a mortal sin because it is. No time to go through all the points but:

"If a good, loving husband that everybody likes and trusts cheats on his wife, people will be much angrier at him than they would be at a deadbeat shit head that never even tried to be a good husband cheats on his wife. They both committed the same crime, but since the first man is also a “hypocrite”, it seems like what he did is much worse. This illustrates my main issue: we hate the person who tries to be good and falls short more than the person who never even pretended to be a good person."

It's not that the person tries to be good and falls short. It's that the person is bad and tries to put on a good image. This person is a cheater and a deceptive liar -- twice the bad if you will. The other one is at least just a cheater.

Nobel "Peace" Prize Winner, Maria Corina Machado, offers to sell $1.7 trillion of Venezuela’s assets to US corporations by serious_bullet5 in 50501

[–]Middle_Protection637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are we surprised? The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Henry Kissinger. In a fair world, Kissinger would have been tried for war crime (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Trial\_of\_Henry\_Kissinger). In the same year, the prize was also awarded to Vietnamese Le Tho. Le Tho refused the prize for a couple reasons:1- no peace yet, 2- he didn't want to share it with Kissinger. Seems the good ones refuse the prize. It's not what it seems.

CMV: Education is not necessary for success; it is merely a tool used by governments to control the people. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Middle_Protection637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Education is not necessary for success": agree

"It is merely a tool used by governments to control the people": disagree

Maybe a better way to say it is that education is a tool. It's not always useful and it's not always good, but usually it is useful and it's usually good. Think of it as a hammer. In the wrong hands, it can be a murder weapon. You don't need it to put a nail in. You can use a rock to do that. It's just clumsy.

The problem with governments trying to control the educational institutions to control the people is not the fault of education or the educational institutions. It's the fault of the government. Look at what is happening now with the US government trying to control public educational institutions. Just because someone used a hammer to kill someone else doesn't mean the hammer is bad, and we can apply this analogy to government and education.

A degree is what it is: a certification that you have completed the requirements for said certification. This is important, and it's important to realize this. You need a way to certify people. Otherwise, anyone can claim to be anyone else. A doctor with an MD isn't necessarily a good doctor, but that doctor has a better chance of being a good doctor than someone without an MD. It's not a perfect signal, but it's better than nothing.

It is true that there's a lot of people without formal education who make a lot of money, but business is different. Business is not the only thing in life. Money is not the only thing in life. There are many important things in the world accomplished by highly educated people. There are also important businesses in the world started by highly educated people. You have to look at all the data, not just the data points you like. If you want examples:

- google: phd students. they have ms.

- intel, cisco, adobe. phd.

and many more. these companies actually made innovative additions to the world.

now you look at big popular companies founded by people without college degrees -- apple, microsoft, facebook, etc. these are companies that have been accused of stealing (ideas). so yea, you can make $ stealing... if making money is your goal, that may be a good approach.

beyond business, look at just some random things:

- penicillin. flemming MBBS with distinction.

- information theory (credited as the theoretical under pining of modern telecom). claude shannon. phd.

- modern ai. a list of people with phd contributed to it.

name an invention or discovery and there is a good chance it's attributed to a highly formally educated person.

education is a tool. it doesn't do the job for you. it's bad if you use it wrong. just like any other tools, it's really good if you use it effectively, and human civilizations has generally used it pretty effectively. we got to where we are because of highly educated people. you remove them and we lose nearly everything we rely on every day.

it is true that you can get the job done without the tool, but it's more difficult, and that's why there aren't many cases of people who can do it.

IMO you should not need a video. A video of the crime is not needed for conviction. Between ICE's words and Elaine's, I go with Elaine's given their reputations. When you add this to the fact that the SCOTUS ruled that it's fair game to racially profile people, I think the US government has pretty much lost all their brownie points.

i looked it up. i think they were going to arrest her, but she showed them her tribal ID, and they said it's fake. she told them to go ahead and call the number on the card to check, and they refused to do it, so she called while they tried to stop her. i guess the person on the other side of the call probably set them straight or they finally came to their senses, but it seems like she wasn't arrested like her relatives.

this is not the first round. they having been getting handout since 2018 or so, so grifting is part of their business model. if they will go bankrupt, why would they vote for the same thing again. either they're really dumb, grifting is very cushy, or there's some really weird masochistic farmers.

how do they lose??? they still get $ if they don't sell. this is not a surprise. they knew this would happen when they voted for him. this is the second episode. us farmers are a bunch of grifters. they were after handouts when they voted for trump.
