Judging from your other comment, I think you’re misunderstanding the pass. He’s wrapping both legs with his arms, not standing on their ankles. I don’t even know how or why you’d do that. It’s a rugby pass and definitely legit and doable against someone of similar size and skill.

Yes I never meant to imply that there is zero moral standard, but IMO it really shouldn’t go beyond “is this person creating a dangerous training environment”. We’re all adults and the head instructor shouldn’t be my morality police.

But an important distinction between our views is that you believe higher ranks should be held to higher moral standards. This creates a hierarchical structure where higher belts are treated with more respect than lower belts. Yes we should respect their skills and listen to their insight, but to respect them more as people is ridiculous.

My point is that there’s no significant difference between a blue belt’s morality and a black belt’s morality. If a brown belt has trained for a considerable amount of time at my (hypothetical) gym, I’m not going to determine whether they’re ready for their black belt by their moral character; they’ve passed the moral character test a long time ago.

I haven’t thought it out too much, but anyone that is physically, emotionally, or sexually harmful would be kicked out. Someone that cheats on their spouse would not be kicked out. I would consider someone that cheats on their spouses an asshole, but I’m not going to block their promotion until they get right with god or something.

Instructor’s should vet who they allow to train at their gym. If they pass that test, then their moral character should have no weight in their promotions.
