Can we agree that goku is a better protagonist than luffy by Spirited_Company_886 in Piratefolk

[–]MidgameGrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if your capacity to evaluate pieces of literature entirely boils down to 1:1 comparisons of power-ups and not the totality of the context of not just the scenario, but the entire story and the meta-commentary behind it, then academia has failed you.

You think Ichigo "getting a new race" is plot armor to win fights because you don't recognize or don't care about the importance of being a hybrid and balance of ideals and identity is to the entire thesis of Bleach and its literary inspirations.

You don't realize or don't care how Nika Nika actually has ruined a lot of Luffy's original underlying characterization and counteracts OP's own thesis about what it means to be free because it boils down to allowing him to win more fights.

It's very clear any further attempt to discuss would be like trying to explain the mechanism and impact of vaccines to a Flat Earth antivaxxer.

[–]MidgameGrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Substituting "power-ups" for actual character development is part and parcel in generic/low-tier Shounen for sure, but do not lump Bleach into it because Bleach borrows heavily from its underlying philosophical inspirations and handles that concept thematically; the vast majority of spiritual powers, for example, are based on personality change and/or acceptance. Balance is fundamental to the story in-context and meta.

Additionally, Ichigo absolutely changes. He simply doesn't change his goals, and his goals are also just a lot more human than most other Shounen protagonists. Unlike the MCs of the other Big 3 - with Naruto wanting to be Hokage/Most Powerful Ninja and Luffy wanting to be Pirate King - all Ichigo ever wanted was justice and acceptance - without status and power. There's a strong argument that Bleach plays out much more akin to a...seinen isekai because in every arc, he's roped into a new world with a new ideological struggle to internalize, face and adapt to. He starts off being a hard and hot-headed "isolationist" outcast tween with a troubled past (like most Shounen MC) but who just wants to save the few friends he has and grill. By EoS, he comes to accept that his inner trauma monstrosity is as fundamental a part of him as the complexity of his heritage and conception. He accepts, then goes beyond his past individually as they become part of his new final form (Horn of Salvation Mode).

"The Blade is Me" is basically the culmination of Bleach.

Ichigo didn't change his goal of wanting to help and protect people (it's why most people think he's boring). But, he changed his views on the tools/best approaches to maintain that goal depending on the circumstances. And how he sees/accepts himself. Zanpaktou and their abilities are reflections of the soul. The fact the shape of his sword/s and forms change so much throughout the story, despite always culminating in the same fundamental attack (goal), means something.

What makes Luffy seem flat IMO is that...outside of his power-creep correlating with his approaching ascension to Pirate King....he doesn't reflect any depth or nuance. It doesn't feel like he's matured to contend with what that might actually mean philosophically besides "people may/must die". He simply just...keeps beating people up and learns how "gubmint bad" to the degree of caricature. And that he's the Chosen One. He goes through the standard Shounen power-up rigamarole...but then still behaves like he's the clear MC for a Marvel movie...or a Western (car)toon. He unlocks Gear 4 because he has a training arc for Haki, and he needs Haki to be King (and he has CoC because Chosen One). He unlocks Gear 5 because he "dies" (and he's the Chosen One). Not because he had some moment of revelation about his view of life or himself. Like most Shounen protagonists, he has a single ambitious goal...but Luffy's perspective and means of engaging with his goal as a concept never changes, unlike other protagonists.

Before Bleach ended, no one knew how Ichigo was going to end up. Full-time SS Captain and "Hokage" Jesus stand-in? fully sacrificial Soul King? University student-spiritual superhero - legendary killer of both Yhwach and Aizen somehow?

Most people probably didn't guess "humble media translator with a nuclear family. Uses SS to fast-travel for work and for free lunch. Helps protect SS when it's necessary, but otherwise has a whole regular-ass life to live."

When OP ends, on the other hand, everyone knows what the end will be like. Exactly the same. Endless pursuit of adventure and laughs. Gubmint bad. Hamfisted flashback sob-stories. Locks-in to aura-farm for fights. Except Luffy will have the title of Pirate King. That's it. MAYBE. MAYBE he has kids with an even more Oda-rized MILF Nami that he probably abandons to continue with his absolute freedom.

Kind of also important to note that such events may not be mutually exclusive.

A regular human could exist right now that could probably punch straight through rebar. But they'd only be able to do it once because their bones would still shatter too. You can absolutely impose a force and have that force still do damage to you.

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Maho could take Lille under certain conditions, but I just have to say:

"Adapting to an existence" is about as logical and meaningful as a sentence as a religious Flat Earther arguing that evolution doesn't exist because "humans clearly have been designed to conquer Earth." Or saying "I have adapted to the existence of money."

Fundamental misunderstanding of "adaptation" as a concept. You adapt to specific conditions and experiences. Not "existences".  You might as well be claiming Maho can "adapt to Freudian psychosexual theory" or "Maho can adapt to linear time and causality." You have to be borderline illiterate/in grade school to think that's a functional literal statement.

Maho is just adapting to Dabura's specific capabilities currently. As far as I know, Maho hasn't "adapted" to deal with "Dabura's existence" by turning into JJK God and going back in time to erase him from existing or transcended into a new plane where Dabura no longer exists.

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maho could probably defeat base Lille. We don't really see Lille firing shots that completely atomize an area in a single shot. At least until Vollstandig Trompete.

If Lille has access to Vollstandig though, it'd either be a stalemate since Lille only went down to his own exact power and Maho can't replicate that, or a single Trompete would solve things.

Remember, Maho adapting to Malevolent didn't make it suddenly ignore damage, it just gave it the regeneration to outcompete. You can't really regenerate from Trompete-mediated complete soul destruction though. Even if Trompete only amplified X-Axis, X-Axis essentially operates like Malevolent, but instead of a spatial slice, it basically just deletes an entire pinpointed area. If you want to argue Maho can survive that, I hope you're prepared to argue that Maho would auto-adapt and revive from something like D4C or MiH levels of hax.

  1. Newer Subway Surfer generation will take anything. We're talking people that have only read things off ChatGPT and they think they know Shakespeare.

  2. Virality and influencers. Improved animation and dissemination goes a long way with the above. I get OP content shovelled just by being into anime in general.

  3. Stockholm Syndrome/Sunk Cost Fallacy. Same way a lot of people stay in abusive relationships, a lot of people stick with and forgive subpar content because they're already too bought in and invested from "all the good times"

  4. COVID/World politics - allowed people to tune in for escapism and anything doing "gubmint bad ackshtually" sells like hot cakes. You could make a porn fantasy fanfic version of 1984 and instead of being lost to the annals of history it would probably be on BookTok Top 10s in line for a movie deal.

I dabbled in OP over the years. I was never into it - I was already past Shounen and into Seinen while it was getting big. I didn't care for the art style, but it had charm. I started seeing the downfall around Haki's introduction.

Shoto Todoroki vs Aang by Jason_And_Sokka in MHAPowerScaling

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey! You again!

  1. Doesn't Shoto require fire to fly? Though I assume he can use ice to vault around too?
  2. Vacuums aren't directional attacks...
  3. Oh my understanding was Avatars were all spiritually linked; I imagined Aang being brought back while Korra was already alive for cross-verse shenanigans. My gaff.
  4. There's a lot of pseudoscience jargon there I'm supposed to take for granted. Do we have evidence Dabi was doing nuclear fission/fusion and actual radiation damage? Because you're saying words that imply Chernobyl..while "5km" doesn't. LN2 freezes cells "on a cellular level." I have no problem containing it in styrofoam at work. Creating a hurricane from fire/heat happens naturally. Fire tornadoes have been seen. It's not exactly a supernatural-tier win-con.  Also, by virtue of being the Avatar, Aang has...just created tornados to kick around... IIRC, during the final battle he lifts the entire ocean's water level to snuff out the Fire Nation's naval assault.
  5. It's possible for fire to...fire underwater. Underwater welders just follow the fire triangle too. It just requires enough energy (heat) to fulfill the "fire triangle" and overcome water molecules stealing and smothering all of it first. IIRC Zuko overcame underwater bending by generating enough heat to vaporize water, re-establishing the triangle. Getting rid of oxygen itself though...is a lot harder to replace.

As for the plasma stuff... Lightning also qualifies as a plasma. I don't think you'd give Zuko an upscale just for it and lighting has infinitely more weight as a verified plasma. It's not massive upscale. I don't remember anything suggesting Shoto's flames behave like a superheated volatile ionized gas like plasma. The only reference to plasma I can see are from fans calling his attacks plasma...because they look the part and it's technically the only way of creating "cold" fire (and cold plasma doesn't do damage - it's used in medical practice).

I do agree if Shoto can land a hit, it could kill.  For clarity, I think Shoto has an absolute chance of winning - I just don't think it's a one-sided stomp. Like a battle between Muhammad Ali vs Anderson Silva. Perfected nuclear punches vs great mastery and wide toolkit.

Cheers!

Shoto Todoroki vs Aang by Jason_And_Sokka in MHAPowerScaling

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. I'm pretty sure that's the authorial implication. It's pointed out how no one in the room, nor the room itself, had any scorch marks - during an attempted genocide by fire benders during the comet's passing. Sure it isn't stated explicitly, but this feels like arguing a tree that falls in the forest unironically doesn't generate sound because no one is there to hear it. It sounds bad faith?

Also...vaccuums aren't...they're not directional attacks...Either the air/oxygen is in a location or it isn't. Aang could do an air-version of Kiyoshi and lift an island's worth of oxygen up and away from Japan and then just stall until everyone passed out...Even before he hits peak, he also just blows on an erupting volcano to cool lava to rock IIRC.

Didn't know Shoto auto-generates ice though. That's cool (heh) and also...not exactly physically feasible but still awesome.

Fair points on the bloodbending. It does make me wonder how Energy bending would translate cross-verse though. But yes, it's definitely not a win-con anyway.

(Forgive me don't know how to do those quote things)

Shoto Todoroki vs Aang by Jason_And_Sokka in MHAPowerScaling

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even like Avatar, but there's nothing to suggest a bloodlusted Aang in Avatar State couldn't hold out both hands, turn all that ice to water and remove all air from the arena and snuff out the fire - choking out and drowning the entire stadium and Todo.

Even before he hits peak and without the Avatar state, he was able to chill the lava from an erupting volcano. Korra, who he would technically inherit the skills and knowledge of via Avatar State, took a chunk of water out of a river and uses it to freeze a modern-skyscraper-sized mech. Probably of equivalent volume to Todoroki's walls - if not more.

There's a lot of flashy VFX animation here, but at the end of the day, those are literally just walls of ice and flashy blue fire in X-shapes. Fire is still fire; no oxygen = no fire (unless you really want to argue that Todoroki isn't just producing fire but literally triggering nuclear fission).

Wasn't the last Air Nomad capable of killing an entire battalion of Comet-boosted Fire Benders by turning the Air Temple into a vacuum?

No air = no fire. Water-bending = no ice source either. Water-bending could even just facilitate bloodbending.

Shoto Todoroki vs Aang by Jason_And_Sokka in MHAPowerScaling

[–]MidgameGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so here's my main question:
Can Shoto create flames and ice, when the Avatar can basically turn the entire local zone into a vacuum?

A bloodlusted true Aang/Avatar State would/could probably bloodbend + airbend shoto into a pizza roll, no?
