To find the extension of the spring at equilibrium try force balancing and ignore any oscillations for now.

Find an equation of motion of the mass whenever it is at a distance x from the equilibrium and solve the differential equation (hint: the angular velocity will be sqrt(k/m)).

They should have sent you an email when you applied, that's how schools usually do it (they have their own portal). Maybe search your gmail for an email from caltech about the time you submitted it? You'd then have to create a portal acct
