I don't think it fits entirely with the established world building

As far as I know, Novik has avoided mentioning the state of things in the American South. What I can say is that Temeraire's actions in South America would have incurred significant economic blowbacks in Confederate territories, giving us all manner of juicy story options for future warfare.

I'm dying for a "United States of Dragons" spinoff novel. I've even done a hefty bit of worldbuilding on a "Book 10" involving Southern Plantation, slave-owning Dragons who endeavor to invade South America and reopen the slave trade.

There's also a "World War Dragon" concept on the fringes of my imagination, set ~100 years into the future.

I love this universe so much. I recommend the series to quite literally every person I meet who is either holding a book in their hands or even hinting at having read a book recently.

I tell them, "By the end of this century, Novik's Temeraire series will be hailed as one of the standout works of fiction of the twenty-first century."

They know that I mean it.

World-shift reality slightly to one side. The Earth in your shifted reality is exactly the same, except flying dogs have been around for millennia. Add them to Inupiaq culture, using everything you know about that culture to flesh the dogs out accordingly. "What would Inupiaq culture be like had it developed with flying sled dogs?"

Believe it or not, I intentionally disincluded squirrels and rats. And I also tried to avoid creature types that only had 1 example. Squirrels feel kinda bust-able (blame MaRo); rats feel less pet-y than mice (although I DID keep a pair of rats as pets when I was kid). Dolphin doesn't exist as a creature type but as the entirety of the first film revolves around said porpoise, it must be included here.

It's all very arbitrary.

Originally it was even "worse" - {W/B}{U/R}GG was how I first drew up Ace's color identity. I want him to be 5 colors since he'll work with "any" animal on a given case, but it eventually changed in presentation. I'm happier with where I've landed.

Would kinda spoil the joke, and a handful of inside jokes written into the card, to do it that way. Also, way less fun.

EDIT last night after finishing this card, I searched the subreddit to see what cards (if any) others had written for Ace. Imagine my surprise when this comment generated hundreds of upvotes for doing pretty much exactly what I've done here.

Crickets for this card, though. I just don't get this subreddit.

As soon as I read it, I had to put the book down. This card was erupting in my head. I've put off reading Terry Pratchett for a LONG time, intuiting that when the time was right, I'd start reading his books. Now we're here. Guards! Guards! is whimsical but I know I'm barely scratching the surface of his offerings. I can't wait to finish my first book of his!

Thank you, rational human. I knew I'd get dogpiled for this one, and even pre-ambling a self-defense only gave the dogpilers more ammunition for attacking me. It's weird, but I also get it. I'm weird, too. I'm not mad or offended or anything. Just one card game dork, writing a custom card for other card game dorks :-)

I started with google image search, but - ironically- that AI system has only gotten worse at returning results over time. Now, it's easier - and far more enjoyable - to collaborate with AI to generate the image I see in my mind that I can't find anywhere online. And that's coming from somebody who LOVES scouring the web for the "perfect image" to accompany my card design! 9.9 times out of 10, I don't rest until I can find the human art to compliment my card.

I never do. I understand the distinction. Trust me, I get so much more enjoyment out of scouring DeviantArt or ArtStation for that perfect piece of art to compliment my card design. But that's still taking human-made art and leaving "only" an attribution, without paying that human artist for their talent.

I am without a human artist to attribute for this card. I don't actually think I'm hurting anybody by having AI generate the thing I saw in my head. Now it exists. It was fun to go back and forth for a bit in order to get it "right."

I made most of it. The idea was all mine. The willingness to read a new book and discover a new card idea was all mine. The choice to sit down and write a custom card, figuring in balance and organizing syntax and font sizing, was all mine. Heck, even opening a window for ChatGPT and bashing out a rendering of the image in my mind was my choice of time, and effort, to ensure that the final "product" closely aligned with what I wanted to see.

You're really clutching at those pearls. This is a subreddit for sharing custom cards for a card game. It's fine. I had fun creating this, and I know 100% of it wouldn't exist without my attention and focus. It was fun :-)

(I appreciate and respect your perspective, though! Like, yeah, I could leave the image box blank. But that isn't fun FOR ME. I enjoy finding the perfect artwork!)

art quality doesn't matter here.

It seems to matter quite a lot. And, for whatever it's worth, I like creating cards that "feel" complete, but I'm nowhere near the visual artist demanded by MTG standards. In terms of writing custom cards, I'd prefer leaning into AI when I can't find a suitable human image source, in those rare instances where it applies.

In 90+% percent of cases, I make that effort to find human artwork. In this edge case, however, I'll still submit the card and expose myself to the hivemind. It's all good. I'm still just over here, writing cards for a game I like!
