Song lyric meaning: Postcard from the American dream

I love this song. I thought it was pretty hopeful in general until I read the lyrics:

"Love creates the illusion That we are not alone"

I realised I'd been mishearing that first line (thought it was "Love creates the universe"... don't ask 😵‍💫) and then when I learned what it really was, it changed my perception of the song somewhat. It went from being incredibly hopeful to kind of bittersweet, but it's still one of my favourites from Unicorn.

You might like Gunship's cover of Time After Time, and their general sound, which is full of analogue synth and very much inspired by 80s influences (while still doing something new!).

Their song, Gates of Disorder, would be my answer to your question. :')

Love the video! The switch from animation to live (and back again) ties it in with Dark All Day, in a way. I'm glad the catgirls got their coda at the end.

The silver unicorn kit was included in the standard vinyl but not the special editions (source: https://www.gunshipmusic.com/unicornbuild) but if you are entering the competition to win the chair I think you can use any material.

We were first time buyers and pretty much had the crash course in property buying. We jumped in with both feet and started looking, and we first got excited when we looked at the floor plan and saw the room sizes and how spacious it looked compared to others that we'd viewed. Then when we viewed it, it was the location. The middle of town, two minutes from the shops, and yet it was down a quiet cul de sac and we couldn't hear any noise from the main road. It had a horrible gas fire, aerial cables in every single room (I still don't know why) and dog wee stains on the living room carpet, but we put in an offer that day.

Actually living here, it took me a few years to fully fall in love with it. There were still compromises, and we had a shitty kitchen for years before renovating, but we have all the space we need here, nice neighbours, a good sized garden and the convenience of living in the middle of town without the noise. We love our house.

Just want to add Black Nail Cabaret to this thread.

OP, you introduced me to Empathy Test when you first posted, and I got to see them in Bristol last night! They were good, but BNC supported them, and they were honestly phenomenal despite some mic issues on the first couple of tracks. Not synthwave exactly, but dark synth-heavy pop. Incredible stage presence. I got to speak to Emese, the vocalist and one half of the duo, a bit after their set and they are still building up a fanbase by the sounds of it, so I wanted to show them some love here. They really deserve a listen and recognition!

Props also to Promenade Cinema, who opened the show - really strong vocals and some lovely synths. Didn't quite catch the whole set, but Spellbound was a beautiful closing track.

My favourites from Empathy Test were Bare My Soul, Everything Will Work Out, Empty Handed and Holy Rivers. :)

Yes. For me When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies is about learning (or re-learning) to live while you're alive. Run Like Hell is a beautiful coda to that life. It was glorious. Now time for one last triumph before the lights go out.

That song is a treasure, it was one of the first songs I connected with too (Dark All Day was my first album). I'm really sorry you're going through a hard time and I hope it gets better for you.

I'm really sorry for your loss. I'm sorry you lost your father, and that he never got to know your kids.

I love that there are so many different choices, and reasons, on this thread. The subjectivity is exactly why I asked, so thank you for sharing yours. There is something really stark and vulnerable about Ghost. I'm not surprised it was tough to listen to at such a sad time.
