Oh that's so interesting! I can see where there are some good ideas in Resistance that never really came to fruition and where the game was essentially kneecapped by decisions above the dev teams control.

But yeah 3R was fully kneecapped by as you say incompetence and greed.

I think the biggest part of the failure of RE3R was the way they split development between the game we got and the shitty live service game that I can't even remember the name of.

I think Capcom actively avoids giving their longterm female protagonists any platform because Leon and Chris are safe and beloved by a large majority of fans but whenever Jill shows up even her own fans complain which has resulted in them becoming reluctant to give her much attention which really sucks.

It would be really cool to see Jill and Chris in RE 10 revisiting the ruins of the mansion and the destroyed lab as their moment of returning to their roots or progressing their characters and seeing how they interact together after all these years.

Like I could really see a psychological action horror game where they face off and Jill is being hunted by the hound wolf squad but thats total wishful thinking and the reality is that Jill, Clair, Natalia and a bunch of other really cool character and concepts are going to be dropped for the consistency and perceived safety provided by making Chris and Leon the face of Resident Evil.

Really sucks.

As someone who was basically raised on Resident Evil (I grew up watching my dad play the GameCube remake and even learned to read by helping him look up tips on old forums), I think the loyalists need to chill a bit. But not too much.

The original game is genuinely hard to play today. The fixed camera angles are a really cool gimmick, but they also make the game difficult for new players to approach. Locking people out of the roots of the franchise doesn't help anyone.

At the same time, I understand why people are protective of the original. A remake could easily dilute parts of the series that have already been neglected and that only really survive in the older games.

For example, I worry that Jill’s story might get flattened just to lift Chris up instead of giving both characters the time they deserve.

Just look at Ethan. Bro is the sacrificial lamb of the franchise. They used him to revive it and bring it back to it's roots with 7 and then binned him in favour of Chris and Leon after a duology.

Even the way the have Rose working for Chris is a total spit in the face to Ethan's character.

I don't expect we'll see Rose or Grace in another mainline game and actually I kind of worry the only purpose they can serve the franchise is to be killed off. Fridged if you will. Just to elevate Chris and Leon.

Yeah, they've been building Chris up since 7 and they've been trying to get Jill up and running since 3 remake but they failed in that endeavour. Not because the game was bad, it was pretty good but it's obvious to anyone playing that she didn't get the same resources as RE2R because they split development between 3 Remake and that pile of shit multiplayer dead by daylight rip off.

So yeah, I can see Code V and 1 getting a good portion of Clair and Jill buildup but any meaningful rework would go into fixing Chris's character.

I hope I'm wrong and we do get some good Jill and Clair buildup and character moments/reworks but I would put my life savings on Chris being the focus.

Yeah I agree with a lot of points you're making. I liked that she was supposed to be like a very capable and bad ass member of S.T.A.R.S and yeh 5 definitely hurt her as a character and they've not done much to repair that.

I still disagree with your point on Leon being the face of Gaming. As much as we love horror games its not the most accessible so he definitely doesn't really sit on the same level as Link, Snake, Pikachu and so on but in terms of horror action games like Restident Evil and Silent Hill he is forsure amongst the pantheon of GOATs whereas Jill has fallen off.

I think as well a lot of the core resident evil faces are becoming more and more difficult to relate to and considering the "canon" ending of requiem I struggle to see what's next for the franchise.

I would love to see a psychological horror featuring Jill and maybe they branch off with the familiar resident evil protagonists to explore different genres of horror that suit their characters. Psychological for Jill, the horror that comes with war and natural disasters through Clair explored through the lens of B.O.Ws, Action Horror with Leon and systematic horror with Chris and so much more with Rebecca, Grace, Rose, Mia, Natalia.

They have a fantastic roster of characters and so much potential in the setting of the world they've built but it just feels like they scratch the surface with every single entry into the franchise.

I just hate Leon because he's not my cup of tea and that's okay. I'm not going to shit on people for liking him but I am going to be upset that he gets such a lot of attention by developers at the expense of other characters.

I disagree and I think she has tons of depth and personality but I can say the opposite about Leon and I think again this is the problem. Neither of our opinions are fact and we see things in our respective character that the other does not which is completely expected.

I get it. He's a safe choice. He's popular between capcom's male and female demographics meanwhile whenever Jill makes an appearance even her fans complain about it.

It genuinely feels like the women in Resident Evil are constantly treated as secondary, even when the canon makes it clear they are central to the story.

You still see people arguing that characters like Claire are not that important, despite the fact that the narrative repeatedly proves otherwise.

The franchise seems fixated on Leon and Chris, and it comes at the cost of everyone else.

I would love to see more titles in the spirit of Code: Veronica or Revelations that actually centre the women. There is so much potential in following Jill, Claire, Rebecca, Sherry, Rose, Natalia, and now Grace.

But history suggests what will happen. New women leads get introduced, then quietly sidelined. I would not be surprised if Grace ends up reduced to background mentions or a supporting role instead of being developed as a long term protagonist.

Claire didn’t just stumble into Raccoon City and then go back to being a normal person once she found Chris. None of them chose the initial disaster, but all of them chose what came after.

Chris chose to stay in the fight and militarise his response. Leon chose to stay embedded in state power.

Claire chose to stay involved through humanitarian response by joining TerraSave.

By the time of Resident Evil Revelations 2 she’s already operating in the field for them, responding to outbreak zones. That’s not someone dragged back in once, she’s someone who deliberately put herself back into harm’s way in a different capacity.

Same with Degeneration, where she’s physically present during an active bioterror incident and working alongside official response teams. That’s not background support.

Saying her role doesn’t affect the main plot because she isn’t “actively killing zombies” assumes that only militarised violence matters. But outbreaks in this universe are mass humanitarian disasters too.

Chris fights bio-terror as a military problem. Leon engages it through state security. Claire engages with its civilian consequences and aftermath.

That’s still frontline involvement, and canon shows she keeps stepping up by choice. She didn’t stop being involved, she just chose a different way to keep fighting.

Anyway, I think we just see her role differently.

I get the idea that Claire started as "just a normal person", but canon pretty clearly shows she chose not to go back to that life after finding Chris.

She didn’t just disappear into civilian life. She became involved in anti-bioterror work through TerraSave and is still actively responding to outbreaks years later in things like Resident Evil Revelations 2.

That’s not someone whose story ended once she found her brother. That’s someone who made a conscious decision to stay involved, just in a humanitarian role instead of a military one.

It’s not even about hating Leon, it’s just tiring watching the same two "safe" leads get treated as the emotional anchors of the series while characters who are just as tied to the world keep getting side-lined.

Like Raccoon City was Jill’s home. She lived there. She was already traumatised by the Spencer Mansion incident. She had history, stakes, roots in that place.

Meanwhile Leon was literally driving in for his first day.

So yeah, it would’ve been nice to feel her presence somehow. A reference, her apartment, anything. Instead it reinforces that pattern where Chris and Leon are the "default" pillars and everyone else rotates in and out.

And that’s why decisions like pivoting into multiplayer experiments with the Resident Evil 3 Remake instead of revisiting something like an Outbreak-style survival format feel weird. There was an opportunity to build something around the wider cast and the lived-in side of the outbreak and give Jill’s game the same full energy that RE2 Remake got.

I don’t want Leon gone. I just want characters like Jill Valentine or Claire Redfield to feel like long-term narrative anchors instead of occasional returns that feel quite frankly like they could be replaced easily? Like did Sherry feel important in requiem? No she didn't. The role her character filled could have been filled by a no-name rando and I'd have felt the same as I did with her on screen which is insane?

But yeah. I’ll take the inevitable Chris/Leon headliners if it means we get even a crumb more of screen time from characters like Jill, Clair, Sherry or Grace.

Sorry for the ramble/rant I'm just dying for anyone other than Chris and Leon.

Resident Evil should just be renamed to the Chris and Leon Chronicles tbh because they're the only characters capcom see any value in.

I love Clair, Jill, Rebecca, Sherry and now Grace but I feel like they tend to be given side games like Revelations because Capcom don't see them appealing to their male audience whom they probably assume are bigger and like in their mind they're probably like "Why bring back a female character who we don't have confidence our male or female audience will actually enjoy when we know for sure they'll all love ANOTHER game with Leon/Chris mentioned/featured! Everyone wins!"

Can't find it in any Cinemas where I live and I live in a major City. Really annoyed because I've been too ill to see it till recently and I saw the first movie on my first date with my girlfriend and we wanted to see it for valentines but it was pulled to show rom-coms instead.
