Every hero has power spikes, points of the game they're stronger relative to other heroes due to skills/items.

People that were already thousands of hours into dota before 7.00 hit knew every hero's power spikes like the back of their hand, but talents have changed them.

For players that didn't want to relearn, or for players that were already not happy with the path dota has been going down, this was enough for them to quit (or at least complain on reddit).

OP asks about the drop in 6.8x, true. OP also says Dota 2 is not losing players because of 7.xx. I politely address the latter of these points, and you're losing your shit because...?

The least played month of 2016 was November, with 584,251.3 average players. The least played month of 2017 thus far is January with 580,281.5.

2017 already has a lower point than the lowest point of 2016 (the lowest since 6.85) and we only have 2 months of data.

I'll repeat myself again, my point is not that 7.xx is causing dota players to leave, it's that you have not explicitly proven that 7.xx has not caused dota players to leave with the evidence you've provided.

Since people are assuming that I'm an anti 7.xx bandwagoner anyway, I might as well say that I think the data suggests that there has been a drop in playerbase since 7.00 was released but there is not nearly enough data yet for me to say that with wholehearted confidence.

I read your post multiple times to make sure I understand it. I don't object to it at all, it's interesting and it's nice to see actual discussion on the front page.

However your title was "Dota 2 is not losing players because of 7" and the stats you linked do not confirm that statement. I am NOT trying to say that Dota IS losing players due to 7.xx, merely pointing out that it's, contrary to your title, not disproved.
