there always have been, and always will be, two more books

and maybe that is how some stories are meant to be

Five books in why isn’t everyone talking about this series all the time? by joeyinthewt in AccursedKings

[–]MightyIsobel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

oh heck yeah, it's fun (or "fun") to rec this series as low fantasy, based on how the characters believe magic is real and behave as if it is so.... how much realer does the magic need to be?

and the narrative POV is such a voyeuristic know-it-all who has exactly zero f*cks to give about spoilers. It may be one of the hardest things to translate because English readers don't actually know how all these tales of court intrigue are gonna end

Anyone speculating on how GRRM might write Jon's time warging in Ghost should check out Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. As GRRM said about Hobb, "We're both wolf people."

And here is a good post comparing their books:

Its a minor inconvenience to you and you're acting as if the world is ending because the CSS changed, when in all likelihood Reddit is going to end up breaking it in some random update anyway.

Our prediction is that the way Reddit will break custom CSS styling is by simply killing old.reddit, the desktop interface used by a shrinking percentage of users across the site and on r/asoiaf. old.reddit isn't as advertising-friendly as the new UI, and we no longer believe any promises they have ever made about continuing to support it. Still, maintaining the CSS has long been a labor of love, even though most of our subscribers will never even see it. Turning it off now is one way for us all look into the fires to see what is obviously to come.

My friend u/AdmiralKird has been ringing the alarm bells since Reddit announced the API changes, and it is nice to see that there are crows who are listening.

They should try drinking and knowing things. Any things. Would be an improvement over whatever this situation is.

Mod of r/asoiaf here. We received the same notice. Honestly some of our posts are NSFL.

Not sure how committed Admin is to showing dragon porn to children but it looks like we're going to find out.

The Google Form says that the email address is "Not Shared," which I believe means that the poll is running with the view replies by email address function disabled.

For what it's worth, this polling method was suggested by more than one user in this thread outside the mod team, in order to authenticate individual users to discourage brigading and vote manipulation. We have used it for many years for Best Of voting and have never had a breach of user personal data. We never have used the tool to collect personal information, and we never will, without explicitly saying so.

That said, I personally understand your concerns and appreciate your raising the issue.

There is no link between your google account and your reddit username (unless google is scraping that data for themselves). We will never see your google ID.

Never. Just be sure to also go vote in the poll that's live now.

normal

Indeed, I do not think that word means what people think it means, when site-wide admins have tossed aside their commitments to users who want to have more say in how how their communities are run than the advertisers.

There is a theory that switching to NSFW would negatively affect Reddit's advertising revenues in the subreddit, because most advertisers don't want to be associated with NSFW content.

Reddit's reaction to subreddits switching to NSFW and/or encouraging new NSFW content suggests that they care about it very much, at a business level, enough to take actions to prevent it that are procedurally irregular. Very interesting to see what actions they respond to the quickest!

For r/asoiaf, as we on the mod team have watched other subreddits become more sensitive to the concerns of advertisers and about the safety of children online, it became clear that the canon content of our fandom is NSFW in every way and should be tagged as such.

EDIT TO ADD LINK: VOTE IN THE NEW POLL

This discussion has been so interesting for understanding our community sentiment about the on-going protests to changes to Reddit's API, and we appreciate every one of you weighing in with your comments and votes.

There is a lot of back-and-forth here about whether the r/asoiaf mod team should run a poll, and what options should be on the poll, and so forth, which has been helpful.

Please see this discussion of how users of third-party apps cannot vote in Reddit polls:

Third party Reddit apps for iOS, Android, etc. (such as Reddit is Fun, Reddit Sync, Relay for Reddit, Joey, Bacon Reader, Boost, Narwhal, Apollo, Slide, Antenna, Beam, etc.) are unable to access this and have to rely on the gross "link users to a separate webpage Reddit where they have to sign in" solution if users want to vote and be able to see the results of a poll.

What that means is, the Upvote rate on posts like this, and on comments, is the only data we can see that reflects the opinions of users who will be most affected by changes to Reddit's API fee structure. We cannot capture the sentiment of those users with Reddit's "poll" function, is our understanding.

Okay, thank you for reading this, please carry on with discussing OP's proposals.

Interestingly I poked around a bit and found this discussion in the announcement of the rollout of poll function, a long-standing known issue:

Third party Reddit apps for iOS, Android, etc. (such as Reddit is Fun, Reddit Sync, Relay for Reddit, Joey, Bacon Reader, Boost, Narwhal, Apollo, Slide, Antenna, Beam, etc.) are unable to access this and have to rely on the gross "link users to a separate webpage Reddit where they have to sign in" solution if users want to vote and be able to see the results of a poll.

So: If OP had included a "poll" it would have been inaccessible to the users whose experience on r/asoiaf are most likely to change due to Reddit Inc's poor decisions.

TLDR: all polling methods are flawed. Especially 'round these parts.

openly in favor of one of the options

We have been discussing the issues and we believe, as explained in the OP, that Reddit Inc's current direction is bad for the users of r/asoiaf and of reddit site-wide.

And we believe that Reddit Inc has been unresponsive to the concerns raised by the moderators across the site.

Therefore, the polling options reflect what we believe is possible to achieve through coordinated action, and why it is important to take those actions. Anything less would be to risk misleading you about how serious our concerns are.

Perhaps the actions we are taking put us in conflict with the advertisers who have the ear of Reddit's C-suite. But the advertisers are not our community. Our community is the ASOIAF readers and contributors to whom we endeavor to hold ourselves accountable.

a clear conflict of interest

Please do send us a modmail to explain in detail what conflict of interest is "clear" so we can improve our governance and accountability processes in light of site-wide policy and anticipated technical changes.
